lbb, The song itself whether it be "Lift Ev'ry Voice" or "Another Saturday Night" by Sam Cook is not the point that I was making. The point is that for a song to be designated as "the black national anthem" is contrary to the doctrine of unity that Dr. King preached. Maybe I'll start playing the rap group Two Live Jews and their song, "Oy It's So Hummid" during the high holy days as my Jewish National anthem. Too many men and women of all races have died for this country's freedoms to be so devisive.

Howard's an idiot and it's his right to prove it. The American flag, Pledge and National Anthem should be respected but that's a personal choice. Many times I stood in the crease and sang along with "Oh Canada" yet luckily I'm not Canadian. Maybe Howard would have been happier if they had played "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing" which is considered by some to be the "Black National Anthem". that's one that I won't stand up for because I find it to be a sad comentary on everything that Dr. King preached and stood for. I'm a rare conservative that believes that burning the American flag in protest is the highest form of free political speech. The 1st admendment does give us freedom of speech but it was placed in the Bill of Rights to make sure political speech was protected. Just try yelling fire in a theater or "BOMB" at airport security. To address what some one brought up about blacks not being considered a complete person in the constitution, that had very little to do with slavery itself. That's there because the slave states didn't want to give the slaves any rights but they wanted them to count as full persons for the purpose of being able to count them when it came time to assigning the number of delegates that the slave states could send to the congress. The free states wouldn't go for that so you have the partial person clause. Yup, America's a bully and to that I say...bully. I'm proud to be an American and I don't mind standing at a football game or anywhere that they choose to play it.

This is a sad situation that I believe that will never be resolved. It's not like you can cut her open and count the rings. Cheating has and always will be a part of the Olympics and that too is a shame. But can you imagine how He feels if indeed she truly is 16? Innocent until proven guilty is my standard. Do I trust the Chinese...hell no. I say pursue it until all viable options have been exhausted and then live with the results of the investigation. Being a sore loser is not the way to go.

Baseball is a nineteenth-century pastoral game. Football is a twentieth-century technological struggle. Baseball is played on a diamond, in a park. The baseball park! Football is played on a GRIDIRON, in a STADIUM, sometimes called SOLDIER FIELD or WAR MEMORIAL STADIUM. Baseball begins in the spring, the season of new life. Football begins in the fall, when everything is dying. In football you wear a helmet In baseball you wear a cap. Football is concerned with downs. "What down is it? Baseball is concerned with ups. "Who's up? Are you up? I'm not up! He's up!" In football you recieve a penalty. In baseball you make an error. In football the specialist comes in to kick. In baseball the specialist comes in to relieve somebody. Football has hitting, clipping, spearing, piling on, personal fouls, late hitting, and unnecessary roughness. Baseball has the sacrifice. Football is played in any kind of weather: Rain, snow, sleet, hail, fog...can't see the game, don't know if there is a game going on; mud on the field...can't read the uniforms, can't read the yard markers, the struggle will continue! In baseball if it rains, we don't go out to play. "I can't go out! It's raining out!" Baseball has the seventh-inning stretch. Football has the two-minute warning Baseball has no time limit: "We don't know when it's gonna end!" Football is rigidly timed, and it will end "even if we have to go to sudden death." In baseball, during the game, in the stands, there's kind of a picnic feeling. Emotions may run high or low, but there's not that much unpleasantness. In football, during the game in the stands, you can be sure that at least twenty-seven times you were perfectly capable of taking the life of a fellow human being And finally, the objectives of the the two games are completely different: In football, the object is for the quarterback, otherwise known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his recievers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line. In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!" He made me really laugh.

That's a hell of a job the U.S.A. is doing bailing out Iraq's butt. Yes, yes they are. You need to actually do some research instead of listening to the mainstream media's constant drumming on any negative. Whether you want to admit it or not it is better than liffe under Saddam. Congratulations, get all warm and fuzzy when Becky Gammon stands up on that podium, should she and her teammates be skilled enough to get there. She's not giving up her American citizenship, she's just playing for Russia in the Olympics. She's obtained Russian citizenship so why would I get all warm and fuzzy for a Russian or the Russian team? I'm not Russian. The American team did not beat the Red Army team, they beat the Soviet National team. Red Army was a club team. As an aside, the U.S.A. beat Finland to win the gold medal. The U.S.S.R.(not Russia) may have been your enemy, but it certainly wasn't mine. Comparing the Soviet National team to the New York Yankees { Evil Empior's (sic) }, come on, you must admit that's a little extreme. You're right, they beat the Soviet National team. I don't recall saying anything about the gold medal game. That was almost anti-climatic to our victory over CCCP. Finally, I tend to think that if some one points an ICBM at my country they're an enemy. If she had an ancestoral tie to Russia I wouldn't have a problem. Many Americans have obtained duel citizenships to compete for Israel.

She's a witch, burn her, burn her!! What makes you think she's a witch? Well, she turned me into a newt! A newt? ... I got better. Burn her anyway! By the way LBB I enjoy watching the WNBA on the tube. There isn't a team that's close by or I'd be going to the games which has nothing to do at all with the topic at hand. She could play pro ball for Iran and I wouldn't give a damn but this is the Olympics. It is about nationalism and yes we're the mean old U.S.A. who bails everyone's butts out when they get in a jam. I get all warm and fuzzy when an American stands on top of that podium and gets a medal. And for those that need a little history lesson when our boys beat the Evil Empior's hockey team we were locked in the midst of the Cold War. Russia was our enemy but more so than that their Red Army team was for all intent and purpose a professional team so that gave us added enjoyment.
posted by budman13 at 01:25 PM on April 11, 2008
The nationalism in the Olympics is divisive and in a world that needs fewer defined lines between people, it would do everyone a world of good to see people of every nation competing together at the highest level. Kumbya my lord kumbya.....In the modern Olympics like it or not an athlete competes for his or her country. All of this meeting on a mountain top and singing about buying the world a Coke is bullshit. When the U.S. hockey team beat the CCCP at lake Placid it was as it should be, the Americans beating them. Nationalism is a good thing. She's taking a crap on America and she should be soundly boo'ed when she returns home....or wait a minute...this isn't her home anymore.

Does winning by cheating make some one a football genius or a genius at winning by cheating? It's one thing to lose to a better team but to lose to some one that cheated that's another deal. Also, this whole "well everyone else is doing it" is lame beyond words.

Scotty: We've got no power play Captain. We can't put the bisquit in the basket sir.
