Patriots Sign Cam Newton to 1-Year Deal: The New England Patriots have never beaten Cam Newton, a curious statistic that will persist now that he's playing for the team. Newton signed a one-year incentive-stuffed deal. Of the likely starters in the NFL this season, Nick Foles and Lamar Jackson are the others to never lose to New England. Both are 1-0 and Newton 2-0. "Under Belichick, the Patriots have loved to sign players whom they struggled playing against," writes Nora Princiotti of The Ringer.

What the Hell, Bill Simmons?: The idea for LeBron James' The Decision broadcast came from a reader email published by Bill Simmons. Simmons pitched the idea enthusiastically to ESPN executives and James' team (something he never told his readers), was left out of the actual event and wrote hours before it occurred that it was a terrible idea, calling it "an hour-long show in which he picked his next team and tainted his legacy in the process."

Liverpool win Premier League: Reds' 30-year wait for top-flight title ends: Klopp's side have produced one of the most memorable campaigns in Premier League history, amassing 86 points already, with a record of 28 victories, two draws and a single defeat from their 31 games. Their title win this season is the earliest on record, at least with regard to games remaining. And Manchester City's 100-point total for a season is one of numerous records Liverpool can still break.

When the Media Owns the Teams It Covers: The way TSN buried the news of Auston Matthews testing positive for coronavirus has Ed Willes worried about media ownership of teams they cover, since the network and the Toronto Maple Leafs share common owners. "The lines between teams and the people who report on them have been blurred beyond recognition," he writes.

NBA Returns July 31 Without 8 Teams: The NBA will return on July 31 with 22 teams playing eight games at Disney World to finish determining the playoff field. Eight other teams won't return at all because they weren't going to make the postseason anyway: Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Golden State, Minnesota and the New York Knicks. That has gotta hurt.
