Booing:: not just for Canadians anymore!

For the record, I'm not offended. As long as the Oilers win, that is.

If this happened during the US's national anthem FOX News would be boiling over with suggestions to invade the offending country. This is sad.

Every game I went to (all in the US, and none against a Canadien team) they only played the US national anthem. The games in Canada that I have seen on TV, they played both. I always wondered why, I guess this explains it. "I'm Canadian; they're just booing the team, not the anthem,'' Patrick Marleau said. "That's how I took it.'' That's how I take it too, but I still think it was disrespectful.

So wait... Who was singing. Ashley Simpson, Carl Lewis, Roseanne? Cause if so, who could blame the fans? With those few Caveats, I think that this is disgusting and Shameful. For shame America, for shame!

posted by everett at 12:04 PM on May 15, 2006

skater, they play both when US teams are playing Canadian teams here (in hockey, baseball, and i would assume basketball as well). only time i've heard boos was during a few yankee/blue jay games, and there were only a couple jackasses doing it.

Every game I went to (all in the US, and none against a Canadien team) they only played the US national anthem. Really, every Islander game I went to played both. The Canadian anthem was met with indifference but no booing. I usually sit during the anthem but it is no way a sign of politically dissent, just inebriation.

posted by HATER 187 at 12:10 PM on May 15, 2006

While I am leary of jinoistic nationalism, (personally, I feel that the Internationale unites the world in song), I try to respect people's sentimentality towards such, and have no problem giving due respect during the singing of anyone's national anthem. Disrespectful of the Sharks fans, yes, but perhaps they realize what I have been saying even after they were up 2-0, that the Oilers are going to advance! Instead of "Oh Canada", maybe it should be "Go Canada"! Just waiting for the invasion. A Canadian Quisling, (Quisling for Canada?).

The most upset I've ever been over a song is when my brother tried to tell me Achillies Last Stand was better than Custard Pie.

posted by HATER 187 at 12:22 PM on May 15, 2006

I saw that. It was pretty tame, as "disrespectful actions" go. Certainly, I wouldn't go revisiting the War of 1812 or anything over it. I thought the fans were great. They stayed in the game long after the team they were pulling for lost the thread and gave up.

Well, game number four, when the U.S. anthem was played, it was booed! So only fair to return the favor! Didn't anyone else hear that or is it just one sided?

posted by BrownDuck at 12:31 PM on May 15, 2006

The article made it sound like that was explicitely not the case, but I have never in my life watched an NHL game, so I have no clue.

posted by BrownDuck at 12:59 PM on May 15, 2006

Meh. No biggie. If they're hockey fans with an once (milliltre?) of sense, they're not booing Canada. And as I recall at the World Juniors, the Vancouverites booed the US anthem pretty mercilessly, too. Game on!

posted by SummersEve at 01:00 PM on May 15, 2006

I don't think it's that big of a deal either, just disrespectful. Heck, I've seen plenty of americans being disrespectful of our own anthem. Is it really that hard to take your hat off and stand quietly for a few minutes?

posted by njsk8r20 at 01:06 PM on May 15, 2006

Americans boo the Canadian national anthem out of stupidity and jealousy (because it's time to admit it, folks -- The Star-Spangled Banner sucks) Canadians boo the American national anthem out of anger over the softwood lumber dispute, immigration policies and because they know Americans will get worked up over something as stupid as a national anthem. Besides, I'm not sure how I'm supposed to take the righteous indignation of Americans about the desecration of their anthem when they allow people like Whitney Houston to sing it.

posted by wfrazerjr at 01:18 PM on May 15, 2006

Maybe they were booing the Sharks for letting the Oilers take over the series.

This is one of the stupidest rationales in the world: the "they did it, so we can, too!" line of reasoning. Asinine views like this are better suited for eight-year-olds, and are not worth squat when discussing anything other than who hit/touched who first.

posted by The_Black_Hand at 01:32 PM on May 15, 2006

posted by gspm at 01:49 PM on May 15, 2006

Kinda funny. 'Specially when you consider that a buttload o'guys on both teams are, well, from Canada. Marleau's gracious enough not to give it much thought. One part testosterone, two parts alcohol and and a bag of Tim Horton's donuts, if you're lucky enough to have 'em nearby, tends to have this effect.

I don't think that anyone should boo the Canadian or the U.S. national anthems. Being a veteran, my feeling is that you're booing a flag that people fought and died for. But they also fought and died for your right to boo that flag and that anthem. Ironic, isn't it? That said I must also say that I've always been amazed at the energy Canadian fans have for their anthem. Almost everyone you see is singing along with it. I once had two Canadian strippers hum it for me down...there. Best anthem I've ever had!

Thought that they could hook up with me so when he got out, they'd have a place to crash. Once I found that out, they were outa there! Best two weeks of my life, though. Set the standard at the local bar by being the only guy in town that could hook up with two Canadian strippers by asking them to play a little two-on-one foosball...

In this morning paper it touched on game four and the booing while the U.S. Anthem was being played. Turns out a picture of Joe Thornton was shown on the scoreboard. We do not know that, so it comes across as booing the Anthem. We love our country and will defend it, if that is returning the favor, so be it. you can talk about being wrong or whatever, I will guarantee the Oiler fans will boo even louder against the U.S. Anthem in game six.

Brownduck - dude, if booing the Canadian national anthem in a hockey arena is "defending your country" than I.... Well, I have no idea how to finish this sentence. That's just, well, Gah? Trust me, the Oiler faithful are hardly anti-American. They sell oodles of oil to you. That big mall they have? Yep, thanks to good old American cash. Those new malls, houses, hotels, luxury items coming? Yep, good old American cash again. The Oiler fans love you. They love everything about you. My guess is they were booing Thornton - who at this point, all San Jose fans should boo. He may be the MVP of the regular season, but disappear much, Joe?

I haven't been to Canada in a few years, so maybe gas really is that expensive, but they give you a goddamn form to recoup costs from the VAT when you enter the country. If you're not listening, you must be pretty excited to get in. Or maybe you've never been. Either way, thanks for the valuable thoughts.

your $6.00+ a gallon on gas Here comes the math! There are 3.785411803 litres in a gallon. One Canadian dollar is worth 0.89815 US dollars. At my local gas station, it was 0.984 Cdn for a litre of gasoline. Therefore, it would cost me $3.72 Cdn to buy a gallon of gas. Therefore, it would cost me $3.34 US to buy a gallon of gas. The going price of gasoline(according to this site) in Detroit (the nearest major US market) is $2.96 US. Much cheaper, but we are talking about the automobile capital of North America. In actuality, the gas is cheaper in my Canadian city (after all the conversions and taxes) than it is in California . So, in conclusion, pbbbbt!
