I know someone who knew Justin Blackmon socially when he was still living in Jacksonville and had a chance to make it back to football. He said Blackmon was enjoying life perfectly fine without the NFL and thought he'd never make a comeback. This was proven correct.

It makes me wonder whether there are some high NFL draft picks who bomb out of the league because they want no part of it after seeing how physically arduous the pro game is. They lose the desire after getting a sustained three-hour beating for week after week and decide that leaving the game after pocketing the rookie deal is good enough. (This is exactly what I'd do. Being the backup quarterback who holds the clipboard and never plays is my NFL dream job.)

After being the fifth-overall pick, Blackmon didn't get his whole deal but he did collect over $7 million. That's a pretty good life if used wisely.
