SportsFilter Wiki: I didn't even realize there was a wiki until the thread about favorite books came up. But apparently there is one, and since it's there, any interest in using it? I added my member page, but I am not sure where to start as far as adding more content. Not sure how to use a wiki? Check out this guide on WikiPedia.

I did some work on it once, a long time ago. I'll be darned if I can remember what it was, or if I'm even right on this one. But it's definitely been the sort of thing that I look at every month and say "hey, I should meaty that thing up a li'l". Maybe not those exact words.

I forgot that was there! It would be nice to fill it out a bit.

I am willing to take on any admin duties associated with the wiki depending on how much access the SpoFi admins want to give. For example play with the layout (add an actual logo, etc), monitor spam, etc. I could also be a contact if people have questions on how to use it, or suggestions on topics that may be added and maybe the person making the suggestion doesn't feel they have the wiki chops, etc. I *think* sportsfilter.info is justgary's site (correct me if I am wrong), so contact me if this proposition interests you, Gary (or Rogers). At some point the wiki should be easier to find (I dont' think there is a link anywhere on SpoFi or .info) so that users can gain from it.

In case anyone is reading this thread still, I have added a section to the wiki for the books mentioned in this thread. I have included links to Amazon using rcade's Amazon affiliates code so that if anyone buys a book via that link SportsFilter will get a little revenue. The exception was kickerofelves, who linked to his website and had his own Amazon affiliates code. So I left those to be fair. I missed some of the books either because my amazon searhes didn't return a good result or I just plained missed it. This was a long and tiring addition :) Feel free to add to the wiki, especially this page.

I'd say that terrapin is more of a d00d than a dude. It's cooler that way.

Would anyone be interested in a group at LibraryThing? MetaFilter just set one up and it's pretty solid-- it would be interesting to see if we could get a decent list of sports books just by looking for commonalities among Spofi members there (which the site does).

posted by yerfatma at 04:54 PM on May 08, 2007

Oooh. I like LibraryThing. Second the motion.

posted by NoMich at 07:13 PM on May 08, 2007

Created. What, exactly, do you do with it? Show how much smarter you are than everyone else. Duh. Are you new to the Internet? On the plus side, the commonality thing (where it shows you users similar to you) has already showed me some books I'd be interested in.

It would could be cool to link to the spofi fantasy leagues. Winners could hang their awards along the walls for all to see.

Please add anything you think is apropriate to the wiki, l_b_b. Another thing I think would be nice for the books section would be to organize the books by sport. That is my next task. Also, feel free to suggest articles. I would like people to create articles on their own, but I also am willing to get things started if people will fill in the blanks.

Images are going to have to wait until I have had some time to add the "upload photos" code. I *hope* to get that done soon, and will alert people here. However, you can also keep an eye open for that text in the left navigation.

posted by scully at 06:49 AM on May 09, 2007

Is there a way to see all the SpoFi pages or do you have to perform searches?

posted by bperk at 08:55 AM on May 09, 2007

I beefed up the Fantasy Sports page with confidence pools info and results. The previous wiki (SpoFiWiki.com?) had a few pages with fantasy league results. Is there an archive of it somewhere? I'm in favor of moving almost all info off the main page, and have the main page more as a top-level list of links. At this time, most pages are almost hidden. Who's with me?

posted by qbert72 at 09:03 AM on May 09, 2007

Correction: Look for "upload files" in the "toolbox" navigation below the search field. It is there now. That should allow people to upload photos (or trophies) to use in articles. However, it also means more diligence and responsibility. Please let me know if you see any suspicious photos.

qbert72: If I understand you, you want to turn the main page into a sort of site map or outline. If so, I am definitely with you. Feel free to work on that. I wasn't even familiar with SpoFiWiki, but I checked the Way back machine on archive.org and found that there is a snap shot from February 2005, which also includes some of worldcup2002's interviews. qbert72: If you were volunteering to look for usable material from the old wiki, that would be a good place to start. I'll poke around when I have a chance, but I have a busy week ahead of me and will be going out of town soon.

Like I said, it was a long time ago. Like so many of you astute cinemaphiles, I'd probably pick the classic and ethereal "Hustle and Flow" or the sharp and poignant, "Cheaper by the Dozen 2" as a my favorite.

posted by jerseygirl at 10:43 AM on May 09, 2007

If the interview thing ever gets reopened, I think the first order of business should be interviewing everyone who has already been interviewed. See if their five-year-plan is still on track three years later. Kind of like a Brady family reunion.

posted by The Crafty Sousepaw at 10:52 AM on May 09, 2007

Holy shit porting the interviews is going to be time consuming :) Took me 15 mins just to do the first one (StarFucker's) qbert72: Coming up with the outline/sitemap will be key to this project. If you (or anyone else reading) wants to do a mock up in a text file and send it to me I can lay it out on the main page and we can see what folks think.

posted by scully at 11:15 AM on May 09, 2007

Look, concentrate on the important stuff: where's my drunken Red Dawn soliloquy? It would probably be a lot easier to write a regex or six to run over the HTML versions and replace things, compared to porting 15 of those things. Alternatively, you could use a web editor (HomeSite does it) or something like this page to strip all the HTML and then you would just have to do the markup. And replace the links that got stripped.

posted by yerfatma at 11:57 AM on May 09, 2007

OK, here's a first draft at an outline, based on the current content: * About SportsFilter (most of what's currently on the home page) * Policy and Etiquette ** Guidelines ** Horses beaten to death * Members ** Wiki User List ** Interviews ** Chatrooms * Fantasy ** Leagues ** Pick'ems ** Confidence pools * Projects and offsprings ** Music swaps ** The book list ** SpoFi gear (merchandise) ** Century montage * About this wiki ** How to join ** How to contribute

posted by DrJohnEvans at 12:43 PM on May 09, 2007

DrJohnEvans: Thanks! Nice job, qbert72. I implemented your suggestions. There are some blank places where content needs to be fleshed out. This is primarily the Fantasy Sports section. yerfatma: I agree that there must be better ways, but I am not familiar with them. If you'd like to take on that section, just let me know so we aren't stepping on each others feet. I don't mind continuing to do it my slow way, but it may just take a while. The interviews have been MIA for a while now so I think they can go missing a while longer. worldcup2002: About how long has it been since the rest of the interviews went bye bye? I only searched the Way Back Machine for the spofiwiki.com URL. I *may* find more if I dig archive.org for sportsfilter.com/lockerroom.

I think under the "List of dead horses" part, we need to add: not guilty vs innocent/ the OJ story. I saw that Samsonov14 had an interview. posted by yerfatma at 07:30 PM on May 09, 2007

Yeah, that too. But, when I see a crazy commercial, I remember someone had a blog about commercials and I don't remember who that was. A lot of the wiki user pages have blogs which are easy to find out about now when there are only a handful of them, but will be difficult later.

It is looking to me as though the only way to get the members' page to display user names in an orderly way would be to not use the Category method and simply have people add a link to their user page on a regular article. I will get on that and see what happens.

I doubt Sammy's been deployed anywhere yet. First comes bootcamp, which (I think) is 10 - 12 weeks long in the Army. Then, depending on your MOS, you'll end up in some tech school for anywhere between 6 weeks to nearly a year. Just depends on how technical your job is. Infantry would be short, aircraft electronics technician will take a while. Chances are, Sammy's still on a training base somewhere in the United States, learning the joy of C-rations and bad haircuts, and taking test after test after test. Whereever you are, Sammy, good luck and Godspeed.

How would I change the Amazon URL to fit the formatting to our Wiki? My wiki user page has soooo many ways to contact me. Speaking of the Amazon affiliate code, someone (accidentally I assume) changed kickerofelves code to the spofi (naviseek) code. I left kickerofelves's code because they linked to their own blog in the discussion thread and had their own code. I thought it only fair.
