Two Lovers in Sports: Chris Evert and Greg Norman Engaged.: Former tennis champion Chris Evert and ex-golf number one Greg Norman announced their engagement on Friday, during the South African Open golf tournament in the South-Western Cape. I didn't know where to put this: Tennis? Golf? Culture? Extreme?

Wow, didn't see that one coming. The Shark and the Ice Princess. He had to give his ex $100m?? I guess it pays to be Mrs. Shark.

I don't know why I regarded Norman as a pitiable figure, given his famous collapses. The guy has enough money to afford a $100 million divorce settlement ! That's a lot of shark-logoed sweater vests and faux panama hats.

I just hope he never calls her Jim.

Wow, didn't see that one coming It's been a feature in the tabloids down here for quite a while, along with the divorce payout. Like WC2K2, I am unable to work out what category this belongs in. Australian-American relations?

Correct me if I am wrong owlhouse, but didn't both Greg and Chris start this when they were married to other people, thereby trashing two long time marriages? That is what gets me, we are a "throw away" society. Make an effort? Bah! That is too much like work.

Not only did they break some homes, Steelergirl, but Evert's husband was Norman's buddy and he introduced them to each other. Bet he'd like a mulligan.

My first thought was ... wha..? My second thought, after reading the blurb, was "They're both the same age?" Somehow, I had the idea that Norman was much older. Maybe it's coz I think golf is an old man's game.

"That is what gets me, we are a "throw away" society. Make an effort? Bah! When the reading of the sunday paper causes me to come to the engagements/just married section, I can't help but wonder about which of the happy faces on the pages will be filled with frowns and anger someday. Greg Norman's marriage was a long one, Everett had a shorter marriage, but it lasted something like a decade plus. My sense on the majority of modern marriages is that the people getting married do not delve deeply into whether they love the person that they are to marry, men and women have attractions to or outright flings with others before their marriages and do not see that as a major red flag.

That's interesting, because I would have figured that Evert was much older, simply because I've HEARD of her for much longer than I've heard about Norman. As well, she's been retired for longer than he has, so it sort of implies being older.

Yes, you're right, steelergirl. And rcade obviously reads more gossip columns than I do :-).

I didn't know that, rcade. That makes it even worse, IMO. Cave_Man, I agree 100% even though I am divorced. (me, once, ex-hubby, he is on #6). owlhouse, I gotta admit, I also enjoy a good trash read (re National Enquirer) once in a while too. :)

And rcade obviously reads more gossip columns than I do I can't decide which is more embarrassing -- reading gossip columns or doing a Google search to determine when Evert and Norman jettisoned their last spouses.

I can't decide which is more embarrassing -- reading gossip columns or doing a Google search to determine when Evert and Norman jettisoned their last spouses. Or the fact that you get 176,000 returns.
