So long, Blacksburg.: Ron Mexico's little brother gets his walking papers from Virginia Tech after his Gator Bowl fiasco.

Yeah. This is sad. He deserved it, though. Too many bush-league plays and a serious discipline problem. Good on VT for doing the right thing, even if it meant kicking a talented marquee guy off the team. We'll be seeing him in the CFL shortly, I reckon.

posted by chicobangs at 04:29 PM on January 06, 2006

This could get a lot bigger, too, as there are rumors flying around Blacksburg that Virginia Tech Head Coach Frank Beamer knew about Vick's Dec. 17 arrest for driving on an expired or suspended license and kept it from the school administration.

Or maybe even arena league. He is a punk.

It is pretty shocking that he has been thrown off the team considering how talented he is. I guess it was the cumulative effect of his bad press. I doubt it will hurt his long term prospects much. He will just go to a 1-AA team, rack up tons of stats, say the right things, and still get drafted. I can't see anything happening to Beamer. They love him there. He pretty much put them on the map.

I'm glad a school is doing the right thing and not giving a free ride to someone who clearly feels a sense of entitlement because he's a good athlete. I think this is an occassion where the glare of media spotlight is a good thing. What did he do to get the unsportsmanlike call in the Gator Bowl? I have to admit the big VT-Louisville match-up had me reaching for the remote and searching for Seinfeld re-runs.

Texan, he basically stomped on the leg of a Louisville defender at the end of a play. It was complete horseshit and should have gotten him thrown out of the game at the time. It was so blatant, Vick didn't even try to act like it was an accident. The funny thing was, it just happened to be when one of the reporters found brother Michael in the stands. RM didn't say anything about it (and maybe he didn't see it), but the announcers were pretty upfront about the severity of it after the mini-interview ended.

That stomp was probably worth about 10 million in lost wages and endorsment deals..ouch that really hurts! No draft no signing bonus no Vick brothers memorabilia..dooh! Maybe a one-year deal for league minimum with a few incentives, maybe nothing. I wonder what his major was? ( hahaha )

I'm a VT alum and happy to see this shiftless dude get shifted. No amount of talent excuses his behavior, and they did the right thing.

God, PLEASE don't put us through more Vick hype regarding this clown possibly going to the NFL. We still haven't fully settled the Michael Vick argument with regards to whether or not he's a legit quarterback.

I'd like to see an end to the constant "financial analysis" of college sporting events I see on SpoFi. I'm not talking about serious analysis, just knee-jerk armchair-sports-agent reaction to on-the-field bungles. "Leinart lost X million, Bush lost XX million, Vick lost XX million!" File under: I don't care. If they're any good, they'll make it back. (And probably blow most of it in the long run anyway.)

We still haven't fully settled the Michael Vick argument with regards to whether or not he's a legit quarterback. Right now he's not. He's inconsistent and doesn't know how to lead a team. Oh, he runs well, but defenses know him now, and how to defend against his rushing ability. After that, he can't pass, fumbles a lot, and doesn't know how to stay in the pocket. Maybe in a few years, if he learns to pass the ball and limit his running, he might be a good quarterback. But if he keeps running against defenses, he won't last long enough to become a good quarterback. Right now he's overrated and reads his own press clippings and hype. Hopefully he'll morph into a solid QB. But he's not there yet.

The other Vick is a tough act to follow, that should be enough, but to hamstring my own career with some very immature decisions (off the field and on) . . . I don't know. Marcus' stock, which were already falling, has just plummetted. However, as with T.O., Terry Glenn, and other bad seeds who've paved the way for players to play despite embarrassing behavior, the NFL will find a way to suit this guy up. Now is the time for heavy-duty clauses which punish - and incentives which reward - particular behaviors. Seeing as these kids are coming into the league younger, less mature, and simply unable to live life on life's terms, somebody's gotta help 'em grow the f*%# up!!!

Sad Otter, Thanks for the video. I did not get to watch the game. I have seen alot of dirty stuff, but that is unbelievable. I praise the decision of VT. First because Marcus Vick is a punk and deserves to be behind bars, not taking up a scholarship spot that could go to an athlete who appreciates the opportunity. Second because this will show the younger kids that it doesn't matter who you are, you are not above the rules. Great job Beamer and VT. As for Vick, The Longest Yard is not real. They don't actually make movies about real prison quarterbacks.

posted by mcstan13 at 08:47 PM on January 06, 2006

Marcus Vick deserved what he got. What a jerk. There's no excuse for stomping on someone like that. What really perplexed me though was that the announcers on the game just overlooked it when it happened and didn't say much. It was also pretty ironic that they were doing an interview with Michael Vick when Marcus did it.

Punk? PrisonQB movies? Behind bars? I should say it was an accident just to piss some of you over reacting scared shitless sissies off. He got caught driving with a suspended license? Oh shit, give his black ass the chair. I also see that this leg stomp gets T.O. an honorable mention on this thread. Did the victim lose his leg or something? Is his career over? Some of you are acting like they had to sew this guys leg back on. Vick is going to play in the league. You dont even get fired from walmart if you get a ticket for driving on a suspended license. Bertuzzi crippled a guy and some of you would argue that his suspension was to long. Stop hating, you look foolish. think the "behind bars" mention was a reference to some of Mr. Vick's off-the-field transgressions... YOU DONT GO TO JAIL FOR DRIVING WITH A SUSPENDED LICENSE M. T.bertuzzi cripple man with blind side attack/end his career- 1 yr suspension from playing a game. Hmm?? I agree, Todd Bertuzzi should have gotten a lot more than a "one year suspension" (remember it was a few games because of the lockout) and probation. However, after that video link, I have lost all respect for Marcus Vick. Someone needs to start trying to teach that guy some maturity.

Marcus Vick is the same caliber idiot as Mike Tyson and Dennis Rodman. Hell, in 5 years or so it wouldn't surprise me a bit to hear that they were all living in the same refrigerator packing crate under an overpass in Detroit or some other shithole.

posted by Gibbyson at 08:07 AM on January 07, 2006

Marcus Vick's legal problems have all been minor, but they're stacking up -- driving without a license, reckless driving and marijuana possession, serving alcohol to minors. He still doesn't think he did anything wrong by intentionally trying to injure another athlete and lying about it, and will declare for the NFL, where he's just told 32 general managers he's a head case they'll have to babysit. "It's not a big deal," Vick told the Virginian-Pilot. "I'll just move on to the next level, baby."

This kid is a punk ass, just like his older brother. Like Michael, he will NEVER be a QB in the NFL. He simply doesnt have the talent or tools of the trade. This kid has a lot of growing up to do, both on and off the field. Until then, he will be just another "college athlete" (not pro caliber) who smells the big money in the big leagues, but will never touch it! Speaking of big brother Michael, the sooner the Falcons organization realizes Michael isnt a legit QB, nor will ever be one in the NFL, the sooner the team can move on and be contenders. As for anyone trying to play the race card on this issue.... GO F**K YOURSELF!

Just heard he declared for the draft. No surprise there. Here's a link to the announcement. Interesting to hear Kiper saying he lacks maturity (ya think!) but his passing mechcanics are better than Michaels. As if that's hard to do. Kiper went on to say he won't go the 1st day. I gotta believe there is a team out there willing to think they can handle this guy's attitude. He'll make his $ but not a mark in the NFL. He pulls that crap on the field in the NFL he is liable to end up with some broken bones. I don't put much credance in his QB ability but he sure looked good against Louisville. To Bad he couldn't let his play speak for itself.

He needs to generate an income like anyone else. Professional football is his best opportunity. First round draft picks historically get more money than the undrafted. Advertizers love gimmicks and promotional tie-ins.(ie Vick brothers cough drops), they hate controversy. Michael Vick would be crazy not to distance himself from his brother at least professionally. Most sports fans like statistical evidence. So "seriously" I figure about $10,000,000.00. I think that this is where the punishment fits the crime.
