Bowden's Bowl Busted: As many as 25 Seminoles will miss the Music City bowl due to academic issues; ie. cheating

The team stinks anyways. Get rid of the entire roster. This would be a good time for Bobby Bowden to fade into the sunset.

The university reported its findings in a letter to the NCAA in September after a six-month investigation by the school revealed at least 23 athletes in various sports were interviewed in regard to cheating on an online music history exam. Cheating in an online music history exam? That is some weak shit dudes. a) You've got to be kidding me. You needed to cheat to pass.... this? What "Comtemporary Theory of Hacky Sack" was all filled up? What about "Math in Seinfeld, Seasons 4-8"? b) You got caught cheating on an ONLINE exam? Please stop calling yourself a college student (which is probably part of a larger issue, but I just don't have the time).

Wow, this had got to be THE dumbest thing I've ever heard for more than 1 reason. A: Why in the Hell would a student have to cheat on a "Music History" exam? If a music class isn't a blow off class what in the Hell is? B: Why would the university report it to the NCAA? Seriously, why open up a can of worms when you don't have to, hay Florida State, IT'S A MUSIC EXAM!!!! DOES ANYBODY GIVE A DAMN IF THEY CHEATED? ARE THEY GOING TO USE THAT SKILL AFTER COLLEGE? There are more reasons but why bother. LOL Great job FSU you're recruiting for the next 3-4 years just went down the crapper.

I'm not exactly sure of the curriculum, but I sincerely doubt it consisted entirely of American pop music. This isn't to come to the defense of Florida State players, either. To cheat on an online (so therefore, open book/web) exam smacks of laziness and stupidity. But there are thousands of college students out there who take great pride in studying music history, and rightly so. There's this little thing called classical music out there, it's been around for a while, y'might want to check it out. It's got an amazingly rich and complex history, making it a topic worth teaching in, oh let's say universities.

I think that they have hit bottom. I can't stand Bowden anyway and I guess he will stoop to anything to get an athlete eligible to play on gamedays. I have nothing but contempt for him after his final poll in the season had a OU team ranked much lower than the KU team that MU beat. And OU was also ranked lower than MU after thumping them in the Big 12 Championship game. How can you ever explain that as anything other than sour grapes for OU coming into the Orange Bowl and kickin' off on his Seminoles to win the National Championship in 2000? The game has passed him by and he needs to turn it over to someone that has integrity. And by the way, things like cheating and plagarism will get most people kicked out of school much less suspended for a mere four games. At least at the university that I am at.

posted by Mickster at 04:34 PM on December 19, 2007

I'll tell you why they were cheating. They were probably the kind of lunkheads who think "Oh, music history, that should be a breeze" and then were stunned to discover that the course actually was more about, you know, history than about listening to tunes. When they discovered they actually needed to know names and dates and concepts and events and all those other things history classes demand, they realized they'd made a dreadful mistake. They actually had to study, but didn't, so cheating sounded like a better option than failing. And why tell the NCAA? Because that is the ethical thing to do. Presumably, these University things are about education first and athletics second.

posted by Joey Michaels at 04:37 PM on December 19, 2007

Music history? So, what. Cheating is cheating. I see no distinction between Calculus 1 and Music History. Especially on line cheating, I don't know if the Bowden could afford to play brain dead players that dumb anyway.

What would prevent the players from sitting together in some WiFi hotspot? I thought the online courses were developed for students who could not attend an actual class/auditorium. I guess I'm wrong. Seems to me that if you allow on-campus students take part in online courses you should expect some cheating. Or, if this was just an online exam for a on-campus course, then maybe part of the laziness extends to the faculty.

Sorry just think certain things should be pointed out. won't do it again. and the 14 years ended in 2001 the year after we lost to ou in the orange bowl. didn't you [mickster] refer to the 2000 orange bowl in your comments. i quess it's ok for you to go back that far but noone else can. and as for cheating i would bet the farm that all schools do it. some get caught some don't and some do the right thing and turn themselves in. it's kinda fun trying to educate the GENERAL public about the NCAA. not to many people know what's going on, and even the rules of the game. ever play the game? i doubt it.

posted by rwstclair42 at 09:31 AM on December 20, 2007

rwstclair42.... you can go back as long as you wish. I pointed out a snub from Bowden to Stoops by ranking them lower than a team they had beaten twice in one season. How could you explain that? By the way, it was Stoops who kicked his cheaters off the team immediately - Bomar his prized QB, and Quinn a starting O-Lineman. Put his reciever at QB and made it to the Fiesta Bowl. What a GOOD story out of foul play. Now I do agree with you that probably many schools will be caught in the business of cheating. It is everywhere, just has to be caught. But, FSU hasn't been a real contender in many years whereas the Sooners have played in 5 of the last 8 years in a BCS game. As for the sport, yeah played through high school (LB and TE) and accepted a scholarship for college ball (A & M). Didn't get to play due to a severe back injury. That is why the education part is so valuable. If you don't get anything else, you have a good education. I have been a teacher and counselor now and taking more University classes for a Masters in Psychology. Anything else you care to know?

ok, florida state did win the acc in 2005. we have played in more bcs title games than anyone else. we are a contender every year. not living up to the potential. we have been to more conceutive bowl games than anyone. i could go on all day. i quess you forgot about bobby kicking snoop of the team before the 2000 orange bowl. he alson kicked randy moss of the team for smokeing pot. he kicked Laveranues Coles off the team. i quess those guys are nobodys. needless to say bobby does his part to keep his program as clean as he can. lets face it, a lot of these players arn't the brightest people in the world. we all do make mastakes.

oh yeah, this year he suspended Xavier Lee [the back up qb] for 2 games for academic reasons. as it turned out we needed him for the vt game and had to go to a redshirt freshmen for three quarters and went into the 4th quarter with the lead. only to lose it because of the great defensive adjustments by vt. we've got plenty of depth. and we will have to prove that in the music city bowl. i quess we will have to wait and see.

You two are really hitting each other hard aren't you? In all fairness, Bowden is way past his prime. Although he will be remembered as a great coach, let's face it, he's no Paterno. Just when you think the game has passed him by he suprises you. No I'm not a Penn State fan. I agree with Mickster that Fl St has not been a real contender in years. Big deal they won the ACC in 2005. Like the ACC's been that tough the past 4 to 6 years? That's not what this is about anyway. in my personal opinion I think people need to look at the big picture. At major schools football is what puts $ in their pockets. Yes, it is a school and you're there to get an education. Don't you think for 1 minute that major schools want to lose $. The better you are the more air time your going to get. The more air time you get the more $ you get. Florida State is going to lose $. The aftershock of this is going to be bigger than you think. Recruits who maybe are great on the field but not so great in the classroom r going 2 think twice about Fl St. Look, when it comes down to it, players put buts in the seats, in turn the university, the Alumni and other donors contribute more $. Ethics my ass, a major University needs to know what battles to fight and what battles to leave alone. For Fl St to even report this, in my opinion, is a serious mistake. Believe me, they had bigger fish to fry than players cheating on a music exam. I know I'm going to get the age old, "Educations first and athletics are 2nd", and "That's the problem with America today", and "This is why our moral standards as a whole are crumbling". MONEY, MONEY, MONEY....That's what college sports are about like it or not. A lot of players do go through school and do not do anything in the classroom, a lot of players do their own work and graduate. athletes will always get special treatment, It will always be that way like it or not. You want be overly "ETHICAL", O.K. but your going to lose recruits.

posted by B10 at 11:08 AM on December 20, 2007

i don't think it is going to hurt recruting as much as you think. securing jimbo for life after bobby is a good move. a lot of kids in the past few years have made a decision on a school thinking bobby is done and not knowing the future. remember fsu has "only" been playing football since 1947, and won there confrence in 48/49&50. your right who cares about the confrence championship anyway. our goal is a national championship, where most schools seem to only care about a confrence championship. your right it is and always will be about money. very sad. everything seems to be driven by money.

posted by rwstclair42 at 12:10 PM on December 20, 2007

our goal is a national championship, where most schools seem to only care about a confrence championship. What? What schools only care about a conference championship? That's the first I've heard that ever said. Maybe I'm misunderstanding you but you talk like Fl St. is still a powerhouse. With all due respect they haven't been a major factor in the grand scheme of things for a long time. They make a BCS game here and there but they really have been insignificant. They were 6th in ACC play this year. LOL No offense but that sucks. When Wake and BC outplay you in the same season somethings wrong. Not to take anything away from those teams but in days of old Fl State would have had them for breakfast. our goal is a national championship You have to win the ACC first and from what it looks like that isn't going to happen anytime soon. securing jimbo for life after bobby is a good move It soesn't matter who you secure, if your school is getting a reputation for squeling on its athletes the recruiting is going to be an uphill battle.

posted by B10 at 01:29 PM on December 20, 2007

...if your school is getting a reputation for squeling on its athletes the recruiting is going to be an uphill battle. FSU had to tell the NCAA about this. Otherwise, if the NCAA got wind of this cheating scandal, without FSU telling them, then I'm sure they would've put the hammer down on the school's athletic department. Losing scholarships and bowl eligibility does a lot more harm to a school's football program than some theoretical recruitment hurdle. Just ask Auburn and Clemson.

posted by NoMich at 01:49 PM on December 20, 2007

Say what you want, FSU could have kept it under wraps. I realize a lot of people disagree with that and that's fine. Yes I agree that being bowl ineligable would significantly hurt your program. That's only common sense. As for a football rpogram having a "theoretical" hurdle, well that remains to be seen. The NCAA can get wind of anything they want, proving it happened is a different story. That's just my opinion.

we beat bc in all aspects of the game. the last time bc lost at home before we beat them this year was 2 years ago to fsu. they were ranked #2 when we beat them this year. LOL!!!!!!!!! if the ncaa wants to get a school, any school all they have to do is focus in on them and they will find something. to blame everything on a coach, no matter who it is, is not fair to the coach. he can only do so much. these kids are, for the most part, out of control. not to mention spoiled. every day you hear about a high profile athlete having a run in with the law. thanks NoMich, good point. and oh by the way has anybody ever won three championships in a row? in any division?
