Who could disagree with such an eminently sensible suggestion? Bravo DrJ.

Was watching the game with some mates. I tried the chat room thingy during the world cup and found I wasn't following the game properly so I stopped.

It's my busy time of year at work and another site which I moderate has taken off big time meaning that I have to spend a lot of time there when I'm not working. I'll try harder.

Squealy, here is the best description of Cisse! Ah yes, I remember that vaguely from the SpoFi campfire chats. My natural condition during World Cups is drunk so it's no real surprise I'd forgotten

What's the Cisse one about? I must have missed that.

Hi Folkways, glad to hear you're doing alright. Best wishes from Nottingham, merrie olde England. I'll also shout you a warm beer if you ever make it over to this neck of the woods. Robin Hood sends his regards too.

No need to apologise trox. I can only speak of what I've seen of the pitch on the telly - ie three playoff finals, an FA Cup final and an international friendly. The pitch didn't look the best and was breaking up quite a lot, but it is fairly newly-laid and hopefully will "bed in" properly given some time.

Squealy, even a few paragraphs would be appreciated, if only for your impressions of Wembley. I would do trox but it was salmacis who went to the game, I just watched it on the telly.

Writing a column seems quite daunting to me and maybe a bit overblown for something that might just be a couple of paragraphs.

I think Terry will probably serve his suspension in Chelski's Carling Cup game against Villa tomorrow night so no need to panic. Terrible FFL week for me. Let's not bother with an update this week.

The Chelsea game is a pre-season friendly and the QPR game is a competitive league game. I'd choose the latter especially with a big team like Leeds involved who normally have a big travelling support to add to the atmosphere. Btw, scalper translates as (ticket) tout in England.
posted by squealy at 03:28 AM on August 02, 2006
Probably should have been clearer there - Premium TV runs all the Premiership club websites and some of the lower league club sites, including QPR's.
posted by squealy at 12:59 PM on August 01, 2006
Chelsea v Celtic tickets will not go on general sale according to Chelsea's website. All go to season ticket holders and members. QPR v Leeds is a different matter: QPR v Leeds United Tuesday 8th August 2006 Kick Off 8:00pm Tickets are now on General Sale and available in all areas QPR ticket office is here. Alternatively Telephone Credit Card bookings can be made direct to the Box Office Monday - Friday 9:00am-5:00pm on 0870 112 1967 (£2.00 per transaction will apply). The prices are available here. A generic username/password that should work for all Premium TV sites is latest/latest.

Why not get a euro and an oz or asian too? Well this is exactly the issue I was hoping to imply. You see us Europeans live in a different timezone to most SpoFi users and I don't want to see some up to the minute post about which new granny Wayne Rooney has shagged having to wait for some colonial to approve it. Personally I'm agin the whole idea. But then us English never did take well to anything new. Thanks for the nomination YYM but I really don't think I could take on the responsibility of being the sole abitrator for all posts put forward in the European timezone. If for no other reasons than I'm mainly at work during the time I use SpoFi and have no real knowledge of US sports.

A two-step posting process? Do you mean the FPP would go into some kind of holding bay until someone got round to approving/editing it?

What was the cause of the problem? Too many posts about the World Cup caused SpoFi to self-destruct?

I think you just described your own experience of being knocked out rather than that of an "English bloke". My only basis for this opinion is being an English bloke who didn't share that experience. I agree about Italy v Germany though. A fabulous game of football.

YYM - a warm sense of belonging and the ability to see a transcript of the conversation before you entered the room as far as I can see.

Obviously I'm biased but Pete Davies' "All Played Out: Full Story of Italia '90" is my favourite football book.

I guess I could just stop posting Steven Wells links. That would probably help, as they are pure troll feed. Somewhat ironic maybe was that the gist of Swell's piece was that the US will soon be a soccer superpower. I wondered if that would pass people by amidst the inflammatory rhetoric. And it often did. Zoom! People will doubtless still be posting about the World Cup regularly though. And you can bet even the uncontentious threads will draw their fair share of flak. Doesn't bother me. I quite enjoy gingerly poking trolls with a stick. Though I do realise I should rise above it for the common good. Oh, Djibril Cisse has broken his leg in a friendly against China. I'm sure that'll cheer up the scouse wannabees amongst us.

bill, go to You Tube and search for Crouch, there's loads of videos. Over here in Merry Olde England we're all doing the Crouch. It's a bleeding honest-to-goodness phenomenom. From zero to hero. Come on Crouchy.

I was under the impression the winner of the toss had the option of, ball or diretion of play. Yes indeed, I think that's correct. However IMHO that's relatively unimportant compared to the initial direction of play in a fairly unstructured game like football where possession will normally change hands quickly and often.
posted by squealy at 07:34 AM on April 08, 2006
In the EPL and I'd imagine every other football league you get to wear your home shirt. Direction of play is decided by whichever captain wins the toss of a coin.

posted by squealy at 08:58 AM on February 09, 2006
Is this serious? If it is, the first two questions are very US-centric IMHO. Neither would be a question of "basic sports knowledge" to most Europeans. Even allowing for google-fu you run the risk of discouraging new users who might just think, oh well if it's that US-oriented it isn't worth the effort. FWIW I just did an office straw poll amongst the sports fans here and none of them had even the faintest idea what the first two answers were. Out of 5, one had never even heard of ESPN, and only 3 knew what MVP meant.

Nice one Starfucker. He's got a point though. I get the same problem all the bloody time. I reckon I only successfully get SpoFi to load 50% of the time. If that. I just assumed it was some anti-European thing.

All I know is that when the troll wins it makes the baby Jesus cry. Clearly from the comment history there's more than just jew-bashing, soccer-hating troll there though. Anyone ever has any success drawing that "line" between what is and isn't acceptable let me know, and I'll do you a little dance.

Not actually kicked but I got a virtual mauling when someone here tried to get SpoFi recognised on the Wikipedia. Why? Because they're a bunch of geek wankers. That's why. Oh, and I got accused of plagiarising myself, which was blatantly ludicrous, but tell that to the Wiki cyber-police or as I know them, arseholes. Bitter? Moi?
posted by squealy at 07:31 AM on February 28, 2005
I don't understand Wiki's, as the kicking I got from Wikipedia shows. I'm still smarting from that. It's put me off the whole concept really.
