You won't believe this but ...: Soccer fans, I have an announcement I want to make to you. You may not believe me but I just had to share it with my SpoFi soccer buddies. Details inside.

whooooo.....the suspense

I'm the new interaction designer (I get to figure out and specify how the whole thing works, not how it looks or what pretty pictures to use) for two Yahoo! thingies related to sports: - FIFAworldcup.yahoo.com (yes, the official site) - Broadband (audio/video) players across the Yahoo! network, which includes sports properties such as: -- Soccerpass (right now, FREE recorded video streams of selected MLS, Serie A and Latin American matches) -- Collegepass (looks like free and subscription audio and video of college men's and women's basketball, football and baseball games - I don't know if any of it is live, but I just started Monday) And yes, I'm serious. I'm really excited to share it with you, but at the same time a little shy and unsure about putting it out there. I guess I'd like to have you guys as my "brain trust" for stuff you like, don't like, ideas, etc. At the same time, I can't promise you goodies or inside scoops. And this is not a solicitation on behalf of my employer or anything business-like like that, blah blah. So, that's it.

All this exciting work, btw, will also cause me to spend much less time at SpoFi. :-( But I'll be around for the fantasy leagues and your thoughts.

Way to go dude! Nothing like indulging in your passions. Besides - you're perfect for the gig.

posted by WeedyMcSmokey at 11:17 PM on June 30, 2004

Thank you, Weedy. Thank you. This job is the closest thing I've ever had to "indulging my passions." Well, at least, work-wise.

Well done, sir. The Yahoo site looks great. How else would I've known that the next round of qualifying for the African region is this coming up weekend? You do realize that this means you'll have to change your fucked off name, right?

You do realize that this means you'll have to change your fucked off name, right? No, it does not. I think it lends my profile some much-needed savoir faire. However faux it might be.

actually, I was just thinking the upgrade to wc.2k6. beta version, for the time being, of course. ;)

Can we change the username? I thought we were stuck with what we started with.

Man, indulging ones passions, I have a vague recollection of something like that. Big YO! TO WC2002

Rock on wc2k2, that's great news. Does that mean you'll be in line for free tickets?

posted by trox at 08:36 AM on July 01, 2004

Congratulations.....that is so cool that you get to live your passion while employed at teh same time!!

posted by smithers at 09:14 AM on July 01, 2004

dude, that's awesome!

official world cup website. very cool. see about permitting free streaming world cup highlights (ala the bbc), maybe not to the world at large, but just to the spofi collective. or maybe just me. i should have a tv by then so maybe never mind.

posted by gspm at 09:26 AM on July 01, 2004

Well, thanks everyone for the good wishes. No, I don't think I have dibs on tickets. Also, I don't think I'll get to go, unless I pay my own way. :( I'll have to work on that. Maybe I'll go next year, for a planning meeting or something. As for highlights, gspm, I think that's a good idea. I'm hot on the Virtual Replay, too. And any other cool tech that develops between now and 2006. Yeah!

Sheesh. Way to wave the fact that you actually have a job in all our faces. Never mind that it's fulfilling and something you're all passionate about and stuff on top of that. Puts the rest of us underworked slacker types to shame. Phltphlhphtht. Congratulations, buddy.

posted by chicobangs at 03:04 PM on July 01, 2004

Does this mean you changed employers too? Cuz most of the Yahoo! staff work in Sunnyvale, about six minutes from my office (and house, but in a different direction).

posted by billsaysthis at 03:42 PM on July 01, 2004

Imagine the kickASS interviews we could have now!

Thanks everyone for the warm wishes. I'm honored. Sheesh. Way to wave the fact that you actually have a job in all our faces. chico: Then, I guess I won't tell you about the perks every employee gets here. It's like a frickin' college campus (except you get paid to work here). They just had some up-and-coming musician do a concert (Yahoo! owns Launch.com) outside the cafeteria at 4pm today with free beer, wine and soda. But I digress. Does this mean you changed employers too? bill: yeah, I gave two weeks notice, finished last Thursday, and started down in Sunnyvale this past Monday. If you're free, drop by for lunch and I'll give you the tour. You have my contact info.

Sweeeeeeeet. Couldn't happen to a more deserving fellow, unless it had happened to me.

Congrats, bub! So can you like hook me up with a job now?

posted by Samsonov14 at 12:17 AM on July 15, 2004

Where you at Samso? If you're serious ... Search for a job at Yahoo! Find the one you want, let me know. I'll send you my email, take your resume and cover letter and put them through the referral network.

WC, my hard drive at home crashed over the weekend and I lost your email with the nice juicy contact info. Can you resend it please? I thought I guess your work email properly this morning (sent from my work address) but apparently not.

posted by billsaysthis at 05:35 PM on July 15, 2004

Funny. My hard drive died today too. Good thing I'm only three weeks into my job and haven't done _too_ much. Have a new drive now and been rebuilding my life from the past two weeks. Thank god for tech and auto-backup. I think.

posted by worldcup2002 at 06:42 PM on July 15, 2004

At work, since I have a desktop, I just remapped my My Documents folder to my network user drive and then never need to worry. Since we make the freaking disk system used on the network and one of our closest partners makes the backup software, that'll never lead to any trouble. Right?

posted by billsaysthis at 07:13 PM on July 15, 2004

I had lunch at WC's new workplace today. Let's just say that Wow, the dotcom boom hasn't ended there! What a fancy cafeteria they've got. And logo'ed flash memory slabs in the company store.
