Want to Close the Locker Room?: The daily Huddle removes some of the need for a Locker Room. Anyone in favor of moving the Fantasy category to the front page, closing the Locker Room and letting all other inside-Spofi subjects be handled in the Huddle?

I wouldn't say no.

I like the locker room. It's like the stupid kids don't know about it.

But I roll with the punches.

I dunno. I kind of like having the not-absolutely-necessarily-about-today-sports-news option in here. Wonder if closing the Locker Room would dilute the front page at all.

I definitely have a sentimental attachment to it, but it sure hasn't been getting much use. My only concern would be missing a fantasy league sign up that's buried in one of the huddle posts, but I suppose a dedicated front page post for fantasy league and pick 'ems would take care of that. So I'll go with the flow.

Rather than a dedicated fantasy post, I thought Fantasy Sports could be added as a front-page category.

I thought Fantasy Sports could be added as a front-page category.

I really like that idea.

Closing the locker room? I guess now that we have a daily link dump...I don't know, I still think that the tiniest bit of extra effort needed to go to the locker room keeps it different from anything that goes on the front page.

posted by tselson at 09:39 PM on May 18, 2010

Personally, I vote to keep it. Otherwise, the CD Swap threads either go to the front page or die altogether. And where would threads like this or this or this go?

posted by MeatSaber at 11:02 PM on May 18, 2010

Vote for keep.

posted by justgary at 11:13 PM on May 18, 2010

Maybe I'm just being sentimental, but I vote to keep.

posted by MrFrisby at 03:40 AM on May 19, 2010

I, too, say that we should keep MrFrisby. Sure, he's rabid as hell, but he's mostly a lovable scamp. It would be a shame to put him down.

posted by NoMich at 06:03 AM on May 19, 2010

I vote for keep as well.

posted by boredom_08 at 07:21 AM on May 19, 2010

Looks like there's more support for moving the Fantasy category to the front page than closing the Locker Room. Do any of the keep votes want to move Fantasy?

posted by rcade at 07:55 AM on May 19, 2010

Maybe put something on the front page alerting people to the fantasy game in the Locker Room?

Can't we upgrade the sidelines?

posted by owlhouse at 09:38 AM on May 19, 2010

Didn't we used to have the sidelines?

Yep, I've been lazy. The sideline should be more active.

posted by justgary at 09:39 AM on May 19, 2010

Vote for keep. I don't think they serve the same purpose. I'm ok with Frisby staying under his old name. I'm still not used to the new one.

posted by yerfatma at 10:06 AM on May 19, 2010

Is it possible for any posts in the locker room that are posted in the 'Fantasy' category to be automatically put on the sidebar of the front page? I mean by the site, not by rcade's divine intervention...

posted by MeatSaber at 12:00 PM on May 19, 2010

Would it be proper to discuss points of order in the huddle then -- e.g., moderation policy, use of the eff word, that kind of thing? If so, I vote for punting the locker room since it is so easy for stuff to languish here.

Also, yes to enhanced use of "sidelines"

posted by rumple at 12:28 PM on May 19, 2010

I vote to keep the Locker Room, and to merely keep MrFrisby under strict observation, albeit with powerful tranquilizers on hand at all times.

posted by The_Black_Hand at 12:28 PM on May 19, 2010

Keep the Locker Room.

The fantasy stuff should stay in here because the subject turnover is slower, and it's easier to track. A sidebar that points to any/all fantasy subjects in Locker Room would be a better idea.

posted by grum@work at 12:58 PM on May 19, 2010

I vote to keep the locker room. Fantasy sports, cd swaps, and other locker room posts would get lost on the front page quicker. Plus, this place has always been a nice haven from the unwashed masses.

Count me in as voting for:

1. Keeping the Locker Room 2. Keeping Fantasy Leagues in the Locker Room 3. Keeping the Sidelines up to speed

I do like the huddle, but it's still nice to be able to slip into the locker room for a little more casual stuff like fantasy (that, as has been said, doesn't turnover as fast as the FPPs) and moderation issues, etc.

I second what grum said.

Non-existent Celebratory/Re-cap Locker Room Thread that should have been posted two weeks ago wrote: Congratulations, holden, on the back-to-back Fantasy EPL table-topping performances!!!!!
Get rid of the f*%$@g Locker Room, you ingrates who would not recognize greatness if it bit you in the ass. If the Locker Room exists only to highlight my Costanzas and not to celebrate my world-beating performances, I want nothing to do with it.

Kidding aside (although, as my mother always says after I "jokingly" call her a know-nothing mouth-breather, there is truth in all sarcasm), I cast my lot with those who wish to retain the Locker Room in current form. Basically, put me down for the Spitztengle view.

I'm all for the Locker Room. Well, at least most of me is for the Locker Room. Some of me is for world peace, free beer at baseball games, institution of National Love an Umpire Day, and a Pulitzer Prize for Sports Filter.

What's the locker room?

My vote is to keep it, unless it's too much of a headache for those responsible. In that case, I'm sure I could live without it.

posted by tahoemoj at 09:17 PM on May 19, 2010

Keep it .

Or, what grum and Spitztengle said.

posted by tommybiden at 10:12 PM on May 19, 2010

Well, I don't wish to retain the locker room in its current form, because its current form is lame. Used to be stuff happened here; now all you hear is crickets except when a fantasy league revs up. Take it back to its old form and you'll get my vote.

posted by lil_brown_bat at 11:00 PM on May 19, 2010

I hear what lbb is putting down, but most of the stuff that that used to happen here was "hey, we got a problem here!!1!!!!!1!!!". We'd discuss the problem then go off on tangents. I don't know if it's because of the upgrades after the last server switch or that some of the old clique is MIA (I miss you chico, samsonov, qbert, mkn, SummersEve, BPP, Wingnut...) but yeah, it isn't what it used to be. But the lockerroom is still a more laid back place to goof off without the animosity that sports talk by it's nature brings, and therefore helps to create a closer community where we can all just get along and agree to disagree.

I am in favor of closing the Locker Room to girl "reporters."

posted by holden at 02:53 PM on May 20, 2010

Last night I took a look at every couple of years of the locker room, and there really isn't much of a difference in topics, just a difference in quantity. Instead of 8 fantasy sports threads, we now have 4, or 2.

In the past it's been used for pony request, site problems, cd swaps, and miscellaneous other questions that still happen, just not as much. Unless we're going months without activity I still think its beneficial to have it.

posted by justgary at 04:00 PM on May 20, 2010

Just to be clear, I thought adding fantasy sports as a category was a good idea.

I still think our fantasy games should be posted and tracked in the locker room.

Also, I can post naked in the locker room and snap a towel off of the huddle's ass.

posted by tselson at 11:14 PM on May 20, 2010

Just to be clear, I'm a two-time fantasy sports champion. Nothing else. Just that.

But whatever you guys want is okay with me.

That huddle guy gets up way early. EVERY DAY.

posted by rumple at 01:11 AM on May 21, 2010

I think it's a double edged sword. The biggest turnout I had in a confidence pool was last year during the upgrade when a glitch or something posted it on the front page. That's cool for a confidence pool or pick'em but in the limited GM full season leagues, that could mess things up for those of us who have been in them for consecutive years. Granted, it seems that lately we've had trouble filling a full league, at least in hockey and football, but I think just updating the sidelines would be the happy medium for that.

posted by MrFrisby at 03:40 AM on May 21, 2010

Would it be possible to add an option for people to post to the sidelines? It'd need to be reviewed and approved before actually showing up. That might help the sidelines stay more up to date.

posted by apoch at 06:19 AM on May 21, 2010

Maybe I'm going to change my mind and say keep the locker room, since apparently we're not allowed to use anything like naughty words on the front page, only were probably not allowed to use them here either because OMGNOES THE CHILDREN!!!11!!!111!!!!

posted by lil_brown_bat at 08:25 AM on May 24, 2010

What are you talking about? Since that mom quit in a huff, the regulars went back to salty language.

I like the Locker Room. As much as I love the site, I don't have as much time as I'd like to keep up with main site, but I make sure I at least read all of the LR posts. Here is where the community lives.

I'm also embarrassed to say that I don't understand the huddle, so I don't participate. it seems like it is a date specific post about the days topics, whereas the LR is a place to discuss the community aspects of SpoFi.
