Prince Records Fight Song for Minnesota Vikings: His purple majesty Prince, after attending last weekend's narrow victory by the Minnesota Vikings over the Dallas Cowboys, has released "Purple and Gold," a new fight song for the team. Sample lyric: "r history -- that's y we must b/4ever strong as the wind that blows the Vikings' horn." Hear the full song.
Its no Jay-Z "Empire state of mind."
He sang that before one of the Yankee games last year. Hope Prince does not do the same.
Bet Jared Allen could make a good song.

I like it, but I love Prince.

This song is perfect for when the Minnesota Vikings cross the stage and accept their degrees. Today is the first day of the rest of their season. As a fight song, not so much.

No team song will ever surpass Charley Pride's Dallas Cowboys Pride. I used to own this as a .45.

You are really dating yourself, rcade. That song is just funny now.
I think Prince's song is more a tribute or anthem, than a fight song. You must have shouting to be a fight song.

Bill Simmons has goofily argued that this song kills the mojo that the Vikes gained from Favre's "Pants on the Ground." Funny stuff.

Prince is really an awesome musician who has a lot of respect for old school soul. Really a very talented man. That having been said I think that the Viking's horn isn't the only thing getting blown.

As a Texan, I'll bet you don't even have to register that.

Sorry, artist formerly known as unspeakableundecipherable symbol, the original, when sung by the Vikings fans in full drunkeness, is much better.

Wait a sec, wasn't "When Doves Cry" already the Vikings fight song?

That is one stiff-ass ugly piece of music. Sounds like a cardboard theme song for a PBS kids show.
If the authorities had used this tune as part of the pre-assault sensory overload strategy at the Branch Davidian compound, the standoff would have been over with in a few hours and no one would have died. Even fervent zealots can only take so much bad sound before losing their resolve.
I will say this: it is hard to lay the notes down properly with a piece of music taken at that meter, tempo and feel, so my hat's off to whoever the players and singers were on that recording. If they can nail that, they can nail anything.
My advice: replace the word "Vikings" with the word "Tigers" and sell it to LSU for $3.75 as a tribute to Gary Crowton's magical offense.

In the name of the Purple and Gold, I must say that is awful.
For what it's worth, I have met the artist formerly known as a symbol a couple of times, very nice guy. Generous and very 'real" in how he interacts with people.

It sounds like a song you'd hear walking into a traveling carnival... with killer clowns.
But Prince is cool. And I will open-mouth kiss anyone who says otherwise.

I love me some Prince, but there has yet to be a decent song written about a specific sports team - excepting musicals, because Damn Yankees is awesome.

The late Steve Grossman wrote a song about the Cubs that many people are fond of.
He was probably at a later stage of his illness when he made that video, but he did a good job regardless. Renditions that he recorded earlier when he had more strength and stamina were delivered in a more raucous, powerful manner.
Edit: make that two songs - I forgot about "Go Cubs Go", which is a shameful omission.

Not written about a sports team, but ... "Brass Bonanza" is the greatest piece of music ever played in any arena anywhere.

Prince is cool. But he was even cooler in 1983, which is when this song should have been recorded, played, and then destroyed. I'm waiting for Morris Day to come out with a song to blow the doors off this one, which will then motivate Prince to write something actually worth listening to.

I'm not even a Bruins fan, but Time To Go by the Dropkick Murphys freaking rocks. I can't remember what year of EAsports (it's in the game) NHL game it was on, but I've been a fan of the band ever since.

It sounds like the national anthem of an impoverished third-world socialist dictatorship. Fight song? More like the thing you sing over many beers after your team has been crushed.
