Ducks drop the "Mighty" from their name and change their uniforms: So...ok...does it help? The Lions started wearing black, but continued to suck. So why in the world does Anaheim think this might put them over the top? Or is this just what happens when you let your wife be co-owner of the team you just bought? Wonder if she'll redecorate the locker room too?

Previously. Im glad they finally got around to revealing the new logo. I must say, I'm kind of underwhelmed though. But hey, it looks like they are keeping Wild Wing. Oh, and Here are the new uniforms. Meh.

I'm all for them removing as much of the Disney taint as possible. They're almost a legitimate team now.

I wouldn't say that the Ducks suck. /Flames fan And I am all for dropping the Mighty from the name. Should never have even been part of the name. Stupid synergy.

Is it just me, or does it look like they stole the Penguins' color scheme?

posted by MrFrisby at 11:41 PM on June 22, 2006

Replace the D with an S and that's what I think of their new unis--they're mighty lame. I actually liked the older purple/green/gold/gray joints even though the duck head/mask did look cartoonish.

posted by curtangle at 11:49 PM on June 22, 2006

They don't look too happy standing there with those uniforms on. That has got to be a sign... My God, who designed them? The webbed-foot-letter-D in Ducks looks like something that my six year old boy would draw.

"I really love the new look and thank the Samuelis for giving me a chance to have input on the design," winger Teemu Selanne said. huh? Thanks Teemu. Way to go.

I'm glad they got rid of the Disney movie name. That was was simply embarassing. It's bad enough that the professional sports teams have to play games in ballparks named after orange juice and car insurance.

I knew that the new logo was going to be mostly stylized type because any logo including an illustration of a duck would be compared unfavorably with the Disney logo, which is a very strong mark. My verdict: Too much open space on the front, not enough on the back. Not enough accent color (orange); black and gold shades are too similar to neo-traditional Penguins unis (although the Pens may be a thing of the past any day now). All in all, it coulda been worse -- it might have been something that was done while someone was either sleep-deprived or stoned to the gills, like the red-gold-black skate Canucks monstrosity of the '80s, Phoenix's oh-so-artsy kachina-doll coyote, or the Columbus Blue Jackets' puzzling Vegas-sign mark. But I was hoping for something dynamic, like you often find in the junior leagues.

...and the mighty head of revving up the sale of team merchandise rears it's ugly head...personally, I can see fans scooping up the old logo gear; this new stuff is horrid...

posted by gak27 at 06:47 AM on June 23, 2006

I too was hoping for something a little apart from the norm - maybe some odd colours and a more dynamic (terrible soft fruity word) logo. This just looks like it's going to blend in with the landscape. I think more hockey teams should go ugly. Those old Canucks unis and LA Kings unis are so bad they're wicked. And if we can be okay with having Penguins, we can be okay with Ducks.

Anaheim Ducks is still the dumbest name in sports. A team called "Ducks" in a major sport will never achieve greatness. They need to just change the name completely and pretend the whole thing never happened. It was a dream.

So much for Oregon. My God, you don't know how close I came to adding a sentence that read, "And please don't anyone bring up the University of Oregon, because I'm mainly talking major pro sports." Oregon Ducks, along with their colors, are fairly ridiculous, too, but I can find my way to give college, amateur athletics a pass.

I think all the teams should just go back to old school. Screw this flashy crap. Ducks is a pretty gay name and you can tell his wifey had a hand in the design. Did they get a new arena chant also? "D-U-C-K-S.... quack, quack"

posted by yerfatma at 11:50 AM on June 23, 2006

There is more to the name "Ducks." The building they play in has always been called the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim and the Ducks play on the pond. All of the teams that have called the Pond home have had a Pond related name. The RHI Roller Hockey team was the Bullfrogs, Indoor soccer was the Splash and the Arena League football team was named the Piranhas. It may be a silly marketing ploy as except for the Hockey Ducks the other teams have folded but it is a big part of the reason they remain the Ducks. I'll have to get used to the new uni, I really liked the old color scheme--the new name will be easy.

posted by Termite at 12:01 PM on June 23, 2006

I seem to remember an AHL team called the Long Island Ducks back in the day. They moved or disbanded before the Islanders came into the NHL. So how about the "Anaheim Anseriforms"? It should cover about all variations of the common name. By the way, Termite, if there are ducks playing on the pond, you ought not to try skating on it, and if you can skate on it, you won't find too many ducks around.

posted by Howard_T at 12:45 PM on June 23, 2006

I don't mind the new uniforms. They could hardly be worse, after all. The old colours and logo and name were 100% a marketing ploy and were complete bullshit so far as I am concerned. The old colours were pure 1990s kitsch and should be lumped in with the brown and orange Padres uniforms from whenever. The alternate jerseys last year were ok. And dropping the 'mighty' is great. They are strong colours, simple. Maybe not classic, but win a couple of cups, and they look pretty good. You can imagine a player holding up the cup wearing one of those, at least.

Best Logo Ever Yes, it was. For the Highliner Fish company, that is. Ack! It's the peyote coyote! A criminally underrated logo, in my books. I generally like simple logos that kids can draw on their text books (like the Habs, or Bruins logos), but that logo was great mix of culture, style and message.

posted by grum@work at 03:35 PM on June 23, 2006

Exactly grum. I thought that logo and the trim around the jersey was perfect for a team in Arizona. While we are discussing logos, I want to know why this looks so similiar to this.

posted by MrFrisby at 05:30 PM on June 23, 2006

I personally liked the old logo- it was different from any other hockey team even if looked down upon by hardline hockey helmet heads. Besides, look at all the free advertising they got every time one of those Ducks movies played on ABC or the Disney channel.

Anaheim Ducks is still the dumbest name in sports. A team called "Ducks" in a major sport will never achieve greatness. American sports teams have overplayed the macho card with mascots to the point it sounds like they're overcompensating for something. For this reason, I like Ducks. But the gold stripe across the shirts looks like a sash they should cinch at the side with a big gold hoop.

Yeah! You're right. A major league team with a name that silly will never win jack. They ought to rename the team "Blue Jays."

The dumbest name in sports is the Utah Jazz. (I did read that there are some jazz clubs in Utah--but it doesn't have NEARLY the cache that it did in New Orleans. Utah and New Orleans should switch team names. Utah Hornets and New Orleans Jazz sound about right.) I liked the original 'Yotes logo but don't like the current one; and the Isles' fisherman logo should've been on boxes of fish sticks. Bring back one of the older Ducks logos!
