Yahoo Fantasy Baseball League 2005: Registration is now open. (Who cares if Spring Training hasn't really started?) Reserve your spot, nominate a commissioner and vote for a draft date.

Is this the one we do for our Spofi league? How do we make sure it's jsut us guys/girls in on it?

posted by WeedyMcSmokey at 02:08 PM on February 19, 2005

I'm in. I don't care who is commish. If no one wants it, I'll do it. Draft date ideally would be any weekend morning (say after 11 am EST) or any evening (after 8 pm EST).

Yes, the Spofi league, weedy. In the past there have been a few friends or relatives of Spofites in the league. If there's demand for all 20 spots, the commissioner can just email the league password to all the participants. I'd also like a weekend draft, early evening. Weekend mornings are my second choice.

Here are the default Yahoo settings. We'll definitely change to 20 teams, and we might consider limiting the number of bench players to make the waiver wire a bit more interesting. Limiting the rosters has worked out pretty well in the basketball league, but I don't think it will work in baseball beyond shortening the bench. Maybe 3 bench players instead of 5? Or what about eliminating bench players all together?

I'm in. Draft time on a Saturday morning would be best for me. I'm working till ten at night on weekdays now so evenings kill me unless it's after 10:30pm est.

I can draft anytime outside of weekdays during standard working hours. On the rosters: You definitely need bench players, 3 would work. Another possible roster solution is to lower the maximum innings and carry less pitchers. The most radical change possible would be to combine and limit positions (ie. 1B/3B, 2B/SS, OF, OF, Util). I've never played that way but it might work. Just ideas...

posted by YukonGold at 07:36 AM on February 21, 2005

dusted, did you ignore my "I'm in"?

posted by jbou at 10:44 AM on February 21, 2005

No, you're #5 on the original list (from jerseygirl's thread from January).

posted by dusted at 10:56 AM on February 21, 2005

ah, I missed that.

posted by jbou at 12:24 PM on February 21, 2005

I'd love to join again this year, but March is pretty much a write-off for me, so I don't think I'd be able to participate in a draft.

posted by grum@work at 03:03 PM on February 21, 2005

grum, does that mean you've changed your mind and aren't playing this season? If you do want to play, there's always the Yahoo auto-draft, but you'll probably want to re-rank at least the top few rounds.

posted by dusted at 04:36 PM on February 21, 2005

Oh shoot...forgot I already opted in before. Yah, take me out. I just won't have time this spring to build a list for Yahoo. Sorry.

posted by grum@work at 11:03 PM on February 21, 2005

I understand... reordering the draft list is no small task. Hey worldcup, tell your Yahoo buddies to fix that, OK? So two spots open now.

posted by dusted at 11:31 PM on February 21, 2005

Save a spot for me... I'm helping keep the cellar warm in our basketball league right now.

posted by thatweirdguy2 at 12:10 AM on February 22, 2005

So who's going to be the commissioner? Jerseygirl has volunteered, and I can also do it, or maybe help her post updates. Anyone else want to throw their hat in?

posted by dusted at 12:29 AM on February 23, 2005

Goddam would be a good commissioner. (If interested, of course.)

posted by dusted at 12:32 AM on February 23, 2005

Whomever we decide on for commish, we need to book a draft time soon...

posted by jerseygirl at 08:31 AM on February 23, 2005

dusted, being as that this is my first baseball fantasy league and i don't have a clue as to what i'm doing i don't think that's such a good idea.

posted by goddam at 08:32 AM on February 23, 2005

Oh, I thought you did it last year. Never mind.

Pick a Sunday! Pick a Sunday! Mmmmm..... Sundae....

posted by WeedyMcSmokey at 03:28 PM on February 23, 2005

We've got a place called Cold Stone Creamery... they might be a chain. Anyway, it's like a sundae with toppings mixed in. I get coffee ice cream with roasted almonds, sometimes with a brownie thrown in for good measure. I think they're like 1000 calories each, but OH MY GOD are they good! Like... orgasmic good... yeah. Sorry, where was I? Why don't you be comish and make a league, jerseygirl? I don't see anyone clamoring to do the job.

posted by dusted at 12:21 AM on February 24, 2005

dusted, they are a big chain, almost out of nowhere in the last few years, with the aim of being the Starbucks of ice cream.

posted by billsaysthis at 01:00 AM on February 24, 2005

someone book a draft time on a Saturday morning or late night please.

posted by jbou at 05:38 AM on February 24, 2005

will set up the league and let you guys know the details no later than tomorrow. will try to be accomodating with the draft times. Seems like we're all good for a Saturday or sometime after 8/9pm on a weeknight? Any objections?

posted by jerseygirl at 08:01 AM on February 24, 2005

JG - if you don't have time I can set up the league during my lunch or tonight. Certainly willing to help, I should have spoke up sooner.

posted by YukonGold at 08:47 AM on February 24, 2005

I prefer weeknights around 9EST. Early enough for us easterners and late enough for you westerners.

posted by jasonspaceman at 08:52 AM on February 24, 2005

I can do it, Yukon. Just have to do it when I get home tonight from work. No biggie. Thanks for the help though, I'll give you a shout if I need some assistance :) Keep the date/time draft suggestions coming.

Looks good. Can we use three bench players instead of five?

posted by dusted at 05:11 PM on February 24, 2005

posted by goddam at 05:16 PM on February 24, 2005

(just about) everyone wants to do three bench players, instead of 5? if so, it's done. :)

posted by jerseygirl at 05:44 PM on February 24, 2005

Awesome. What now? It's my first time. Do we create our teams on Yahoo! and affiliate them with the 117213 League?

posted by DrJohnEvans at 01:15 AM on February 25, 2005

yeah you gotta go through the create a team process and when you have the option of creating a new league or joining a custom league you join one already made (it'd be a private league, can't recall how the wording it). with the league number and password you can access a spot in the league. your team is not fully created until the draft.

posted by WeedyMcSmokey at 01:33 PM on March 01, 2005

There's three or four spots open, so you don't have to give up your spot if you don't want to, Weedy. You can always pre-rank and do an auto-draft.

Okay, the Rick James All-Stars are in the house! Now, where do I sign Steve Howe and Keith Hernandez?

posted by wfrazerjr at 07:52 AM on March 02, 2005

I know I'm late but some food for thought on 3 bench players: I would say stay with five. With baseball's pitchers schedules, off days, and especially the non-DL injuries, bench spots are pretty important to fill those daily changing roster holes. The bench is what gives value to the light hitting utility infielder who is qualed at three positions in a roto league. In a 20 team league the waiver wire probably isn't going to be an issue either way, as anything with two legs and a pulse will be picked up already. I would also question the need for more waiver wire activity in a league. More trading I am all for but the waiver wire, meh. As always YMMV.

posted by pivo at 01:46 PM on March 02, 2005

Ummm ... why aren't you all saying how the Rick James All-Stars are clearly in charge this season after that draft? Where is the trash talk?!?

posted by wfrazerjr at 04:01 PM on March 07, 2005

Wow, my team sure looked a lot better as I was drafting them than they do now. Anyone need 3B? I have some to spare.

posted by trox at 09:07 AM on March 08, 2005

Sure, I'll take three or four.
