Carolina Skunks New York: The Carolina Panthers shut out the New York Giants 23-0 in a first-round NFC playoff game. NFC East quarterbacks Eli Manning and Washington's Mark Brunell have combined for 17-of-33 passing for 161 yards, no touchdowns and four interceptions, a quarterback rating of 25.76.
One thing the commentator mentioned that surprised me is that Archie Manning not only never made the playoffs--okay, the Saints were beyond bad in those days--but he never even played on a team with a winning record. Today was a learning experience for Eli, hopefully he got good notes.

I'm sure it wasn't much of a game for everybody else, but us Panther fans loved every second of it. Deshaun Foster sure knows how to exploit defenses that have given up on the game. His only other 100+ rushing days this season have come against Atlanta teams that pretty much gave up by the second quarter.

I didn't realize it was that bad for Archie. The closest he came was an 8-8 record in 1979.

If you Carolina fans have any cheesehead friends, I'm sure they will allow you to borrow our rivalry song, "The Bears Still Suck", for this week. The Panthers looked good today. Look forward to the defensive battle next week, so good luck Carolina. The Packer nation will definately be pulling for you since we're not use to sitting the postseason out. Just remember whatever happens, the Bears still suck.

Hey Chicago, The Packer fans get a glimpse at how it feels to be a Bears fan this season - loose twice to your rivals and no playoffs. One trip to the postseason in 12 years for you guys...guess you have low standards for your team. It sucks and its better to be on your side, but those 12 years we have been there. Too bad you guys dont have an offense to go with the good D. Grossman isnt the answer. Good luck but the Bears still suck. See you back in another 12.

Lets face it, neither manning is a big game QB. You can say payton has passing td records but thats it. So the truth is, neither is a true QB and never will be. You could say mike Vick has rushing records, that doesnt make him a good QB as some of you have pointed out. I wouldnt want none of the mannings QB'ing my team in the big game, all they do is show off for a few plays, get to the line of scrimmage do a bunch of BS fancy dancing around like they are planning an attack on Iraq, or directing a Baptist Church choir, then hand the ball off or go deep. Give me a healthy D. Mcnabb over P manning anyday in a big playoff game. You put Mcnabb on the colts with those receivers and you have a superbowl dynasty in the making. I think they are over rated because they dont run the ball well or make good decisions when the big game is on the line. Elway, Young, Fran Tarkenton*, Doug Williams all ran the ball well in big games. When the pressure was on they made the right decisions. Some of you may argue that P.Manning has this record or that record, but that doesnt make him a Champion. As a matter of fact, in a big game, P. Manning folds faster then a poker player holding 7/2 off suit. If he wants to impress people, he should set some records in the superbowl like Doug Williams did. Until then, he's average at best. Both of them.

So the truth is, neither is a true QB and never will be. So all those passing records means Peyton is a...running back? Linebacker? Strong safety? Doug Williams all ran the ball well in big games. Doug Williams started 5 games in the regular season for Washington in 1987 (his SuperBowl year). His total rushing stats: 7 attempts, 9 yards, 1 TD. He started in 3 games in the playoffs that year. His total rushing stats for those playoffs: 8 attempts, 4 yards, 0 TD. His grand total playoff rushing stats: 16 attempts, 32 yards, 0 TD in 7 games. So please inform me how Williams "ran the ball well in big games".

When is the last time the quarterback was the difference in a Superbowl anyways. Good teams that are united from the front office on down are what usually comes out on top. I mean 3 rings for Tom Brady?? Hes part of the factors, but he's not the reason the Patriots win.

Is it just me or does it seem that even in victory the Panthers are a mindnumbingly boring team to watch? As a Carolina fan, I have endured the passes to the flats over and over, and the endless running plays to the sidelines. They have been Conservative to the point that I didnt care if they won or lost, just glad to see the game end. Seems to me all you got to do to shut Carolina down is defend the flat, and let the middle of the field go. They arent going to throw there or run there either.

You are saying the Bears still suck when even our own rookie quarterback still had less interceptions than your untouchable beloved Mr. Brett Favre, I'll tell you what though I hope Brett comes back for another season so we can just keep pounding him to the floor. I'm sorry buddy but you need to look in the mirror and ask yourself "who sucks now?" Shoutout to all the Bears Fans who will be watching our team in Detroit while the cheeseheads keep insisting Brett is still the answer....poor cheeseheads. Just offering you some more work grum. Obviously adding Doug williams name there was a mistake by me. He indeed wasnt a running QB. I only meant to add his name when it came to the "pressure of making the right decisions" portion of that comment. I noticed that was your 1st post here. Any thoughts on the topic? Or just disecting me again? And i wont mention that you didnt offer the stats of the other QB's i mentioned. Just an oversight on your part right? You should have offered Williams passing stats from the superbowl that year. Then we could refer to this thread and compare Mannings stats from this years superbowl, provided he makes it. You had an opinion on the thread itself too, right? God knows we dont need to ruin another thread by pointing out other posters errors. Your post would have been fine had you just made mention of the link or the topic. I only offered Williams awsome performance in comparrison to mannings big game performances. He certainly isnt the topic here.

It's time most knucklehead fans woke up to Brady (10-0 in the playoffs with 3 rings working on 4)whose stature will grow after the fact -- much like putting a Presidential admnistration into historical perspective after his years in office. Please explaim to me how Brady finished second to P.Manning last year in the MVP voting because "Manning had the better numbers even though Brady had the wins," and this year, Brady finishes behind Manning because "Manning had the wins, even though Brady had the better numbers." Huh? And by the way, it's Bill BeliCHICK, not Bill BeliCHECK.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the big black cats' upcoming trip to Chicago. The Bears don't suck on defense, and they've already beaten the Panthers once during the regular season, so hopefully Fox and Co. will be better prepared the second time around. I'll agree they don't have the flashiest, most exciting offense around, but isn't a boring win better than a showy loss?

I dont think i can blame Eli for everything, he was under constint pressure, and that defense SUCKED, i cant remember when the last time i saw so many missed tackles, they were not into this game, and not prepared for Carolinas intensity. Next week against the Bears should be a great defensive game, I still like Carolina and there expierence. I do believe Eli will come into his own, hes still young and learning, he got a lesson yesterday for sure. I remember watching Archie, I never thought he was that good anyway. I do wish the Giants well next year, they just werent good enough, or ready for it this year

Just a couple of quick comments here. E. Manning isn't a rookie this year as a few stated above. Just because he plays like a rookie doesn't mean he is one. I made the comment at the start of the season that "My Giants are the only team I know of who would sign a QB because his brother is good". I received a lot of comments that I was all wet - that Eli had some super talent. His best talent seems to be hiding all his talent. I love my Giants, but they do suck.

I remember a young Peyton getting the wild card, having a better record than the Jets, and still playing in the Meadowlands. They had "it" handed to them. Just like the Jags, Bengals, and Giants. Well, I guess I could have also mentioned that Fran Tarkenton only had 6 rushes for 31 yards in 5 playoff games, but I didn't want you to get the impression that I was picking on you. Oops. Any thoughts on the topic? Hmm. Giants stunk and I picked them to win the game. That's pretty much it. That's why I didn't post anything before. It wouldn't have contributed much to the discussion (other than noise). However, when someone goes off on a flawed rant about quarterbacks, I tend to look at the evidence presented. In this case, half of your examples were misrepresenting your point (running QBs in big games). So, to make sure no one else is incorrectly swayed by the false evidence, I pointed out the flaw. In the end, I think of Peyton Manning as an excellent quarterback. Sure he's only won 3 of 8 games in the post-season, but he's handled himself pretty well: 284 pass attempts 171 completions (60%) 2171 yards 14 TD 8 Int 10 rushes 32 yards 2 TD

Three interceptions, plus a lost fumble and another interception that were called back. Zero yards rushing on one attempt. Four sacks, at least a couple from holding the ball too long and not scrambling. Absolutely no time management at the end of a very winnable game.

If the Colts go out this season after a brutal display by Peyton, then this type of performance just may be the way it's meant to be for the family. And, no, this is not to say all the interceptions today were totally Eli's fault. One team was ready, prepared to play, and the other definitely was not.
