Hockey hockey hockey: Russia beat Kazahkstan in a nailbiter, Italy tied Germany to set off nationwide celebration, and to further mess with our rankings, Switzerland is leading Canada 1-0. And three more games coming up!

Italy's goalie was just interviewed by Bill Clement and Chicken Parm and he said that they were rather disappointed by the outcome. There wasn't a whole lot of celebrating that game in the lockerroom. Which is great, really. They expect to win and they won't be satisfied by a tie, especially when they had the game won.

Apparently, while I was making fun of Switzerland in my preview, I should have been writing several paragraphs on the glory that is Martin Gerber. That was both a goal and a fucking kick-ass save. It's not an elimination game, and it took Canada a period and fifteen minutes to even wake up. Can Martin Gerber hold on? (It's not like it's up to the Swiss team - this third will be all about Gerber.)

posted by WeedyMcSmokey at 10:21 AM on February 18, 2006

Chandler: [rubbing his temples] Oh, no no no no no.... Joey: [pats Chandler on the leg] That's good, just keep rubbing your head. That'll turn back time. Still, it's not like Canada doesn't NEED a wake-up call. In 2002, it was the first two games (losing to Sweden and struggling against Germany). The Swiss got lucky with the non-goal, and Canada seems to have woken up now, so the third period should be an interesting one. One last thing: I'm cheering for Canada to win the women's hockey team to win the gold medal, but part of me would be pleased to see another "Miracolo su Ghiaccio". In that same vein, I'd be upset if Canada lost this game, but it's not catastrophic and it would make things more interesting.

posted by skydivedad at 10:31 AM on February 18, 2006

NBC just showed an extreme close-up video of the puck in Gerber's glove. It looks as if the puck just barely crosses the line, but, and here's the rub, the camera is not directly above the goal line. It's a little in front, thus giving it more favorable angle. So, there's that little bit of additional info. However, sdm has it completely right: good teams should overcome that type of adversity.

Looks like Canada might be shooting low on Gerber to have him give up his patented huge rebounds. Could work, but they need to crash the net more. In fact, Canada just needs to start hustling more. I don't see any urgency here.

I don't buy the statement -- made several times on CBC today -- that this game is not "critical" to Canada. I suppose technically that's true, but ... they are now 2-1 and will have to finish up with FIN and CZE. They could pretty easily end up 2-3, tied with SUI but behind on the tiebreaker, fourth in their group. In other bad Canadian news: women's curling loss to Japan (!!), men's curling loss to Italy (!).

posted by Amateur at 11:03 AM on February 18, 2006

They blew. They looked lethargic the whole game. Slow and delayed to make a move, and in that delay, the Swiss kept up with them and got into the shooting lanes and the passing lanes and in front of them. Gerber or no, they deserved to lose that.

They could pretty easily end up 2-3, tied with SUI but behind on the tiebreaker, fourth in their group Very true. If this was 2002, I'd be halfway to insane at this point. However, I've seen the same Czech team look very poor as well, and I suspect that they are more demoralized than the Canucks are at this point (losing Hasek and Elias). I think Canada will be able to handle them. Of course, I thought Canada should have walked over Switzerland, so what the hell do I know...

I completely missed the CAN-SUI game, and only saw the end of the SVK-USA and CZH-FIN games. Let me say it again: Vokoun sucked huge eggs in that game. I'm very disappointed in this guy, and suddenly have a lot more respect for the Nashville Predators as a team. I'm kind of afraid of Switzerland now. They've showed they can beat anyone. Not a lot of individual talent outside of the net, but they seem to be playing as a team, and it's only three wins to the Gold medal. It's incredible how close international hockey has become in the last few years. As for the pool, hindsight tells us that we should all have bet higher on Slovakia, Finland and Switzerland. I'll be interested to know by the end of the tournament what would have been the best possible picks.

posted by chicobangs at 02:05 PM on February 20, 2006

With Canada on the powerplay, Gillian Apps is called for slashing after she takes a whack at Martin's glove as the Swedish netminder is covering the puck. That's what the CBC blog said. Sounds routine enough. I'm sure the two goals shook Martin up enough.

The CBC blog asks: Do they (and anyone else who wins an Olympic medal) sport them around everywhere they go for the duration of the Olympics? Is there a statute of limitations on this? I'm sure it's not written down anywhere, but I wonder what the acceptable time limit for wearing a medal is among the Olympic athlete community. I can answer that: about half an hour, I'd say, unless you are at a special function in your honour or are being interviewed on TV. Otherwise, you carry it in your pocket, or wear it well-hidden, or you are a wanker.

I'll watch the CAN-CZE game tomorrow to try and throw this unfortunate conincidence of its tracks. And man, was I disappointed in the two games I did watch. You know, with the hype of the Olympics some fans are so looking forward to the the Canadian team and seeing them play. And after all that wait this is what I got? Thanks for ruining my weekend. They've still got time to erase my memory though. Though I can't forget getting all excited to see the NHLers in the Olympics in 2002 and the tourney launched with a game (and loss) against Sweden.
