NFL Coach Buddy Ryan Dies: Buddy Ryan, the former NFL coach and coordinator who was as famous for being cantankerous as for building defenses, has died. He was 82. Ryan got his first coaching job with the New York Jets in 1968. As defensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears he created the 46 Defense that was key in the team's 1985 Super Bowl-winning season. He went on to coach the Philadelphia Eagles and Arizona Cardinals. "People ask all the time, 'Why didn't you guys win another Super Bowl?'" Bears player Steve McMichael said. I tried everything possible. It hurts me more than anyone, but it is evident that this is not for me. I want more than anyone to win a title with the national team, but unfortunately, it did not happen." Dustin Johnson Won U.S. Open Without Knowing What His Score Would Be: The U.S. Open was finished Sunday without leader Dustin Johnson knowing if he'd be penalized a stroke. After his ball moved as he was preparing to putt on the fifth hole, a rules official told him on the 12th he might be penalized a stroke -- but a decision wouldn't be made until after the round. "Upon reflection, we regret the distraction caused by our decision to wait until the end of the round to decide on the ruling," the USGA said. "This created unnecessary ambiguity for Dustin and the other players, as well as spectators on site, and those watching and listening on television and digital channels." Jordan Speith called the situation a joke on Twitter.

Even With Confession of Cheating, World’s Doping Watchdog Did Nothing: "WADA, the global regulator of doping in Olympic sports, did not begin an inquiry, even though a staff lawyer circulated the message to three top officials, calling the accusations “relatively precise,” including names and facts. Instead, the agency did something that seemed antithetical to its mission to protect clean athletes. It sent Ms. Pishchalnikova’s email to Russian sports officials — the very people who she said were running the doping program."

Brazil Knocked Out of Copa Centenario by Handball Goal: Brazil was eliminated in the Copa America Centenario in the group stage Sunday night in a 1-0 defeat by Peru. The only goal was a blatant handball that somehow the refs missed, despite halting play for 3 minutes and 23 seconds while they talked to each other. Peru's victory is the first over Brazil in 31 years. Replay showed Raul Ruidiaz swung an arm to bat the ball into the goal. The result means the U.S. will play Ecuador in the quarterfinals.
