NHL Confidence Pool Update: round 2 is over. Edmonton and Anaheim are the Cinderella teams, and DrJohnEvans and NoMich are in a close fight for the lead. What were your best/worst picks?

Worst: 2 points for Edmonton, 15 for Dallas. Best: 12 points for Carolina, 1 point for TB. No matter what happens though, I still blew it. The best picks at the bottom end would have been: 12) San Jose 11-10) NJ, Ottawa 9) Colorado 8) Calgary 7-5) TB, Dallas, Nashville 4-2) Detroit, Montreal, Philadelphia 1) NY Rangers OK, so maybe 3 pts for Montreal was my best.

Correction: 7-5) Detroit, Montreal, Philadelphia 4-2) TB, Dallas, Nashville The highest possible score would be 746 pts.

I picked Ottawa for 16 and Anaheim for 1. Ugh. Only reason I'm still in the middle of the pack was my Carolina at 15 pick.

I am equal to the Spofi collective. At first I was all like, "Hey, I'm smarter than half of you! Awesome!" And then I was like, "Man, I can't believe I'm dumber than half of you. Not awesome!" It's still up in the air. Go Buffalo!

woo! I am in Costanza territory!

Oh man, I can't believe that I gave Edmonton only 2 points. Otherwise, I have 16 to Carolina, 14 to Buffalo and 13 to Anaheim. If I would've given Edmonton at least 9, I would be walking away with this thing. Damn you all to hell, Edmonton!!

Gspm this is my best shot for the Costanza and I won't let you take it from me! As for my best and worst picks, basically every pick of mine sucked. Damn you Edmonton.

Best pick: Rangers 1 point Worst pick: Everything else. Carolina and Buffalo. Sheesh. Time to get hip to the lights out way.

Hey, you guys told me Detroit was good. And I foolishly believed you. From now on, it's a blindfold and a dart board. Like chico and goddam are using.

Well, I'm in 3rd place, but I can't possibly make up enough ground to catch the leaders (as they will get more points than me from every team except Edmonton).

Holy heck, I'm leading both pools? I gotta follow the "pick what you don't want to happen" strategy more often.

Nice work Doc. The feat is especially impressive given the unpredictable nature of this post season.

Best? Hurricanes (13) Worst? Edmonton (1) Whatever. I shuck sho bad. I can't friggin' win anything -- no gold, silver, or bronze. Shit, I can't even "win" the friggin' Costanza! If anybody needs me, I'll be in jg's bathroom in the fetal position listening to The Cure...

posted by wingnut4life at 10:34 PM on May 19, 2006

I'm coming pretty close to attempting to destroy all Cure CD's in existance.

Just browsing it - I think I might be a lock for the Costanza. Seems that I have rated the surviving teams lower than just about anybody else down at the bottom of the table, so going forward I won't have as many points coming in no matter what happens. And I thought I had decent picks!

posted by gspm at 12:28 PM on May 20, 2006

I don't know about that gspm - I only gave Buffalo 2 points so I gain 4 points on you everytime they win and they are looking pretty good in this game. We both gave Edmonton a point so I don't think anything is locked yet.

posted by skydivemom at 02:54 PM on May 20, 2006

I've analyzed the bottom 7 spots, and there is a SLIM chance for gspm to finish anywhere but last place. Examining who everyone has assigned points to, and compared it to the selections that gspm has, there are only two ways that gspm can make up points on ANYONE in the bottom 7 spots: - skydivemom has picked Buffalo 4 positions worse than gspm did (2 points vs 6 points) - BullpenPro has picked Buffalo 1 position worse than gspm did (5 points vs 6 points) Because skydivemom has the same point value for Edmonton as gspm, she could end up behind gspm at the end if Buffalo sweeps it's series now, Edmonton sweeps it's series, and Buffalo wins just one game in the finals (or at least win +1 game more than Anaheim wins in the semi-finals). However, if Carolina wins one game, then Buffalo would need to win this series (4-1) AND win at least two games in the finals (against Edmonton, assuming Anaheim was swept). If Carolina wins 2 games, then Buffalo needs to win this series and win the Stanley Cup. If Anaheim wins the other series, then Buffalo would have to sweep this series AND the finals to end up TIED with gspm. The only other option for gspm to not win the Costanza is if Buffalo and Edmonton win their series in sweeps, and Buffalo wins at least 2 games in the finals (or 3-times as many wins as Anaheim wins in the semi-finals, assuming there is no Edmonton sweep). If that doesn't happen, then BullpenPro will pass gspm and never look back.

The Oilers are saving the Doc's lead. When the Sharks were up 2-0, I thought NoMich had this all wrapped up.

posted by qbert72 at 06:35 AM on May 24, 2006

Curse Edmonton. I blame them for all my problems. Now, instead of reciving the glorious Costanza I will probably settle for second last. /sigh

posted by Ying Yang Mafia at 10:29 AM on May 24, 2006

YYM, you gave the Oilers 1 lowly point, and they're leading the Win column as of today. You picked perfectly for the Costanza. You need to curse another team. Also, did you get my email about your NBA confidence pool?

posted by qbert72 at 10:50 AM on May 24, 2006

Man, I cannot believe that I gave the Oil a mere 2 points. I got the other three teams correct though.

posted by NoMich at 11:12 AM on May 24, 2006

Some previous insight from the Spofi Collective about the Edmonton Oilers:

Edmonton should not win this series. They don't have the scoring, don't have the defensive depth, don't have the goaltending consistency. Rollie ain't the answer. I see a few diluted souls picking the Oilers to beat Detroit. Just wondering why? I've seen the Oilers play lots this year with my Hockey Package and for the life of me I just don't get it.......... Detroit takes this series in a sweep! I'll take my lumps if the Oilers win this series but I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for that to happen. Detroit in 5 -- I'm just being nice to Chris Pronger in giving him one game.

posted by qbert72 at 01:21 PM on May 24, 2006

But then again, nintool said this: "1)Detroit vs 8)Edmonton: EDMONTON in 5 ...yea detroit is done. legacy has no experience in the big time. pronger will be huge for the oilers." And the good Doctor was spot on with this: "(2) Carolina vs (7) Montréal The Canadiens have looked good at points this year, but not enough points to make a real postseason splash. I can see Carolina dropping the first one or two as they shift into playoff mode, but they'll come back and win a longer series. Carolina in 6."

I'm just trying to give NoMich company. But I have to admit your first round prediction were ace, Dr.
