Round 2 Pick 'Em Same point structure as last time: one for the winner, one extra for the series length if you get both right. Buffalo vs. New York Rangers New Jersey vs. Ottawa Detroit vs. San Jose Anaheim vs. Vancouver THE BONUS Pick the club who will have the best penalty kill in the second round. THE SUPER BONUS Specify the PK % of that club in the second round, rounded to the nearest integer. (i.e. New York kills off 30 out of 35 penalties against Buffalo = 85.7% which we round to 86%.) You don't have to get the first Bonus right to get this right.

Did Detroit come down en masse with pneumonia or something? I mean, I'm a Sharks fan living 20 minutes from the Tank but I am very surprised that each of the picks so far is for Los Tiburones given the Red Wings won the conference. (Note: I do think the Sharks will win the series.)

Detroit has performed poorly in the postseason as of late. Of course their recent playoff history is less futile then say, oh, I don't know, the Ottawa Senators. I just (uninformedly) think that the Sharks are a better team.

Rangers vs Sabres - Miller v Lundqvist is a push. Lundqvist is more of shut down guy, while Miller lets a few in until he needs to keep it out. Forward depth goes to the Sabres, though not by much, and I'm not sure if Ruff has an answer to Renney's Avery. Defensive depth is also a push, and might even go in favor of the Rangers mainly because I'm digging this Girardi kid. This is a tough one because I don't think the Rangers were pushed all that much in the first round, either by the players or the tactics. At the same time I don't think the Sabres are playing up to their potential. So what I'm saying is that is either going to be a very short or very long series. If the Sabres get the puck behind the Rangers' D too easily and often, it's going to be tough for Hank to keep the Rangers in it. I'd like to pick the Rangers as the dark horse upset spectacular, but I have to go with the Sabres in 7. Senators vs Devils - Home ice won't be enough for the Devils as the Senators just might be the best team in the East, which is comical since they've been dubbed exactly that for the past three or four seasons, except for this year. The regular season series favors the Devils 3 to 1, despite the fact New Jersey was out scored. I don't see this trend holding up, especially if Colin White remains sidelined. Tough to bet against Brodeur, but he has looked particularly human so far this year. Tip to Ottawa; fire the puck at Marty's feet, early and often and from everywhere. It worked for the Lightning until they stopped. Senators in 6. Canucks vs Ducks - Roberto, you finally got to the playoffs, and you even won a round. See you next year. There is no way Vancouver gets by Anaheim. Luongo is phenomenal, but even he can't stop what will sure to be relentless pressure. The Sedins will be neutralized by Pronger and Neidermayer leaving zero options for Vigneault. This should be over in 4, but I'll give one win to Vancouver courtesy a monumental game by Luongo. Ducks in 5. Sharks vs Wings - This should be dandy. The Wings, early to the golf course last year. The Sharks, earlier to the golf course than they should've been. These two teams want it bad. Head to Head gives a decided edge to San Jose, who out-scored the Wings 2:1 with the help of a humming powerplay. Chelios may find himself out classed in this series, taking dumb penalties after losing his faster mark. The extra rest for the Sharks won't help matters in the motor city. Sharks in 6. Best PK - Anaheim - % 91 p.s. DJE iz the shiznit

Nice breakdown, garf. 100% agreement, yo. I'd like to update my prediction to San Jose in 6. Forgot that they're the 5 seed. I was surprised to see that they have more wins than Detroit.

If it isn't a problem I'd like to throw in my picks despite missing the first round. Buffalo vs. New York: Sean Avery lays out Daniel Briere with a bone crushing, but legal hit. Buffalo proceeds to act like the Calgary Flames and throw cheap shots for the rest of the series while Lundqvist stops whatever shots make it his way. Rangers in six. Ottawa vs. New Jersey: Senators blow out New Jersey in the first game. An indignant Martin Brodeur reminds them that they are supposed to be notorious for losing in the playoffs. The Senators drop the next four games. Devils in five. San Jose vs. Detroit: Hasek continues to be an x factor for Detroit while San Jose comes to the cold reality that the Wings are much more talented than Nashville. I'm a homer and proud of it. Wings in six. Canucks vs. Ducks: Nothing much to say here except Ducks in five. Bonus: Ducks Super Bonus 82%

Let me start by saying I'm never picking the Predators to win anything again. They're worse than the Stars, for crying out loud. Let me follow up by saying I'm sick of the spotlight being on Sean Avery as the key player in the BUF-NYR series. Why can't we focus on the talent on the ice? And now the picks: BUF in 6 OTT in 6 That will make a nice, intense semi-final. DET in 7 ANA in 5 Best PK: Anaheim 93%

posted by qbert72 at 08:05 AM on April 25, 2007

just to clarify the super bonus, are we picking the % of the team we chose in the bonus or the % of the team with the best PK? You're picking the % of the team with the best PK. The Bonus and Super Bonus are technically independent of each other.

Did Detroit come down en masse with pneumonia or something? I mean, I'm a Sharks fan living 20 minutes from the Tank but I am very surprised that each of the picks so far is for Los Tiburones given the Red Wings won the conference. With the current format, the regular season standings are not as indicative of pure performance as they could be. Bob McCown did some calculations with a theoretical 4-3-2-1 point system, in which: 4 points - regulation win 3 points - overtime win 2 points - shootout win 1 point - overtime/shootout loss 0 points - regulation loss This places more value on a win obtained through traditional hockey means (i.e. scoring more hockey goals, not shootout goals, than the other team), which would seem to be more indicative of a team's actual in-game performance. One of the show's listeners crunched the numbers and figured out what the standings would be with this point system, and there were a couple of noticeable differences which may very well stand up to post-hoc analysis. The Thrashers dropped to 15th place in the Eastern Conference, while the Senators and the Sharks jumped to first place in their respective conferences. Interpret as you will!
