Eric Staal's bachelor party nets fourteen arrests.: Sure, it ain't no refs on the take from the mafia, marquee quarterback in dog fighting imbroglio, or steroid (?) icon taking over one of the marquee records in the game, but, man, the NHL is MESSED UP.

Ok so some drunk hockey players (kids mostly) make a bunch of noise and have to spend a night in the drunk tank as a result. What a compelling story. Let's see, no drugs, no hookers, no dog fighting, no gun shots fired, and nobody went to the hospital. Looks like they woke up some cranky neighbors. What's the problem again?

Where is the party boat on the lake? Oh sorry, my bad, that's football. Wrong sport, damn I hate it when I do that.

And somehow I am reminded of "all you can eat seats night". Oh wait, I'm thinking about the wrong thread and my own bachelor party.

Any time you put together (a) a bunch of Canadians, (b) the words Thunder and Bay (and yes, I realize this was in Minnesota, but as they say -- you can take the boys out of Thunder Bay, but you can't take the Thunder Bay out of the boys), and (c) beer, we are talking explosive mix.

I spent 2 years in Thunder Bay one winter. How nasty a town is T. Bay? Terry Fox ran across Canada to raise money for cancer research (on one leg mind you), got to Thunder Bay, said if the rest of the country looks like this, I'm quitting, and he did.

I thought it was a paradise. Different place?

Boy oh Boy those crazy Canucks drinking beer and making noise in the Northwoods. No strippers, no guns, no pitbulls those hosers must of been into the Ale. I'm lookin for my role models in curling from now on.

If no one gets arrested at your bachelor party then you have lousy friends who don't know how to throw a party.

I thought it was a paradise. Different place? Is that Brady Anderson?

Not only was there a lack of strippers, pit bulls, steroids, and doped up cyclists, the Staal's actually went to bed when the cops first showed up! A couple of hours later they get thrown out of bed, and kicked out of the hotel. Wake my ass up after just a couple of hours of sleep after I've been drinking all night, and you'll see some disorderly conduct for sure, eh? Non-story...I think Stern and Selig are behind it, trying to divert the media away from their leagues.

''It was a bachelor's party gone awry.'' Ah, those were the days... Bachelor party's are supposed to be loud and rambunctious. That's just the way it is. They were trying to have a good time, not trying to hurt anyone.

Hey, friends prevent friends from doing anything stupid. REAL friends will sit in the jail cell with you saying "That was fun!!" Uhmmm, what am I commenting on again? Someone throwing an old disco record at an athlete?

I don't have a humorous comment to add, but I really think this is rather a tempest in a teapot. The only thing I will say is that there could be a bit of a warning flag here. Getting drunk and disorderly once (or even more than once, but rarely) is one thing, but if it happens more often, you have an alcoholic on your hands. I'm not sure anyone wants to have to deal with that. You don't have to be a frequent drinker to be an alcoholic. Binge drinking on a regular, even if infrequent, basis qualifies.

Sounds my my college apartment on a weekly basis. I think we had the cops called 9 times for noise violations. Welcome to the wonder years.

You don't have to be a frequent drinker to be an alcoholic. Binge drinking on a regular, even if infrequent, basis qualifies. But what do I win?

Binge drinking on a regular, even if infrequent, basis qualifies. Does "every time you get married" qualify as "regular?"

I spent 2 years in Thunder Bay one winter. Love it. Good quip. The part of the police story that unfortunately ressembles the breakdown in logic that follows a big night of drinking during my late teens/early 20s: "After leaving the property, the group gathered on Highway 61 and began harassing passing motorists. At approximately 4:00 a.m. the suspects were placed under arrest for disorderly conduct and obstructing the legal process. Some of the suspects fled in to the nearby woods."

Does "every time you get married" qualify as "regular?" It does, if you are Zsa Zsa Gabor, Elisabeth Taylor, or their ilk. But what do I win? A lifetime membership in the Hangover of the Month Club. I'm a charter member. My minor in college was alcohol consumption, at which I did very well. The less said about my academic standing in my major, the better.

None of 'em even punched a cop? I didn't hear a thing about strippers, either. Staal's marriage is doomed.

posted by tahoemoj at 02:01 PM on July 26, 2007

Some of the suspects fled in to the nearby woods. In my mind, they were screaming like little girls and running with their hands over their heads. At least the Staals had the balls to take their punishment.

This was a bachelors party? And they didn't even Pig Crate him? Amateurs!

posted by commander cody at 03:44 PM on July 26, 2007

The one thing that's stupid and I can't figure out is why, with Jordan Staal being under 21, did they not party north of the border (they weren't far as it was) where the drinking age is 19. Do they hate Thunder Bay that much? I can't blame them.

Jail: Better Than Thunder Bay.
