Well, remember that FIA gifted Massa 7 points (6 at Spa, the other 1 in his incident with Bourdais), so Hamilton would've wrapped up the championship in China with his win there.

On a related note, Canada won gold for the first time later that same day, thanks to the take-out heard around the world, yet you don't see any Canuck screaming GO CANADA!! on the front page. Weird. Well that's because they're *Canadians*, not to mention that isn't it pretty much a disappointment if the Canadians get anything less than the gold in curling? But man that triple takeout in the gold medal game by the Canadians was a thing of beauty.

Well, maybe not, chicobangs. As I understand it, at most (if not all) schools, the athletic department is a separate entity with it's own budget that comes from donations, ticket sales, TV revenue and such. Especially at UT, with its popular football program, it's probably earning more than enough money for the department to stay in the black and not need any additional money from the school itself to fund scholarships and other expenses.

I don't think Danica needs to be moving over just because another woman won a race in a support race. If she had won in the Champ Car Series that would be a different story. Until she wins in the premier series, it doesn't mean much. Danica Patrick: 0 wins in 2 seasons of Toyota Atlantics Katherine Legge: 2 wins in less than 1 season of Toyota Atlantics

Basically I'm just cautioning that she might be a solid racer who picks up a win here and there, but she might not be the female auto racing Tiger Woods as some are hoping.

And volfire, both law enforcement and the infantry have physical standards that eliminate people who can't hack it. There are men and women competing for both and if they're physically incapable of doing the job, they don't get it. There is no special treatment for women in these cases; how can you argue, therefore, that women do a worse job in both? Sorry to get off topic, but I thought that there were different standards for male and female officers and military personnel. I distinctly remember that the requirements for things such as number of situps or pushups in the military were different based on gender.

Perhaps because it was slimy to tape phone conversations with a teenager w/o his permission, or to continually harass a teenager with phone calls? Or that Illinois was cleared of the allegation. Or it might be because Illinois fans felt like the NCAA was very harsh in its penalties for the very minor violations they did uncover (what kind of penalties would Duke or Notre Dame have gotten for the same violations?) and felt that the penalties were payback for the university questioning the NCAA and the allegations. Illinois fans also feel like that Bruce Pearl took down a nice and decent man like Lou Henson and forced him into early retirement with his unfounded allegations.

I wonder if Team USA's problems this year will start to appear for other international teams as the NBA gets more and more international. If the other basketball federations aren't careful, it's possible that in 4 or 8 years many of them will do the same thing as Team USA and throw together a group of players merely because they're in the NBA without regard to team chemistry and the specific needs of a team.

OK, so they might be covering college gymnastics or track and field meets, but they could draw on that experience. It's not like they could be much worse than NBC. it's times like these that i wish i lived closer to our northern neighbors. Damn. You all that say Ford is the frontrunner to be the first black President don't know that Obama has a primetime speaking slot at this year's dem national convention, it's his coming out party. Ford does not have the resume that Obama has, and Obama is the strongest public speaker the Dems have other then Slick Willie. Maybe so, but based on what I know, Ford is much more of a moderate, is from the south, and is also very charismatic, all essential qualities of a Presidential candidate. Plus, do you really think someone with a name like Barak Obama (which is to say, doesn't sound "American") really has a serious chance of winning a national election in the near future?

Ditka is the sacraficial lamb, the GOP in Illinois is a god awful mess. Well, if Ditka runs, I think the Illinois GOP would actually try to win the thing. IMHO, only him and possibly Jim Edgar have any chance of winning the race for GOP entering at such a late stage, simply due to name recognition. Obama is the Dem running for Senate in Illinois, he is well funded, well liked, and is the best prospect the Dems have to be the first black President. I think Harold Ford, Jr. would have something to say about that.

I don't see the emphasis on fundamentals that you guys see. In fact, I think the phrase "good fundamentals" have somehow become codeword for unathletic slow players (see it being applied to Princeton and other predominantly-white men's teams and now being applied to women's basketball).

They're also going back to ground effects underneath the car (which was what CART/ChampCar used for their chassis) to lessen the dependence on the wings for downforce. instead of the flat bottomed cars they were racing in Indycars from the founding of the IRL up to this season. That should also decrease the tendency for cars to get airborne, especially if their wings get damaged.
It's such a shame. We were one race away from leaving these 8 year old cars for good. :(
