Would there be any objection if, rather than my wife influencing my draft, I just told her to sign up for her own team in the league? Just thought I would put that out there for a thumbs up or thumbs down on that.

Can't possibly fathom what the hell Hall voters are thinking on Alomar, unless they are really overreacting to the spitting incident. Alomar and Hirschbeck have become friends since then, and Alomar has contributed much to Hirschbeck's charitable causes.
Well, you can tell by The Arrogant Worms' song lyric (from Me Like Hockey) "Baseball slow like Forrest Gump, 'cept when Robbie spits on ump." That its been some time since the incident. Some people will just use any excuse to not let someone in first ballot who deserves to go in. Some voters seem get stuck thinking so-and-so was not first ballot so Alomar (or whatever current player it is) shouldn't be. Thereby making the same mistake that yesteryear's voters made.
Or..maybe it giving them too much credit to even over analyze their voting? Maybe they plunk darts at a dart board with players' names on it for all I know.

Rafael Palmeiro is going to be at the same time as Bagwell, and he does have those 3000 hits...
I think there is a lot of hate out there towards Palmeiro in that regard. I also thought that Palmeiro was allowed to play on and collect his 3000 hit following a positive test, but I could be mistaken on that part. Not sure how its going to play out.
The Blyleven thing is frustrating. He certainly gets my vote for best curveball.

Well, I know that in other sports, like baseball, for example, when I played I had a teammate who bunted for a hit when we were up by 9 or 10 runs and then stole second. The rest of us, his teammates, just told him get ready to have them throw at your head for being a dumbass next time up and that he had it coming. I think hockey probably has dangerous consequences for the running up the score/stat-padding, or violating unwritten rules, but is a bench clearing brawl the equivalent for basketball then? Hard foul?

But, when he was hurt last year should he have cut the streak short, allowed the Jets to move on then, and had surgery on his arm at that time? Did he place the streak above the right thing for the team there? Not sure he did, just throwing it out there. The Jets probably weren't going anywhere anyway.

I don't like seeing people dress as "Indians" for a football game. I don't like seeing people do the "tomahawk chop" and "imitate" Indian people. When I watch the 1991 world series replays it really bugs me to see all the dumb people in Atlanta doing that chop stuff and mocking Indian people (glad the Twins won). Do most people think the toothy-big-nosed-smiling "Chief Wahoo" Cleveland Indians logo is a good depiction of Indians? Probably not. The name of the team is where those things all come from. Its not separate.
I just don't see how it is a good thing to name a team after a race of people's skin color, even if that is where it comes from (which it seems like that is what you are arguing). I wouldn't support going to a game in blackface, why should we accept this type of fandom and usage of a race for a team name.
It won't help people on the reservations to change the name, but it doesn't honor them either to use their race as a stereotype, caricature, or punchline. Maybe I can't convince bdaddy of any of that, and so be it. I just have a real hard time understanding his support of it (or it seems his opposition to any change really rather than supporting it).
I also went to school at the University of North Dakota where this debate or argument takes place on a local basis.

Yeah, 768 is not enough of a sample to draw the conclusion that the majority of Native Americans are OK with the term redskins.
Not even enough for many Reservation's populations. Not around here anyway. Just Red Lake, White Earth, and Leech Lake in Minnesota have around 40,000 enrolled members. That is just three reservations here.
where did they pull their sample from?

I was a fan when I was a kid but the older I got the less I liked it. And, man, I loved those teams when I was a kid wearing my "Hogs" and Riggo's Rangers" shirts, etc. No more. Maybe if they change the name.

Really the win was the result of a lucky speculation. Well, you played it smart and things broke the way you thought they would. That's just playing your hand perfectly is all. I, on the other side of the puck, really got pounded in this league near the end after burning through all my games prematurely. I'm not sure it would have made any difference however. But: mistakes were made!

For every Bull Durham, there are several movies like Major League 2 and Major League: Back to the Minors. It is the way of the world. On the Talladega Nights thing, expecting more than a goofy ass NASCAR parody out of it is expecting too much. Like expecting the baseball game at the end of The Naked Gun to have realism instead of its ridiculous goodness.

I went to a Minnesota Swarm game back in March, because my company gave people on our project tickets to the suite for that game. (Won't let us worker-bees go to a Wild game...grr. But I digress...) It was surprisingly entertaining: plenty of scoring, a fight, and a PA announcer who trash-talked a lot. I'd go again, if I could. Its kind of shitty that there are not going to be any Swarm games this year. I wanted to make it to one and only saw their games on TV. On Versus, I think?

That was really interesting. I thought he really put it well about the team name "Indians." I also agree with him on the value of Deloria's Custer Died For Your Sins and that it still holds up. Yeah, I don't recall Locklear either. "The reason I went into baseball as a profession was that when I left school, baseball offered me the best opportunity both for money and achievement. I adopted it because I played baseball better than I could do anything else, because the life and the game appealed to me and because there was so little of racial prejudice in the game. There has been scarcely a trace of sentiment against me on account of birth. I have been treated the same as other men." - Chief Bender They need to add Chamberlain's name to the Baseball Almanac link. Ellsbury's name is already on there.

In the posted stuff here, I think that the most effective rebuttal of her column was the comedy piece that igottheblues linked to. It was better than the hissy shit-fit thrown by Gundy. The shit he was saying was ridiculous and having a shit fit just made a lot more people read the original column too.
