For the Love of God Stop Betting Parlays

With my background in engineering and the associated mathematics, I once felt that I could correctly calculate my probability of winning and the amount of profit. Parlay betting is much more complicated. It's no longer a matter of simple choice, like the perfecta or trifecta at the race track. Parlays in team sports are too dependent upon the action of the other players on both teams. Even a single prop bet, such as Player A scores more or less than X points, is not a good idea. The line is set by those who have a lot more to gain or lose than we do, and they have a lot more expertise and data too.

While in between jobs a few years ago, my son interviewed with FanDuel for a user research position. He was a finalist, but he didn't get the job. Now he is a senior manager for user experience research at Trip Advisor. We were talking about it recently, and he says that he is awfully glad that he has no part in anything that tries to make money from the gullibility of people.

And here comes the lawsuit...

Unmentioned critical ripple effects of this episode:

- Indianapolis will have to ditch the Naptown nickname, as it is currently associated with far too much excitement

- Rex Ryan will have to get a tattoo removed

- The federalized Oregon National Guard will be ordered to help restore order in the lawless midwest metropolis, now seen as far more dangerous than Portland

- The Irsay Sisters will hire a spiritual medium to conduct a seance in an effort to make sure their late father never finds out about the incident

And here comes the lawsuit...

Agreed. Including Fox in the lawsuit seems like an obvious money grab. I'm sure they're not expecting (or even remotely prepared) to get Fox in court, but are hoping for a quick settlement that pays off the client, and secures a handsome fee for the attorney.

I guess in some ways, this is better than just being the Buttfumble guy?

I'm not certain what legal grounds they might have to pursue Fox. Obviously, you go after the party with the deepest pockets, and who is most likely to settle, but if I was Fox, I'd fight this tooth and nail. I guess Sanchez was only in town as part of his broadcasting job, but (i) without being certain of the circumstances, he wasn't at the location of the fight as part of his job; and (ii) his being drunk should negate any connection to being "at work" unless Fox was feeding him booze, and it likely also voids any insurance policy they have on him.

When I was in the casino biz, I would make one parlay every week. My brother and I would each put in $5, and we'd bet the winner of the Monday Night Football game and the over/under, just to keep us engaged. Even that simple 2-leg parlay was a consistent loser; I think we won maybe 20% of the time.

I was told by an old timey gambler to bet only on an underdog and only then if you feel that they will actually win the game. Also, *never ever* bet on parlays. They are nothing but sucker bets and only chumps put money on them.

When "sports wagering" arrived in NC a year or two ago, I put $100 in an account and have been playing with that money ever since then. I think I'm back up to close to that. But then again, I follow that guy's advice and hardly ever gamble.

Upsets: Jacksonville over Seattle and Miami over Chargers at home and Tennessee over Las Vegas on the road. Picking Kansas City over Detroit feels like an upset but the Chiefs are favored by 2.5. The Lions juggernaut will be stopped by Kansas City's desperate need for a win. If this is who Baltimore is without Lamar Jackson, go back and give him retroactive MVPs for the past seven seasons.

I don't know what to think about the NCAA allowing college athletes to bet on pro sports.

The approval language includes blather about "encouraging healthy habits for student-athletes who choose to engage in betting activities".

Sort of like a liquor ad that urges folks to drink responsibly. Cross your fingers and hope.

Doesn't take much imagination to think of the potential for greater harm and abuse than is already happening, with college and pro players getting death threats when bettors aren't happy with what happened to the spread or the props.

I feel kinda sheepish admitting it because of reasons, but I'm finding myself pretty caught up in Baker Mayfield's season. I'm not going to go so far as to say I'm *rooting* for the Bucs (yet), but he's become must-watch football every weekend.

Remarkable win last night on the heels of the Pats beating the Bills and the Broncos beating the Eagles, both on the road. And the Texans crushing the Lamar-less Ravens.

Might as well add the remaining non-injured players on the Niners roster beating the Rams.

Things are pretty wide open right now. There are a lot of possibilities. I'm glad that the teams that were rated as slam dunks pre-season are anything but inevitable now.

Lessons for Mr. Sanchez:

1. A man with a gun is a man to watch, but a man with a knife is a man to fear.

2. Never piss off an old guy. Not only are we usually ill tempered and crotchety but also once we have passed a certain age, we really don't care about possible consequences.

Who had a worse Saturday, Belichick & North Carolina or Franklin & Penn State?

My son, the Penn State grad, has informed me that he is going to go to grad school somewhere that doesn't have athletics. By doing so he will remove all of the odor attached to this season's Nittany Lions. Franklin should be asked to leave, preferably at the business end of a well-aimed foot. He can take both of his coordinators with him. I saw an unimaginative offense, verging at times on flat out stupid. I also saw a defense that didn't know how to adjust to what the opponent was doing. Can you not spy on a quarterback who is very capable running through the middle of the field?
