Players Stop Playing Bundesliga Match Over Abusive Banner: After the visiting Bayern Munich fans unfurled a banner insulting the owner of the host team Hoffenheim, players on both Bundesliga sides spent the last 11 minutes of the match kicking the ball to each other aimlessly instead of playing. The banner unfurled by ultras was directed at Dietmar Hopp and translates to "Hopp is a son of a whore."

MLS Soccer Begins 25th Season: Major League Soccer marks a quarter century of existence with today's opening day kickoffs. The new season will include 50,000 fans at Nashville SC's first game tonight on Fox, Inter Miami CF's home opener on March 14 against LA Galaxy and the first all-star game pitting the league's best against Liga MX All-Stars. But the big story in these parts is whether Orlando City can end its all-time streak of never making the playoffs.

XFL Has First Kick Return TD Under New Rules: As part of efforts across football to make kickoffs less dangerous, the fledgling XFL football league has different kickoff rules than the NFL. Both teams line up five yards apart in the receiving half at the 30- and 35-yard-lines and keeping still until the returner touches the ball. The league's first kick return for a touchdown occurred Sunday when Joe Powell of the St. Louis Battlehawks ran 90 yards against the New York Guardians.

Daytona 500 Ends with Horrifying Airborne Crash: Denny Hamlin became the fourth back-to-back winner of the Daytona 500 in a photo finish with Ryan Blaney, but the achievement is overshadowed by the condition of Ryan Newman, whose car went airborne in the final seconds of the race. Newman's condition was unknown but drivers and Fox's broadcast team were showing obvious concern. Black screens were brought out to keep fans from seeing Newman's removal from the car and transport to an ambulance.

Man City Banned from Champions League for Financial Breaches: UEFA has banned Manchester City for two years from the Champions League and other international tournaments for "serious breaches" of financial rules. The Blues can't play in the 2020/21 and 2021/22 Champions League. This opens a spot for the fifth place Premier League team to qualify (currently Sheffield United).
