SpoFi CD Swap Update: So? How happy are people with the mixes? Let's have a little chatter here.

Since the old thread fell off the page, I'll be bold and open another. Also, repeating the offer: If people want to email me the electronic copies of their mix's track list I will be glad to make a webpage for it so people in the other groups can ooh and ahh. My email is bill at the domain in my profile, but please send plain text and not HTML or Word files. I got two excellent mixes and am looking forward to the third soon. Moving is an excellent reason to be late, jason!

I've received one (from sashae) so far, and it fucking rocks. The CD title is a little creepy ("the rubber glove seduction"), but the music is eclectic and cool. Bill, I'll send you the track list later this weekend.

Embarassingly, I am still working on my swap, but so far I am thoroughly enjoying what I've received (thanks samsonov and sashae). I still haven't settled on what I want to put on it, exactly. I will send a cd in, though.

I got one from yermom, but mine is going out this week. Promise! Had a lot of job hunting and, er, job starting in the last couple of weeks (not to mention an archaic CD burner on an archaic machine that I had to clean up). But enough excuses. I wanted to design some funky inserts, but I don't think I'll have time for that (instead of job hunting, I'm now apartment hunting) :

I know I was the last one to send out from my group, but they should have arrived by now. I brought Salmonberry's to work and it is, as the kids like to say, teh roxors. (I have yet to spend much time with corpse's and Ufez's but I suspect I'll be fishing for inspiration through them this week.) Here's my song list, just because: 1. Sidney Bechet - Black Stick 2. Ass Ponys - Earth To Grandma 3. Red Rider - Human Race 4. Coolies - Crack Pipe (Burnin' My Hand) 5. Young Fresh Fellows - Amy Grant 6. Cracker - Happy Birthday To Me 7. John Otway - Green Green Grass of Home 8. Dictionaraoke - Easy 9. Fairfield Four - Dig A Little Deeper 10. Game Theory - Erica's Word 11. The Jam - A Town Called Malice 12. Kirsty MacColl - You Just Haven't Earned It Yet, Baby 13. Mojo Nixon - Girlfriend In A Coma 14. Colin Hay - Overkill 15. Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea 16. Mary Prankster - The World Is Full Of Bastards 17. Ada Jones - Out Of A City Of Six Million People 18. Plimsouls - Everyday Things 19. Timbuk3 - Assholes On Parade 20. Mieskuoro Huutajat - Star Spangled Banner

4. Coolies - Crack Pipe (Burnin' My Hand) Holy crap, I haven't heard that song in years. And it's a beauty of song! Love it.

I have yet to spend much time with corpse's and Ufez's but I suspect I'll be fishing for inspiration through them this week That's b/c I haven't sent mine yet. Sorry, I've been crazy busy. Actually, I burned a master, listened to it twice, and decided it was shit, so I've got to make a new one. I swear on my firstborn's lunch money that I'll get them out later this week though. corpse's is very funky, very dancy. Seems like it would make a great party album, and is the perfect swap for me as it's pretty different from what I normally listen to. I've only had the chance to listen to it twice through, but I am enjoying it.

posted by Ufez Jones at 03:21 PM on July 19, 2004

You fuckers. My super-intense group made me so nervous they had already mailed the CDs before the swap ever started that I rushed them out the door. Thus the lack of labels or covers. The lack of track listing was on purpose. I want no pre-conceived notions. (I did make a CDDB entry for the disc and I'll post the track listing here when I remember/ am at home)

It'd save the whole mailing process and make it easy for everyone to get a copy of any mix they want.

posted by yerfatma at 06:27 PM on July 19, 2004

Adam Green - Jessica Simpson Young Fresh Fellows - Amy Grant Okay, back in the '70s we got jokey album names like Bowi from Nick Lowe and one other from the Stiff gang whose name eludes me, but WTF? What is slsk? I'm not terribly opposed to torrents but would also suggest we could use xdrive's free temp accounts as well for those of us not experienced or comfortable with opening the kimonos, so to speak.

posted by yerfatma at 08:48 PM on July 19, 2004

I'm still burned out from the MeFi swap I haven't mailed out yet, but I've got a decent kernel ready for this one. There were some tracks in my collection that I haven't used in a swap yet and are obvious picks for this mix. I've got some time this weekend, so I'll work on it then. I got Fat Buddha's mix, but haven't had time to listen to music, so there you are. Hopefully work will let up in a few more weeks so I can get some quality listen time in. There's Fila Brazilia on there, that's a great sign.

(i'm not even participating this time around but) rather than torrents which would require some technical know-how and perhaps a co-ordinated seeding effort i am soon going to distribute a mix to a few friends using yousendit. files up to 1 gigabyte, multiple recipients, one week retention on their server. if the music and covers were distributed into a zipped folder you'd be looking at around 100Mb I imagine. if it goes this way then count me in for the next go (provided i clear off some hard drive space). i don't burn cds much anymore but like the idea of mix swaps.

posted by gspm at 04:19 AM on July 20, 2004

Yeah, that definitely gets around the technical problems of creating the torrents and hosting them. The only advantage to BT would be that users could choose what they get instead of authors choosing who gets what.

I finally sent salmacis a cd in exchange for a Euro football match he sent. It's exclusively rap music, but good underground stuff with mad poetry skillz. If anybody else is interested in hearing a rap cd let me know. If you're a fan of Aesop Rock, Atmosphere, Typical Cats, etc. No Jay Z or Puff Dilly to be found.

posted by vito90 at 11:44 AM on July 21, 2004

Definitely interested in that vito-- I was tempted to fit some more "underground" rap on my mix but I figured it would get grating. Besides, Paul Barman can be a bit polarizing.

15 NWA featuring MC Ren - If It Ain't Ruff Wait, I thought that MC Ren was a part of NWA? Or is this a case of a reunion with just one orginal member?

posted by NoMich at 07:40 PM on July 29, 2004

Nope the only Franti I heard was the Disposable Heroes - I never even heard any Spearhead, which was a big part of his career... Ren was indeed a talented member of NWA. The track I included is a really tight rhyme. It has top-notch boasts, using cuss words for effect, not to carry the day. It's the only gangsta style track on the cd, but it's what gangsta style would aspire to if only gangsta style would aspire to something. Most of the tracks tell great stories but it can take several listens to get them. The most incredible poem is the "Scarecrow" track by Rehab. The most poignant tale is the one by Sage Francis. My favorite is Aesop's Honeycomb Interlude.

DOOM is a great MC, but I don't think the production on Vaudeville Villain is well-suited to his vocal style. Get Operation: Doomsday, which he produced himself, and Madvillain, produced by Madlib. They're both really good. Madvillain, especially, is just sick.

chico! Glad you like it. Which Atmosphere track are you referring to? There are two on there. Did you figure out the story in Aesop Rock's "Honeycomb Interlude"? If you know that the poem is about a summer he spent as a young 'un getting high with his friends all day every day, and that he grew out of that but some of his friends didn't then it might help you follow along with the lyrics a bit. Brilliant stuff. And that Sage Francis track is the boombazi too.
