Why would you want a lower number? Nothing good comes out of having a low number. There's nothing in Spofi's Two-Digit Champagne Lounge except for some stale sandwiches and an extra backgammon board. Really, nothing to see in here. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to check up on one of the 15k kids. He's polishing the yacht.

Yeah, this happens every once in a while. If there's an extended break close to the end of a period, the referees have the option of saying the hell with it and moving the intermission up. The glass changes tend to be pretty quick nowadays, though. From how fast they do it, I'm guessing the NHL rinks run drills to swap the glass in & out as fast as possible. I've seen it happen with brawls, too. If things are really close to flashpoint, and multiple scraps are happening at once, they'll send everyone to the dressing rooms to cool off for 15 minutes and just tack the extra time on to the next period.

If memory serves, the quiz came about as a minimum-intelligence hurdle, to keep mouth-breathers and youtube-level comments off the site. It goes back about a year, and there was no small amount of discussion about it when it went down. I agree, however, about the guidelines & wiki needing to be more prominently displayed. They're guidelines, not rules, and that needs to be reinforced, but I'm with you on that. (That correction was a tetch picayune, though, wasn't it.)

Ovechkin is a lock for the Hart. Iginla & Malkin had stellar years, but Alex not only was the most exciting and highest-powered player in the game, he's also the most publicized. He's been on SportsCenter every night this season, and the NHL can't buy that kind of PR. Seriously, they can't afford it, and no one would sell it to them. Ovechkin going away. I love that two of the three Selke candidates are teammates (and often linemates). John Madden should be happy to have been nominated. Pominville for the Lady Byng. St. Louis has won it before (I think, I'm not looking it up), and Datsyuk... well, I guess he could win it. I agree, NoMich. Toews for the Calder. Kane was no slouch, but Toews is already mature and fully formed as a player. He's only going to get better. Chara and Phaneuf both had Norris caliber seasons, but if it doesn't go to Lidstrom on inertia alone, I'd be surprised. Brodeur had a quietly great year, and he probably deserves to win the Vezina, but I'd sure like to see Lundqvist take it.

lilnemo, I think Scrabble scores aren't the worst thing that could be posted, not by far. But then again, I didn't go to an American college, so all that stuff kind of passes through me. But Scrabble? Why the hell not. Darts? Spelling Bees? Competitive Eating? Arm wrestling? Rock Paper Scissors? Dwarf Tossing? Chess? Beer Pong? World of Warcraft? Foxy Boxing? Monkey Baseball? Survivor: Cleveland? Cheese Hockey? The Democratic Primary? Fingernail growing contests? Prison breaks? Spin the bottle? Exquisite Corpse? Flava of Love? I crossed a line in there somewhere. Sorry.

I'm sorry. What I said upthread may have been construed as dickish and snarky. I don't for one minute propose we take any actual credit for anything he's doing or has done. He's just someone who's passed through here, has been a person of interest on SpoFi before, and is trying to do something big and interesting. I figured it was worth an update. The rest is me being mouthy. To be very clear, past wc2k2's investment, we do not, and have never, had anything to do with him, nor, except for one comment, he with us. That I implied otherwise was just my feeble and apparently ham-handed attempt at a joke.

Okay, he's not exactly a one-digit spofite with 150 FPPs or anything, but when someone who's on our rolls is trying to accomplish something this massive, then we should take as much credit for his success as we can without stepping on him. So yeah, he's heard of us, he's doing something really large and pretty cool (one might say cold, even), so I'm prepared, for the purposes of this thread, to just go ahead and call him One Of Us.

Like tommytrump, I'm partial to the local guys of my childhood, and while I have heard all these guys broadcast, it's one thing to hear them do a game or two, and quite another to carry on a two-hours-a-day, six-months-a-year, decades-long relationship with them. Some of us listen to them more than we listen to our own parents or spouses. The connection can easily get that deep with the play-by-play guy in your chosen sport. (Hi, Joe Bowen!) I may know what that relationship is like with a Vin Scully or a Jack Buck, but I only listened to Harwell or Caray or Uecker every once in a while, and that's a little different. These guys created a world that was best experienced day-to-day. Stopping in for the occasional national game of the week isn't the same. It's like watching a single episode of Days Of Our Lives. You'll get the gist of what's happening, but if you follow it every day for a long time, it makes a lot more sense. What I'd really like to see is people waxing poetic about their local broadcasters.

I always figured it was because the QB was far enough away that shouting the count was unreliable, especially in a noisy stadium, so it's kind of an "I'm ready when you are, Mister Center" deal. But the Whizzing Dog theory sounds totally plausible.

As a reader, I'm really wary of speculation-only links, especially around off-field issues. There's enough troll fodder on the front page naturally that I'm not interested in seeing more more fuel for it. (That's what the Yahoo and ESPN boards are for.) At least tie the links to an actual development in the case, like an indictment, conviction or release. There are going to be 50 more Barry Bonds posts over the next year or so as it is. Sorry, texasred. I kind of agree with the deletion.

Yeah, well, if you're disgusted enough to quit a place you've put a lot of time and effort into and you leave without saying anything, then there's 0% chance that it will ever change. Better you say something than you say nothing. That's what blogs, whether personal or community ones, are all about. A public resignation is not automatically the flourish of a petulant drama queen, and to lump all of them together in that boat is a bit disingenuous. Now that said, he's right. This has become a lint trap for glaring-blaring headliney bullshit. I stopped posting links to the front page myself, because people only seemed interested in the back-page-of-the-paper things. (No one noticed, did they. But hey, at least I wasn't a drama queen!) That's natural. It's sports, it's supposed to be a diversion. The people who get all academic about it will always be outnumbered by the where-did-my-team's-running-back-get-arrested bunch. It's only natural. I'm not saying it's right, and I'm not saying we shouldn't keep trying to swim upstream on that stuff (and I sense that by the Star Chamber, he means anyone who'll read this thread seriously or especially post in it), but -- the idiocy can get you down. (Can I get a hell yeah up in this bitch, or whut!)

That's true about Kewell, though I just chalked it up to him still being rusty from -- what, a year? Longer? -- his long injury hiatus. He's made a few appearances over the last few months, but he's clearly yet to get his full sea legs under him. That's only going to take time. I don't understand why Crouch doesn't get more playing time. He makes defences uncomfortable just by his presence, and it's not like the pretty Spaniard or even Voronin is finishing any more consistently than he is.
