Will Pete leave USC for the NFL?: And will he be dumb enough to take a job at a place like Detroit? Why not? Maybe GM and Head Coach...somewhere?

Considering how it worked out for Steve Spurrier, Lou Holtz, and Bobby Ross -- from middling to downright embarrassing -- I hope he doesn't get a bad case of "victory disease."

Pete Carroll works for an outstanding organization, and you're asking him to move to a terrible, relatively small market NFL team like Detroit or Green Bay. Especially if USC wins it, he will be able to demand a salary bigger than Notre Dame's Charlie Weis (which will be in excess of 3 million dollars next year with all the bonuses) . Question: when was the last time Carroll had to coach a bad team? 4 years ago? 5 years ago? So he's a celebrity pulling down 3 mil a year in Orange County with great endorsement potential (which he would risk with a few mediocre NFL seasons). Bad enough that the transition to the NFL is pretty difficult, but why even bother when you have a good thing going? See Coach Krzyzewski - he was offered the Lakers job and lots of money, but he's secure in Duke, treated like a god, and has plenty of endorsement deals and none of the egos like a Kobe or a Terrell Owens. See also: Bobby Knight at IU (pre-firing), Roy Williams at UNC and Kansas, Bobby Bowden at FSU, and so on.... For every coach that has done well moving from college to the pros (for example Jim O'Brien from U of Dayton to the Boston Celtics), there are four or five that did not. If anything, we may see more people moving from the NFL to the NCAA if more schools are willing to pay Weis and Carroll level salaries. On the short list: Ohio State, Miami, Michigan. Nebraska and Notre Dame have done it (with slightly mixed results) but if you can go from an Assistant Coach or Co-ordinator in the NFL to a head coaching slot at a top school, especially an alma mater, for a few million a year and all the attendant benefits of coaching at a major program... needless to say I think this trend will continue. Hmm, moving from LA to Green Bay or Detroit... brrr?

Pete, as much as I would love to see your talents at a place like the St. Louis Rams, if you leave So. Cal. you are dumber than you look. You are a winner at USC, they pay you a huge salary, and everybody loves you. Stay where you are.

I really dont care where he winds up. Its all about money anyway.

USC currently operates as THE pro football franchise in Southern California, the best football organization in the State of California, and as such the spoils go to Pete Carroll. He is King of LA right now. No reason to exit voluntarily, Pete. As for NFL feelers, this should be sign to the Trojan faithful that Carroll has a fair-market value and that he is aware of what that value is. USC should prepare a compensation package that exceeds Carroll's fair-market value in proportion to the amount that three consecutive national championship games exceeded the University's expectations from the outset. Clearly, Carroll has outperformed any expectation that Trojans have held for a very long time. Not to mention the fact that SC can't let the Irish spend more on a football coach.

Don't forget that Carroll was a not very successful pro coach before USC. He may feel like Dennis Erickson did, that he needs to remove that 'not very' from his CV. I hope not, he's been a terrific coach at my alma mater, but people do the darndest things.

I could easily see Matt Millen hiring (and massively overpaying for) Carroll, because it's the kind of thing he does: Look for solutions from prominent individuals instead of actually build a team. Quick -- somebody register FirePeteCarroll.com!

I think this is the same situation that Steve Spurrier was in, only this time, we know that Carroll is a better college coach than an NFL coach. Some people are just better in the college game, and also I cant see USC letting him go that easily. Not only is he winning games, but he is a great recruiter.

I think Pete Carroll is just looking for a Weis-like extension.

If he wants a challenge, try winning it all next year when he loses the best RB college ball has seen in awhile and a top 3 QB. That'll be a challenge.

Option is there. I don't think he will but he could. Option there, I say he stays.

Pete Carroll could stay at USC until he falls over if he wants. And I suspect that's exactly what will wind up doing. He's just striking while the iron is white-hot to get Charlie Weis type money, which he clearly deserves. I would be shocked if any other result came of this.

If he wants a challenge, try winning it all next year when he loses the best RB college ball has seen in awhile and a top 3 QB. That'll be a challenge. Are you forgetting that Carson Palmer won the Heisman three years ago and people said the same thing, since Leinart was a total unknown? Second, Bush hasn't announced for the NFL yet but even if he doesn't come back Lendale White surely will. Third, as The Don said, "he is a great recruiter" and surely has planned for this as well as anyone can. If his team wins the BCS for the third consecutive season, plus a 4th AP title, do you think USC alums will scream at a fall off next year? Seriously.
posted by billsaysthis at 03:52 PM on December 12, 2005
USC has a hotshot freshman QB who's been riding the pine and taking notes all year already. Lendale White is coming back. They aren't rebuilding, they're reloading. They're not going 2-9 next year or anything. Carroll, in case it still needed to be said and apparently it does, is no fool. USC's ready for next year even if by some circumstance he doesn't come back. If Pete Carroll coaches anywhere other than Pasadena next year, then I'll eat my hat.

see coach krzyzewski - he was offered the lakers job and lots of money Minor nitpick but I dont think that "offer" ever happened- it was more a media invention. Coach K is monumentally unqualified to coach in the NBA and I think even Jerry Buss knows that. tangentially related, but I think the the NFL just got a draft lottery yesterday. I mean, did anyone see that kick by the guy for the Texans? I usually dont believe in these conspiracy theories but did he miss on purpose or WHAT??

No matter who coaches, USC will be a contender again. I think LenDale White is sometimes overlooked a little bit because of the Reggie Bush hype. I personally think that if White was the featured back he could be one of the best in the nation. I may be mistaken, but isnt Booty a decent running QB?

chico -- Carroll will coach in Pasadena next year, but only in the UCLA game or if USC makes the Rose Bowl again. billy - I believe USC is in the running for a 2nd consecutive BCS title and a 3rd consecutive AP title.

holden - my name is not billy, thanks for remembering that. However, I believe you are correct about this being potentially the second straight BCS/3rd AP title.

billsaysthis -- in all my time on SpoFi, I have always read your name as "billysaythis" -- just as I always read wfrazerjr's name as "wfrazierjr" until very recently. Funny how we often see what we want to see or can misread something for so long.

I may be mistaken, but isnt Booty a decent running QB? Now's there's a gameworn jersey I want for my collection. Carroll stays put, but USC doesn't win another national championship until ... oh, 2007.

I would just like to note that Bobby Ross won a National Championship in college and went to the Super Bowl in the NFL, that is far from a "middling" performance in the pros.

i wouldn't expect usc to have a huge dropoff in success. they may not win it again next year, but they still have a lot of guys returning on defense, plus dwayne jarrett and lendale. QB will definitely be a question mark, but who's ready to overtake them in the pac-10? no one i can think of and as such, they'll be a bcs bowl team until someone else catches up.

Masked -- I forgot about that Super Bowl appearance; I was thinking more of aggregate Ws and Ls. Okay, so Ross isn't a good example. (Unless you're Detroit Lions fan.)

Will Pete leave USC for the NFL? If Pete feels he has something to prove in the NFL then yes, he will leave, but if Pete is happy where he is, and has no burning desire for redemption, then no, he will not go anywhere. If I was him I'd be very happy coaching at USC, and being treated like a king in so cal.
