Is Favre indestructible?:
Favre may be hurt (it's only a sprain), but it brings up his incredible streak of starting 164 strait games. Michael Wilbon calls it "Ripkenesque" and writes that it's "maybe even more impressive than that, to take the beating he's taken without ever missing a start in all that time."
I still think that this streak is the all-time "Iron Man" streak in sports: Glenn Hall played 502 consecutive games as a goalie in the NHL, most of it without a mask. Shooting pucks. At your face. For 502 games in a row. Yikes.

Favre's record is indeed admirable, but also a touch greedy. I always got a little angry at him for not sitting out some games. He has a tendency to injure his throwing hand, refuse to sit out, and then fumble or throw intercepted ducks repeatedly. Favre is a great quarterback that sometimes forgets that football is a team game.

Glenn Hall played 502 consecutive games as a goalie in the NHL, most of it without a mask. And threw up before every game (much like Bill Russell). I'm just in this thread to point out I initially read the second sentence as "Rypienesque." Not such a huge complement.

And I stared directly at "complement" on preview. That's funny too.

But Favre rarely sitting out for parts of games only adds to his mystique. He's so stubborn and loves playing so much, he never wants to be off the field.

"My name is Michael Wilbon, I'm a columnist for the Post - but I'll never let you forget that I'm from Chicago and would never write a good word about a local team" I'm just a bit bitter. I like him, just not all the time.

I think its definitely more impressive. Football is a destructive game for which the human body is inadequately designed. 164 straight games is amazing.
