Last of the ironmen: : James DeAngelis, the last surviving member of Yale's 1934 "Ironman" football team, died Wednesday at age 97. The Yale team earned their nickname in an upset victory over Princeton on November 17, 1934 that ended a two-year, 15-game winning streak. The 11 Yale players (yes, that's 11) all played the game's full 60 minutes, the last time any college football team was to do so.

For all of you talking about coaching loyalty, an interesting development ...: West Virginia University has filed a lawsuit against former head coach Rich Rodriguez over a $4M buyout. Rodriguez, who left for the University of Michigan earlier this month, has two years to pay WVU back the money, but one-third is due by Jan. 19 and the Rodriguez camp has been making noise about the clause not being valid.

Journalist: The NFL's No Game for a Family: Dick Meyer in today's Washington Post: "My son and I braved frigid, remote FedEx Field to see our beloved Chicago Bears, the fallen Super Bowl champions, humiliated 24-16 by the struggling Washington Redskins. It wasn't the depth of our despair that will keep us away from football stadiums for good but the depravity of the fans. I suppose depravity is a strong word. But what better describes drunken adult men, egged on by other grown beer-swillers, belly-shouting the most spectacular obscenities imaginable as they stand next to a 13-year-old boy? Every play was a competition to produce a more vile insult or a different suggestion about which Bear body part might be stuffed up which orifice. ... Within 10 minutes of kickoff, I knew I had made a terrible mistake taking my son to the game."

Canadians among first women to join IIHF Hall of Fame: For the first time ever, women are being inducted into the International Ice Hockey Federation's Hall of Fame player's category. Canadians Geraldine Heaney and Angela James plus American Cammi Granato were among the six players selected for induction Thursday. NHL greats Mario Lemieux, Igor Larionov, French player Philippe Bozon and builder Art Berglund will also be inducted into the Hall of Fame during the men's world championships in Quebec City and Halifax in May.

Simon suspended 30 games: Chris Simon has received the longest suspension in NHL history--again. Late in the New York Islanders loss to the Penguins Saturday, with the Isles trailing 3-2, Simon drew a match penalty when he pulled out Jarkko Ruutu's leg, sending the forward to his knees between the team benches. Simon then stepped on the back of Ruutu's leg with his skate.

Derby to become Mickey Mouse club?: Roy (nephew of Walt) Disney's Shamrock Holdings investment group is reported to be heading a US consortium that is seeking to buy bottom-of-the-EPL Derby County. New Rams chairman Adam Pearson denies holding talks with them or with the Walt Disney Co., of which Roy Disney is "director emeritus". Pearson also thinks calling Derby a "Mickey Mouse club" is "cheap and potentially damaging."

NHL Faces Competition from Russian Tycoon's New European League: For years, the NHL has poached stars under contract with teams in Europe and Russia, scuttling existing agreements and angering owners. This may be coming back to haunt them, now that Russian energy tycoon Alex Medvedev is working with former NHL player Igor Larionov and former player's union chief Bob Goodenow to begin a league in Europe that will compete for players with the NHL. Here's a line from the Toronto Star that should chill NHL owners: "It's unclear whether the league -- which Medvedev said could formally be announced as soon as today -- would honour NHL contracts."

Mr. Clutch: There is a strain of journalism as hero worship, a strain that asks us to believe that sports are tests of character, that those who come through at key moments of the game have reached down deep inside themselves and found the strength and courage to succeed. I don't want to get into that. I am willing to look at the data and see what they have to tell us, but I want to keep at arms' length any judgments about the character of the athletes. Sports talk show hosts may be comfortable doing that, but that's their job, it's not mine.
