I dropped one comment on the initial thread some months back and that's about all I could stomach. That said, I think every one of these threads belongs on Spofi. Without the power granted to Paterno by sports there's no way this would have been allowed to continue (unless Paterno had power granted to him by religion I suppose).

No. I can't imagine many 11 year olds read this site. Not our core demographic.

I pitched up through college ball and still play in summer amateur leagues. The only time we ever really worried about it was in college. Usually the catcher and I would decide on the first, second, or third sign before the game or whenever a runner got to second. If we thought the other team was on to us we'd switch it up inning to inning. One season we used the first sign after a fastball sign(2-1-3=change, 1-1-3=fastball) and another season we would flash signs that meant nothing and the catcher would adjust gear to determine the pitch(mask was fastball, chest protector slider, etc.).
I don't know how different it is in the pro ball though. Now I'm watching the sox/rays game trying to figure out what the guy is going to throw.

Brewers/Bucks/Packers* - Geography, I like the teams I live by because that's who everyone is talking about and sports fandom is more fun when other people are excited with you.
Twins/T-wolves - I went to school in the Twin Cities and watched alot of their games and became a fan. These allegiences are fading since all the players I watched and loved(KG, Ortiz, Hunter, Santana) are all gone now. I never could figure out how to like the Vikings though.
Broncos - Elway.
My allegiances seem softer than most sports fans I know. I don't live and die with a team anymore. I feel a little sheepish about it sometimes, like I should care more, but I don't.
* My Packer fandom went into hibernation around the time of Superbowl XXXII.

Tim McMahon of the Dallas Morning News recalls the Nowitzki v. Pierce draft debate from a decade ago. That was a great article. Tractor Traylor, nice move Bucks. I had no idea who Dirk was but I knew that Traylor was not who I wanted the Bucks to take. I think I was hoping for Pierce or -cough- Michael Dickerson.

Judging by what I got in return, I suspect that in two cases last time, my CDs are being used as drink coasters (you know who you are) Yeah ok, it's not getting a lot of burn on the ipod but I just listened through again and I found myself humming along on alot of the songs. I liked the Paul Kelly and Hunters and Collectors tunes the best.

It does matter why you wanted to know. "Can you link to such instances because I don't believe any exist" is alot different than, "Can you link to such instances because I want to know what dampened your spirits". Sorry, I really didn't know and the former would have been a spirit dampening rebuttal.

Goog[deleted]ling Awesome Deadspin, while at times spectacularly amusing, has become home to an incredible amount of assholes. I am getting a little surprised at the amount of overt racism and anti-gay drivel that is spewed there. It used to be piecemeal, but someone opened the floodgates recently. Agreed. It's been downhill since they opened the Deadspin Hall of Fame, not sure if that had anything to do with it.

"Sweep the leg" would probably be funny 13 or 14 times before it got old. Mine was a lefty pitcher with a screw loose. He threw the only no-hitter I've ever witnessed and didn't even know it until the last out was recorded.

Speaking of mortal combat, I once had a guy on my baseball team that would yell "Finish Him!" when our pitchers got a batter down 0-2 and the occasional "Fatality" on a strikeout. It was funny until the 13th time I heard it.

I'm with YYM. I went back through Smithee's comments a bit. A discussion in June and then you have to go back to February for anything more. Is that obsessive? Not to mention that he has only posted about Wie this one time. I don't see hate in any of Smithee's comments on Wie. His big issue it seems to me is that Wie gets too much attention from the media. If your reading hatred of Wie in his comments I'm not seeing it(at least in the June comments).

I can live with that I guess, though I think the wording of the post could have been overlooked. Is, "Wie axe grinding" the same as, "hatchet sharpening"?

I beleive the link added something new in that Wie's peers don't seem to appreciate her joining PGA tournaments and that in itself is interesting to me. I wouldn't have minded a conversation on that particular facet of the story. Weedy started down that path but everyone was too busy piling on smithee. My point being, I think the link was fine but I agree to deleting the thread because it had obviousely got out of hand.

In my pre-Spofi days I could see myself making a, "soccer blows" crack just for fun, after I was here for a couple months I realized that sort of sport bashing wasn't welcome around here anyway. Then I started reading alot of the soccer threads and my interest has skyrocketed in soccer, now I'm pretty pumped about world cup. My high school didn't even have soccer and when I got to college I largely ignored it, now that I'm getting more exposure to it I'm intrigued. So, what I'm trying to say is have some patience with the soccer trolls. If my first soccer thread I ever read would have devolved into a, "our futbol is better than your football" shitfest, I probably would developed a soccer grudge.
