Don't Be Frontin' Us: Attention new users -- you can't link to your own work on the front page. I've deleted three self-links in the last two days, and could've dug into the last week's archives to remove three more. There are four traits these self-promoting P.T. Barnums all seem to share: They post on the front page the first day they can, talk about themselves in the third person, use a throwaway e-mail account, and link to something so lame the author's mother wouldn't bookmark it.

and the odds of new users visiting the lockerroom to take a pointer are... rather low I imagine. But bravo for stomping out the flareups. there must have been more work in that regard in the last few months than there has been in some time, if ever.

My mother doesn't know how to bookmark... She uses favorites...

Can I post a link to my real side, the glorious solihull borough? (as opposed to the other side that I also support). We've just achieved relegation, and could do with some support.

Clammy, that has to be one of the most badly designed websites I've ever seen. And the Solihull site isn't much better. I'll get me coat.

btw, what's up with the long run-on posts on the FP? I see some of the culprits are the same self-linking posters (and they're gone now). But some of the remaining long posters might benefit from a short primer on the value of editing and "more inside".

The chap with the "my team beat your team in a baseball game" post was pretty good too.

and by the way, WTF is a wisp of regret? And why do we have so many of them today?

posted by lil_brown_bat at 08:34 AM on April 13, 2005

It's similar to a whisk of regret, which is used to scramble eggs as penance.

Yes, Homerism is an awful disease.

I think, at a time like this, we must take a deep breath and meditate on the lazy days of yore.

New registrations seems to have kicked up recently. I think I mostly notice new posters on the news-y topics...maybe SpoFi has climbed up the google ladder. Someone had a chart of the registrations over time a while back - it's probably worth a revisit. And I love that Dante Hall messageboard.

posted by mbd1 at 03:04 PM on April 14, 2005

Definitely love the Dante Hall messageboard as well. Reminds me of this link someone had posted a while back. Does professional athlete chat parody ever get old?

I'm pretty stupid, but if I see the words "Chris Sabo" and "weiners" together on a page...I'm gonna laugh...it can't be helped.

My suggestion is to unlock Reggie White' Ghost and let him run amuck like he was intended to do. It'll help if you hear the comments in the voice of Boxy from Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

Sportsfilter, the first 1964 users mdb1: I had noticed the surge in growth when we had the 1300th user. Seems like the growth has continued. I compiled the data the first go and dusted made a chart. The data scale is constant and I have collected finer data (every 50th user this time) and made the chart pretty. The mini surge around 450 would be the 2002 World Cup. The surge beyond 1200 is around the time of the hockey lockout and the MLB playoffs. That's a flickr image so I can annotate the image there with any notes that people might want to include.

gspm, the vertical lines really tell the story. There has definitely been a big jump. Yeah, we can all be idiots on occasion, but some of the new members are so spectacular they're impossible to ignore. They're impressive both in presentation (grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc.) and substance (racism, hostility, stupidity). I have no idea what can be done about it, but I feel sorry for the pantheon members that have to delete all the messes. Maybe if new members making good contributions were highlighted, it would set a better example? Part of the problem is that sports discussion is so god-awful almost everywhere else on the web - the bar is set so, so low.

I'm at 1245 (October 25, 2004), does that mean that I'm part of the problem, the newly arrived unwashed teeming masses, and should feel the shame?

posted by chris2sy at 04:46 PM on April 15, 2005

Absolutely. Everyone #724 and above should feel shame. :)

I have no idea what can be done about it, but I feel sorry for the pantheon members that have to delete all the messes. In the spirit of the upcoming Winter 'lympics, and particularly in the spirit of mocking any sport that isn't judged by timer or tape -- LIKE BASEBALL HA HA -- oh, sorry, I just hadda all-caps, it's rubbing off...anyway, dusted, whenever a newb lays an egg, I propose a polling of the judges for marks based on artistic merit (racism, hostility, stupidity, and sheer vitriol, etc.) and technical execution (grammar, spelling, punctuation, diction, etc.). It won't teach 'em the error of their ways, but it'll be fun. ...and I get to be the French judge.

And I get to French the French judge. The French judge is accepting bribes of money and good stuff. I'll need a testimonial before I decide if your stuff is that good.
