Canseco "juiced" to be back in baseball: Not going to happen but would love to see the Giants pick him up. Who's next, McGwire?

he needs to try another job

A waste. He needs cash. Same reason that "The Who" are going back on tour.

Jose Canseco is the Ron Jeremy of baseball. When both men were young, they were studs. Now that they're old, clowns. For that reason, I find it hard to dislike either one. I don't know why they keep going after the limelight, but in Canseco's case, I hope his lasts for more than 33 pitches.

Who's next, McGwire? Rafael Palmeiro apparently.

I guess if you're too dumb (Canseco), damaged (Strawberry), or arrogant (Rickey Henderson) to join the ranks of coaches after your career is over, the independent leagues are your only option.

I like the fact there are independent leagues that'll take on outcasts and oddballs, but I hope Canseco isn't holding on to hope he'll get back to the bigs. I'm surprised the league tests for 'roids. That seems like a big expense for a rinky-dink operation.

I'm surprised the league tests for 'roids. That seems like a big expense for a rinky-dink operation. I would guess it's a necessary expense, if they want to be taken seriously as a league. If they weren't testing while the affiliated leagues were, there would be reason for MLB clubs to wonder both why particular players chose to play in that league and why they may be doing so well and shy away from the league's players. Eventually, no player with MLB dreams would ever play there. On the issue of things being taken seriously: Canseco is a side-show. This is the lowest level of minor leagues, and for crying out loud, he's pitching. This is not an earnest effort to "make a comeback." This is an earnest effort to "make a paycheck" and get publicity. Canseco, the team, and the league all benefit from this circus act. Palmeiro: "I'm not going to say what was being used in the clubhouse; whatever happens in the clubhouse stays in the clubhouse..." ...unless reporting the possession by teammates of tainted B-12 in the clubhouse will get me back in the league. Raffy, please, in the name of dignity, shut up. I guess if you're too dumb (Canseco), damaged (Strawberry), or arrogant (Rickey Henderson) to join the ranks of coaches after your career is over, the independent leagues are your only option. I'm pretty sure Rickey Henderson has made enough money that he could retire and stare at himself in the mirror for the rest of his life, and live very comfortably. Yes, he has shown some arrogance, but playing minor league ball at his age after the level of achievement that he has attained at the highest level apparently isn't beneath him. A quote from last year: "I love playing this game and every spring training feels like the first." I believe that -- I believe Rickey loves playing baseball more than anything else. Maybe even more than Rickey.

How is this news worthy. Just like Ricky in the CFL. I dont care if he has 14 yards on two carries in an Argonauts loss. I dont care if Canseco can hit an undeveloped 20 year old. This is not news worthy. All bullshit aside, who gives a damn.

Loads of people want to know what Ricky is doing in the CFL and what Canseco is doing in baseball. I think is is natural to want to know what is happening now to people who are/were sports famous. BTW, Sporst Illustrated publishes an issue each year "Where are they now" -- I enjoy that issue very much but you may want to pass on that one.

good point, termite. i concur

How is this news worthy. A best-selling author just signed with a minor league baseball team. How is that NOT news worthy?

I enjoy the "Where are they now" but I feel this is different. Canseco is a schmuck, period end of story, and Ricky is a waste of God given talent. These two just piss me off. I would give my middle nut to have Ricky's talent. I am from Austin and I love Ricky. I dont think he's NEWS worthy. I check his stats. I just think they have both lost their right to be in main stream media. A headline on EVERY sports feed I have is ridiculous

I dont care if Canseco can hit an undeveloped 20 year old. Two questions: 1. With what? 2. Gender of said 20 year-old.

Jose Canseco is the Ron Jeremy of baseball. The difference is, Ron can still perform.

posted by dbt302 at 11:21 AM on June 30, 2006

Now that's funny.

posted by THX-1138 at 11:54 AM on June 30, 2006

Actually, the difference is that Ron's performance-enahncing drugs are legal.

He lost respect of all ballplayers because of his high and mighty attitude against steroid usage pointing out who and when {which was great, but also calling the kettle black}. I give this about a month. This story will most likely go longer than his return.

The difference is, Ron can still perform. Yeah, but nobody wants to see that, either.

posted by psmealey at 12:45 PM on June 30, 2006

And Jose's a dual-tool guy. He's hitting and pitching for this team. I'd pay to see that. About a nickel, but I'd pay it.

posted by diastematic at 12:58 PM on June 30, 2006

Does anybody know if Jose is playsing because he's broke or just wants to play?

... or arrogant (Rickey Henderson)... WHOA WHOA WHOA WHOA WHOA. Just pay Rickey.

I'll wait to give my money to Canseco when he's reduced to a stand at the local fair where I get to drill him in the ribs, three throws for a buck. Canseco pitching is nothing but a sideshow. And I really hope Palmiero just stays home.
