Lions Trading Matthew Stafford to Rams for Goff, Draft Picks: The Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Rams have a deal to trade Matthew Stafford to the Rams for Jared Goff, a third round pick in 2021 and first round picks in 2022 and 2023. New Lions GM Brad Holmes was the director of college scouting for the Rams. Both quarterbacks were first overall draft picks seven years apart.

Chiefs Reach Super Bowl 0x37 for Chance to Repeat: The Kansas City Chiefs beat the scrappy Buffalo Bills 38-24 to advance to Super Bowl 0x37 as AFC champions. They'll attempt to become the first team to win back-to-back Super Bowls since the New England Patriots in 2004 and 2005. The Bills took a 9-0 lead but fell behind 31-15 by the start of the fourth quarter.

Tom Brady Leads Buccaneers to Super Bowl 0x37: After the Green Bay Packers kicked a field goal on fourth-and-goal to go down by 5 with 2:05 remaining, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers never gave the ball back in a 31-26 upset victory to advance to Super Bowl 0x37. Tom Brady had the Bucs up 28-10 in the third but threw three interceptions to give Aaron Rodgers a chance for a comeback. The Bucs will be playing the game at their home stadium in Tampa.

Columbus Blue Jackets ship Dubois & 3rd round pick to Winnipeg Jets for Laine, Roslovic: Blue Jackets trade the disgruntled center to the Winnipeg Jets and a 3rd round pick for 2 skilled forwards – Patrik Laine and Jack Roslovic, an unsigned restricted free agent from Columbus who is currently training with the Ohio AAA Blue Jackets while unsigned. Dubois, 22, requested a trade upon signing a two-year contract extension the week prior to the start of training camp Jan. 4 at Nationwide Arena. The team’s former No. 1 center didn’t publicly offer a reason, but it’s believed to be multi-faceted – tied to both prolonged contract negotiations and a feuding relationship with coach John Tortorella.

NBCSN is Shutting Down by End of 2021: NBCUniversal is winding down the NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) by the end of the year, moving its sports such as the Premier League and NASCAR to USA Network and Peacock. The network also has NHL but that deal expires in 2021. For seven years NBCSN has been the home of the Premier League, offering incredible coverage never before seen in the U.S., but in recent years it seemed to be on the decline.

Baseball icon Hank Aaron dead at age 86: Hank Aaron came into life on Feb. 5, 1934, in Mobile on the wrong side of segregation. He left it on Friday as a national icon.

Philip Rivers Retires After 17 Seasons: Philip Rivers announced his retirement from the NFL after 16 seasons on the Chargers and one on the Colts. His farewell message ended with the words "Nunc Coepi," a Latin phrase meaning "Now I begin" he's been saying for years. He chose the retirement date of Jan. 20 because it is feast day of Sebastian, patron saint of athletes. Instead of the broadcast booth, he's going to coach high school football.

New Mets GM Fired for Sending Dick Pic to Reporter: Jared Porter's tenure as the New York Mets general manager lasted 35 days. Porter has been fired after this ESPN report detailing the bombardment of texts he sent a female reporter in 2016 that included an explicit photo. In total he sent her 62 unanswered texts. The reporter has left journalism, saying, "I started to ask myself, 'Why do I have to put myself through these situations to earn a living?'"

Brees May Retire After Throwing Away NFL Divisional Round Game: The Bills, Packers, Chiefs and Buccaneers advanced to conference championship games. Patrick Mahomes left with a concussion but the Browns weren't able to catch Kansas City. Drew Brees is expected to retire after 20 seasons, disappointingly on a low note after throwing three interceptions in a 30-20 loss to a Bucs team lead by fellow quadragenarian Tom Brady.

In golf’s history, there were just four previous condors reported through 2018 — all of them holes-in-one on par 5s, starting in 1962 when a golfer in Hope, Ark. cut the corner on a dogleg for an ace on a 480-yard hole. Before Pon’s rare feat, the last condor was in 2007, when a 16-year-old aced a 511-yard hole in New South Wales, Australia.

Jaguars Hire Urban Meyer as Head Coach: Urban Meyer has become the sixth head coach of the storied Jacksonville Jaguars (horror story, mostly). Meyer won three National Championships in football, including two 70 miles down the road in Gainesville. College Football Championship Was a Ratings Flop: An audience of 18.7 million watched the College Football Playoff National Championship Game Monday, the lowest since 2004. It was even lower than either of the semifinals this year. NFL Wild Card Round Features Rams Upset of Seahawks: The Bills, Rams, Buccaneers, Ravens, Bears and Browns advanced in the first round of the NFL playoffs. Los Angeles beat Seattle despite losing quarterback John Wolford early and turning to Jared Goff and his broken right thumb, which was operated on only 12 days ago. Wolford was hospitalized during the game but able to return while teammates were celebrating the win in the locker room.
