Can anyone tell me how come Dennis Green wasn't in the running? He seems like a lock for a situation like this. Still, Dennis Erickson? Weird.

I wrote it after the first kick. The second kick warranted a: Holy. Freaking. Crap. Mike Sherman thing, hats off for picking a fight with Sapp Gimme a break. When the ball changes hands, the offense is now the defense. If you're a quarterback, you're going to get nailed - much less an offensive lineman. Sapp's move was totally legal, and its a sissy move for a coach to bitch out an opposing player - especially in the manner Sherman did it.

Dear Ballcoach, I know you're happy. That was a great win. I lost my voice during the game. I'm sure you threw out a wrinkle or two with all that grimacing - hazard of the job and all. Look, I understand you like to throw the ball. Your sense of disappointment oozes right down from the Direct TV satellite and into my house. But we don't have the guys for it. Not the quarterback, not the wide receivers. But we have one of the best running backs in the league. He ran for three touchdowns on Sunday. I'm asking you this. Don't abandon the run. You have to beat Dallas. It has been nine games since the Redskins beat the Cowboys - Emmitt Smith's shoes often turn red from the way he runs all over the Skins. If you beat Dallas, you will be crowned King of D.C. We might even allow you to launch a missile or two at Bobby Bowden (as long as you save the big one for Jerry Jones). Do this for me, and then you can throw the ball to your heart's content. I beg of you. Happy Turkey Day, owillis

Yeah, and let me guess ... Marty Shottenheimer is a lousy coach and the Chargers will go nowhere with him. Afterall, that is the reason the Skins sucked last year. ;) Actually, Marty is a good coach. But he is an abysmal GM, which is why Snyder fired him. Don't let the facts get in the way.

Actually, picking up a pricey free agent like Bledsoe would be a total Dan Snyder move, but he hitched his wagon (as I have) to the Ballcoach. Jack Kent Cooke's son did a terrible job running the team (SEVEN years of Norv Turner? Make it stop!).

Tice should trade Moss for whatever he can get. Minnesota made a mistake by hiring him right away instead of looking at the other coaches around, but I wouldn't blame their collapse on him so much as a terrible defense and a selfish, lazy WR. The Rams are 0-4 because Mike Martz has an inflated sense of ego. Give Marshall the damn ball.

I don't think much has changed lately to make this more or less viable. I do think that some coaches can be ridiculously cautious, which can result in a very boring game. For instance, when Schottenheimer coached the Redskins last year I learned how boring even a win could be. The 'Skins were up in the fourth quarter and the guy next to me said "Be cool if we throw another touchdown". I replied "don't hold your breath". True to form, Schottenheimer - ran, ran, ran, ran the ball ragged until time ran out. He also had the annoying habit of taking a knee going into halftime. HALFTIME. For God's sake if you're at the 50, just chuck it up in the end zone and see what can happen, at least pretend like you want to win the damn thing. I guarantee that if the 'Skins go 8-8 under Spurrier it'l be a hell of a lot more entertaiing than Marty's 8-8. One coach who gambles quite succesfully is Martz, though with his personnel you can gamble quite well.

tieguuy: I certainly wouldn't pay $85 to see the Dolphins, but I would for the 'Skins. I know, I'm a sucker (aka The Danny's Bitch). When I lived in South Florida, I always got the feeling of people jumping on the bandwagon - Dolphins playoff, Heat playoff, Marlins World Series - and then off when they crash and burn. As opposed to LA where interest in the Lakers was nil until they won the championship and it died right after. I'm just more respectful of fans of teams like the Red Sox, Tampa Bay Bucs, AZ Cardinals who stick through thick and thin.

"Sports journalism", as it is practiced today, is the biggest oxymoron. That said - I don't know why Tiger has to become the spokesperson for the opressed simply because he's black. I also think if a private club wants to exclude someone based on race or sex, that's their perogative - they just shouldn't expect things like tax breaks, etc. from the government.

The Skins come before all else because everything else sucks hard. Be honest :) Well, it isn't like the Skins haven't sucked since about '91 (aka the Norv era) but they still get way more attention than say the Caps or Wizards. Of course, I could tell you a good portion of the 'Skins roster but I couldn't name one Caps player. And I know Michael Jordan plays for the Wizards and Cal Ripken used to play for the O's... :) But yes, I've been here in Beantown about 7 months and I can tell the interest and love of the Sox is deep and genuine, and I can certainly join them in hatred of the Yankees.

It will be an early test of Spurrier whether the whole "Florida allegiance" angle has been overplayed. Does he go with the QB from the prior regime who may be more talented, or with one of "his boys" from Florida? I've resigned myself to the fact that the 'Skins will never have a Culpepper type, but instead will have okay guys that have one good year (Doug Williams, Mark Rypien). With the defense they have, we may just need someone to handoff to Davis. :)

I would love for there to be a baseball team in DC (Cal's gone so there is no reason to cheer for the O's anymore). But DC is strongly a one-sport town. Sure, Michael gets some pub and the Caps win something once in a while. Terps and Hoyas are nice to follow. But everyone has an opinion on who should be QB-ing for the Burgundy & Gold. But hey, if Montreal doesn't want them, we'll take 'em (no way I'm sitting in the heat for a July game though).
