Play NFL Survivor on RunYourPool: Last year I finally succumbed to the lure of a Survivor Pool, where you pick one winner each week, can't pick that team again for the season and stay in the running until you lose. Use the link to enter the pool I joined. It's $10 per entry and you can buy multiple entries. This pool begins in week 2.

92,000 Fans Attend Women's Volleyball Match: The Nebraska Cornhuskers women's volleyball team has set a new attendance record for a women's sporting event at 92,003, breaking the record of 91,648 set in 2022 by a Champion's League match and the U.S. record of 90,185 in 1999 at the Women's World Cup Final between the US and China. All the Nebraska attendance was paid. "It's incredible. I don't have enough words to describe it," said Nebraska middle blocker Andi Jackson.

Coach Prime Decimated the Roster in Colorado: Deion Sanders has 86 new players on his roster in Colorado including 53 incoming transfers, the most ever in college football. Only 10 scholarship athletes survived the purge. Former FSU defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews, a Sanders mentor who played under Alabama legend Paul "Bear" Bryant, said, "It reminded me so much of Coach Bryant. His deal was you get in or you get out. He wasn't going to have a meeting and try to encourage you to join his team."

RIP Terry Funk and Bray Wyatt: The wrestling world lost one of its most legendary performers when hardcore innovator Terry Funk passed away this week at the age of 79. This was followed by another blow when one of WWE's most creative and innovative performers, Bray Wyatt (real name Windham Rotunda) died of cardiac-related COVID complications at the age of 36.

Stephen Strasburg Retires from Baseball: Stephen Strasburg is calling it quits on a career that saw him debut as the most highly touted fireballer in years, become World Series MVP in 2019 and finally be undone by frequent arm injuries -- all while in the uniform of the Washington Nationals. His 10.5 strikeouts per nine innings is seventh all-time but his 113 wins are 31 lower than anyone in the Hall of Fame. "It's a miracle what he was able to accomplish despite the glitchy pitching mechanics that scouts warned would be his demise," writes D.J. Dunston of Deadspin.

CFL Pickem Week 12: Edmonton Triumphant Edition: The Montreal Alouettes face the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Thursday night's opener to week 12 of the CFL season, the only matchup between two teams with winning records. On Sunday the Ottawa Redblacks visit the Edmonton Elks, who are seeking their second win in a row. I have taken the lead in the pickem over Tommybiden after predicting that Elks victory.

Chicago White Sox Fire GM, Vice President: The Chicago White Sox have fired executive vice president Ken Williams and general manager Rick Hahn, parting with 31- and 21-year employees who were with the team for the 2005 World Series victory over the Houston Astros and a lot of bad baseball ever since. The Sox have only reached the postseason three times since that championship and are a dismal 49-77 this season.

Jon Rahm: Golf Fans Are Mouthy About Gambling: After reports that a gambling golf spectator yelled at a golfer hoping to cause him to miss a putt, Jon Rahm said gambling-related talk is heard during every round they play. "That happens way more often than you guys may hear," Rahm told reporters. "In golf, spectators are very close, and even if they're not directly talking to you, they're close enough to where if they say to their buddy, 'I bet you 10 bucks he's going to miss it,' you hear it."

Gambler: Phil Mickelson Wagered Over $300 Million Dollars: Sports gambler Billy Walters has a new memoir out that describes his five-year betting partnership with Phil Mickelson and the staggering extent of the golfer's wagering. Walters claims that Mickelson bet $110,000 to win $100,000 over 1,100 times, bet $220,000 to win $200,000 over 850 times and averaged nine bets a day in one year.

Worst Thing That Ever Happened is Good for Women's Soccer, Says Nancy Armour: "For much of the game’s infancy – and, make no mistake, with the first World Cup not played until 1991, infancy still applies – the USWNT has been soccer’s equivalent of an eclipse blocking out the sun," writes USA Today columnist Nancy Armour. "It's one thing to aspire to greatness, and invest accordingly, and quite another to know it's within your reach. Countries that might have been reluctant to increase their spending or devote resources to a domestic professional league, feeling the World Cup or Olympics was going to end the same way, anyway, might reconsider when they know the USWNT is no longer keeping the keys to the trophy case."

Atlanta Braves Looking Like Best Offense in MLB History: After 120 games the Atlanta Braves are on pace for 313 home runs, which would break the all-time record of the 2019 Minnesota Twins by 6. They also have a team OPS+ of 122, one shy of the record held by the 2017 Houston Asterisks. "Every night someone new is gonna get you," an American League hitter told Fox Sports. "Or all of them get you, and then you're fucked."

CFL Pickem Week 11: Nathan Rourke Edition: There are no cruelty laws in Canada that can stop Edmonton from playing football. The Elks travel to Hamilton for a Thursday night matchup to start the CFL weekend. In the pickem I win the week with 90 points but still trail first-place Tommybiden by 4. Make your picks and say your prayers and someday maybe Nathan Rourke will play for your hometown team.

Lawsuit: The Tuohy Family Robbed Michael Oher Blind: Everyone knows the heart-warming story of how the affluent southerners Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy adopted Michael Oher out of homelessness and poverty and he became a star offensive lineman at the University of Mississippi and Baltimore Ravens. Oher's newly filed lawsuit alleges that they didn't adopt him, but they did trick him into signing a conservatorship that has enabled the Tuohys and their two biological children to earn millions in royalties from The Blind Side movie and related projects while Oher didn't see a penny.

Dodgers Retire Fernando Valenzuela's Number: The Los Angeles Dodgers are retiring Fernando Valenzuela's number 34 and it only took 32 years after his last pitch for the club to make it happen. The team had a rule of not retiring a number unless a player made the Hall of Fame and Valenzuela never got close to induction. Longtime team broadcaster Jaime Jarrin said, "I think Fernando should be in the Hall of Fame because even though his numbers aren't extraordinary and he didn't pitch a lot of years, what he did for baseball no other player has done."

Things Looking Dire for Last 4 PAC-12 Schools: Washington State University president Kirk Schulz didn't paint a pretty picture of the school's athletic future after it, Oregon State, Cal and Stanford became the last four programs in the PAC-12 following the departure of Oregon and Washington to the Big Ten. WSU now faces a 40% drop in its athletic revenue and already had an $11 million deficit to cover, but he claims it will still spend like a Power 5 school. The call with the quitters was brief, he said. "It's like a breakup; it's awkward."

A Movie About Michael Jordan as NBA Owner Would Be Horror: Michael Jordan has sold his majority interest in the Charlotte Hornets, bringing to an end a disastrous 13-year reign as owner of the NBA franchise that included zero playoff series wins, no playoff trips the past seven seasons, selling second round picks for cash and being notoriously cheap. "He tried. He failed. The end," writes James Plowright of SI. "Overall, Jordan's tenure as an owner has been marked by poor decisions, failed coaching hires, underinvestment, disappointing draft picks, and unsuccessful free agency signings,"
