NHL Dumps Referee After Open-Mic Admission of Bias: The NHL has removed referee Tim Peel from all future games after he was caught on an open mic Tuesday night saying, "It wasn't much, but I wanted to get a fucking penalty against Nashville early." Veterans Stadium Was His Home Field: A former lot worker at Philly's infamous Veterans Stadium has written a memoir about the three years he lived there. Tom Garvey wasn't speaking figuratively. The struggling Vietnam War veteran literally lived in a secret apartment he assembled in one of the facility's many nooks and crannies. His pad was 60- by 30-feet and the ceiling was 300-level seats. It had Astroturf carpeting, a bed, chairs, toaster oven, coffeemaker, space heaters and a stereo. "Everything a guy would want," Garvey said.

NHL, ESPN reach seven-year U.S. broadcast deal: ESPN is believed to have reached a seven-year deal to become one of the league's media partners starting next season, according to multiple league and industry sources...an agreement that is expected to see ESPN get the rights to broadcast four Stanley Cup Finals between 2022 and 2028, plus streaming rights for Disney.

Blue Jays Will Use TV Audio on Radio Broadcasts: The Toronto Blue Jays will drop their radio broadcasts and use the TV feed's audio feed instead beginning with opening day April 1. No team in decades has gone without a dedicated radio team. Though it's described as being a safety move for the pandemic, Sportsnet isn't saying that radio will come back in the future.

Cowboys Reach 4-Year, $160 Million Deal with Dak Prescott: The Dallas Cowboys reportedly will fork over $160 million for four years to quarterback Dak Prescott and $126 million of it is guaranteed. His $66 million signing bonus is the most in league history, $1 million over what Russell Wilson got from the Seattle Seahawks. The deal heightens expectations for a 50-year-old franchise that hasn't reached the Super Bowl in 25 years.

New League Takes on NCAA, Offers $100K Salaries to Prep Stars: Overtime Elite, a new basketball league backed by a sports media company that films a lot of high school stars, plans to offer $100,000 salaries to around 30 of the top players, who will lose their high school and NCAA eligibility and play together. Players will also be given $100,000 scholarships if they decide later to attend college. This is just one challenge among several to the NCAA's grip on making big bucks on unpaid athletes.
