Dammit my record of being ahead of the deadline is over. Clearly I'm late, way late. My excuse is lack of access to any computer that could burn a disc. That obstacle has been eradicated and discs will go out in the next 48 hours...sorry.

My final playlist isn't quite narrowed down yet, but you can be sure it won't have Nickleback. Aesop Rock will however be making an appearance.

Also came via MeFi. And even though I'm not commenting much anymore I come here every day. I use to comment lots when where there were so few members because it was so easy to pick the low hanging fruit and make the simple, brilliant observation. Now someone inevitably beats me to it. I am still salty about the time the pantheon pulled my post about Vin Baker being traded to the Celtics. I believe my post was titled "Later Cocksucker" or something similarly mature.

Grum, Cabrera is from Venezuela and Bass dominated Japanese baseball 25 years ago. I intentionally said "American players" and not "players in America". Although in principle I agree with you. My point is more that Japanese elite players are adjusting to life very well in the MLB.

There are too many non-objective factors at play. The same exact kinds of arguements you run into when comparing players from different eras. These days a case can be made that Japanese players are the equal of American players, but the fact that Japanese leagues don't attract the best world-wide talent factors in. Oh never played against talented Latin players or at least very few black players. Especially in Oh's day I believe Japanese teams could only have a maximum of two gaijin players (who were often MLB washouts). It's a little too apples and oranges to make much of a comparison I think.

I actually learned about Aesop Rock on an Ask Metafilter thread - somebody was enquiring about underground hiphop. That same thread taught me about Sage Francis and Atmosphere as well...I have never seen him live but he plays at the Showbox in Seattle everytime he has a new LP to promote.

Well shoot man. I threw it in there at the end. I can't help but like two songs off that cd. And this one is the balls when you're doing that last set at the gym and you're drag-assing. You know, it wouldn't be a bad one for Sammy to listen to when he sets out to do some face-punching.

chico, I can burn you Atmosphere and Aesop too. If you want to buy them the Atmosphere album is "God Loves Ugly" and the Aesop Rock albums, in the order I think you might get them are #1 Labor Days, #2 Bazooka Tooth, and #3 Float. yerfatma, thanks. and i would love to receive some and will continue to exchange with any more people who are interested.
posted by vito90 at 01:41 AM on August 04, 2004
chico! Glad you like it. Which Atmosphere track are you referring to? There are two on there. Did you figure out the story in Aesop Rock's "Honeycomb Interlude"? If you know that the poem is about a summer he spent as a young 'un getting high with his friends all day every day, and that he grew out of that but some of his friends didn't then it might help you follow along with the lyrics a bit. Brilliant stuff. And that Sage Francis track is the boombazi too.

That Viktor Vaughn Vaudeville Villian album is the only one I have - I think it's okay but not great. Do you recommend another album by him? Maybe I should check out Madvillian? Is the Spearhead album more known for poetry or beats?
posted by vito90 at 11:34 AM on July 30, 2004
Nope the only Franti I heard was the Disposable Heroes - I never even heard any Spearhead, which was a big part of his career... Ren was indeed a talented member of NWA. The track I included is a really tight rhyme. It has top-notch boasts, using cuss words for effect, not to carry the day. It's the only gangsta style track on the cd, but it's what gangsta style would aspire to if only gangsta style would aspire to something. Most of the tracks tell great stories but it can take several listens to get them. The most incredible poem is the "Scarecrow" track by Rehab. The most poignant tale is the one by Sage Francis. My favorite is Aesop's Honeycomb Interlude.
