Locker Room chit chat. Link dump.

posted by gspm to navel gazing at 01:51 PM - 80 comments

Just figuring that if people have sports links to share that maybe don't make good FPP material then dump em in this thread. Sort of a remainder bin. It had been floated before that it might make a good sidebar feature if there was room for it but until then.... I'd say that the Henry Bekkering dunk video I saw today was pretty interesting. And in terms of dunks, it was interesting (not FPP interesting though) to note recently that Vince Carter admitted to dunking with his left hand for the first time in his life. Whaddya got?

Here's a random facts for you that i cant work into a FPP: - The last three World Series were won by first-year-with-team managers. Brenly - DBacks in 01 Scioscia - Angels in 02 McKeon - Marlins in 03 - SportingNews is picking a Cubs/RedSox WS this year, with Cubs prevailing. The ratings would be through the roof.

My link dumps: I want to post every article Steven Wells has written for the guardian. An example. And I want to talk endlessly about Fash FC, a reality-tv program airing on Bravo in the UK, that features John Fashanu (formerly of Wimbledon/I'm a celebrity) as manager of a non-league side. I'm sure I'm the only one who ever watches it so I'm afraid to post it here though. I should also make a post about the France/England rugby match in the six nations, but I'll leave that to somebody else. That's all for now.

How about sports superstitions? I was thinking about this last night, watching the Wings/Avs on ESPN. Gary Thorne mentioned that Legace was going for a shutout with about a minute left, and sure enough, Colorado scored about 30 seconds later. Anyone got any weird or interesting superstitions they wanna talk about? Here's one of mine...I'll be watching a Wings game, and no matter what the score or how much time is left, if I hear the song "Machinehead" by Bush play over the PA in the arena they're in, I know they'll pull out a win. And they've never dissappointed me...

AthleticsNation had a post yesterday about Keith Foulke and Billy Beane's disagreement on their negotiations. There is a post to SOSH accusing the A's and their fans of sour grapes. Here's the start of the post: Foulke is quoted as saying there were "no real negotiations" with Oakland, just a "take it or leave it" offer. Billy Beane insists the opposite is true, but that the A's simply couldn't match the Sox offer. One of the A's fan sites www.athleticsnation.com is less subtle, calling Keith a "foulking liar" for what they believe was his claim that he'd take a hometown discount to stay in Oakland and then following the money to Boston. Think they're still upset about the playoffs last year? "What's going to be a fun spectator sport for A's fans this season will be to watch the Red Sox for any slumps that Foulke might endure. Think Boston fans will be forgiving? Um, yeah, they're a real forgiving bunch." Nothing will ever approach the intensity of the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry...but especially with all the pre-season talk centering on how great the AL East is, and how the wild card is widely presumed to be coming from the silver medalist there, I think the A's might have the Red Sox games circled on their calendar this year. After a few reasonable responses, it degenerates quit a bit, including this gem: Feel sorry for the A's fans? What a friggin joke. There are no A's fans. There are thugs in Raider gear looking to waste time until September. When they actually sell out a playoff game they can even start to clear their throats to do something more than whine. 20,000 against the Sox or MFY is a great, great day in the mausoleum. 20,000 against the Tigers at Fenway is an impossibility. Blame your ownership, blame your boy wonder genius GM, blame yourselves. But stop whining. The O's and the A's vie for my most hated team. At least the MFY have won in the last four years. Whatever. And yes, the Red Sox will be circled on the calendar. Last postseason's great start and collapse took a few years off my life, and I would like nothing better than to win against the Sox.

posted by dusted at 01:03 PM on March 26, 2004

huh! i will have to check that out at home. the Red Sox/A's series was mean last year. Rough stuff, especially Byrnes pushing Varitek, the Tejada yelling MOTHERF*CKER loud enough you can hear it at home but then crying about how inappropriate it was for his kids watching at home when Derek Lowe seemingly grabbing himself in the general direction of the A's dugout. Mean stuff. Last postseason's great start and collapse took a few years off my life you and me both.

posted by jerseygirl at 01:35 PM on March 26, 2004

Oh man, you had to bring up the Byrnes thing, didn't you? Now I'm angry all over again. The weirdest and stupidest play I've ever seen. Combine that with Miggy's baserunning error, and we looked like the ones with a curse.

posted by dusted at 02:23 PM on March 26, 2004

posted by yerfatma at 03:05 PM on March 26, 2004

i like the A's. Well, the pitching. i'm sorry dusted, but i still giggle when i think about Tejada crying and doing that "I'll remember this Derek Lowe!" stuff. Oh, and Byrnes trying to mosh with Varitek. Mean series, but funny in retrospect.

posted by jerseygirl at 03:08 PM on March 26, 2004

Hey you two: you know how jbou will say something that just gets under your skin and irritates the hell out of you? You'll deserve it next time. There was nothing funny about that series. Nothing. Tragic maybe. Funny? No. If we get a postseason series, I think a couple of bets similar to those between Samsonov14 and Succa will be in order.

posted by dusted at 04:11 PM on March 26, 2004

I hope you aren't serious... but in case you are... No one here mocked you, the rest of the A's fans, mocked the loss, mocked the talent of the team, downplayed the fact they got to the playoffs, no one called you a whiner, no one openly laughed that you didn't advance into the ALCS, no one said "LOL LOL i love when As fans are sad!!", nothing. i even like your team. not that it matters in all of this, but damn. no wait -- daaaayam! Two individual behaviors were funny and/or stupid now that the dust has cleared. You know what else is funny? When Trot Nixon throws a ball into the stands for a fan when there are only two outs and a man is on base. You know what else is funny/stupid? Manny thinking Roger Clemens was throwing at him in Game 3 and started that notorious Zimmer-throwing brawl. Stupid in hindsight. Game 7 which is perhaps an equivalent to what you are distressed over... let's laugh it up for a sec. "Why couldn't Grady Little get his lawn mower working?" "He didn't know how to pull the Starter" The MeFi bitching has spread to SpoFi lately and it seems like everyone is fucking at each other's throats over NOTHING. Garfield left over something stupid. then before that, I think Garfield and... was it fraz?... were fighting over that hockey fight apology-suspension. After a while, it's okay to find humor in things that hurt initially. Its all about the healing.

posted by jerseygirl at 04:59 PM on March 26, 2004

Yep, you're right. I got too worked up. I was reading old news articles, first the "where the hell did he come from?" Jeter relay, then the "tag the damn plate first" Byrnes faux pas. It would be really funny if it wasn't so painful... no, it's really funny.

It means three people died. For the record, I like the A's as well and rooted for them in the the last few post-seasons the Sox weren't in. Before you work the martyr card on us too much, how 'bout me getting out of school early to see Rocket Roger in his Ninja Turtle shoelaces get tossed out of a game and the Sox get bounced from a second ALCS in three years by the A's?

There are no A's fans. There are thugs in Raider gear looking to waste time until September. Amusingly enough I think this is actually true. Zimmer-throwing-brawl has got to go into the lexicon. I want donnybrook, bench-clearing, melee, pier 6, and all other euphemisms used by sportscasters to be replaced. "Uh oh, we've got us a real Zimmer-thrower breaking out here!"

There are no A's fans. There are thugs in Raider gear looking to waste time until September. Amusingly enough I think this is actually true. Amusingly enough, you're wrong. I've been to a ton of A's games and three Raiders games, and the difference in the crowd and atmosphere is tremendous. The A's fans are happy (yeah, I know I've been grumpy today) and knowledgeable, and the atmosphere is intense but fun. The Raiders games are dangerous mobs of drunks and criminals out for blood. Wear an opposing jersey to an A's game and you'll get razzed. Wear one to a Raiders game and you'll be soaked in beer, intimidated and maybe attacked.

But is that the difference between raider/A's fans or football/baseball fans? That's a good question. Football is a much more violent sport, and the culture of football is... less cerebral than that of baseball. I love football as much as the anybody, so it's not a put-down on football fans. I just doubt you'll ever find football fans discussing VORP stats.

Returning dumping links... Brendan Donnelly, pitcher for the Anaheim Angels, broke his nose in 20 places while shagging fly balls last week, which required two surgeries to correct. He has returned to the hospital for a third surgery after experiencing severe nosebleeds. "They told me I lost half the blood in my body," Donnelly said Saturday, adding that he'd lost seven pints of blood. "I didn't realize how serious it was." Yikes!

My wife (a registered nurse) had this to say when I read her the article and asked for her medical opinion: "Ow. That's pretty messed up." She says that the "20 places" means that the cartilage was busted so badly that some slivers/chunks of it were probably floating around in his nasal cavity. Given the relative size of those bits, it's understandable that they didn't clean up all of it and that those may have slowed the healing process. Slow healing = extra bleeding = fucked up situation.

For clarification: There was a long and extended discussion of the Bertuzzi incident. I hesitate to call it a "fight," because that implies the attacking went both ways. Well, in the irish thread, I can say that I see what he's saying but he just didn't know when to accept that certain people weren't going to get it. It's something that plagues interweb discussion; despite how right you might think you are, chances are someone else isn't going to get it and you've just got to move on. Arguments are rarely won on the web and there are a lot of people who can't accept that. Sad to see garfield go, while I butted heads with him once or twice on issues, I found garfield's arguments to be pretty well thought out and his contributions to SpoFi will be missed.
