The Ringer: Bill Simmons' spiritual successor to Grantland, is open for business.
I'm happy to see a few familiar names from Grantland in there. Hopefully they get Mark Titus back once college basketball starts up again.

This is good to see, but the decision to use Medium as the publishing platform is bothering me. For example, the "highlight" feature is annoying. When I'm reading an article my eyes pickup the highlight before my brain has reached that sentence, it completely breaks my concentration. I also want to come to my own conclusions about the content, highlighted text forces me to think about why its highlighted, which I don't appreciate.

Yeah I don't get using Medium for your platform at all. No matter what you do it feels like Medium and when Medium goes tits up I bet we hear a bunch of horror stories about how hard it is to move away. If you're going to half-ass it, why not use something like Wordpress which has a large ecosystem of open source and paid tools?

The Katie Baker story on Joe Thornton and Phil Kessel is very good, not least for following discussion of Thornton's "stroking his cock" comment with the immortal segue:
"Not to be outdone, Kessel, too, recently found himself at the center of a ridiculous subplot involving cylindrical meat."
