By far he is the best player ever. of course players like Wilt and Dr.J we amazing player and atheletes. But as far as a all around player and leader I think Jordan is he best player because he was a great leader and he stepped up when his team needed him every time.

Wilt, Dr. J, Kareem, Oscar, Russel and some of the other greats (the list can go on for WEEKS) may have been better athletes than Michael, but nobody, and I mean NOBODY would say no to Michael shooting the last shot in a pressure-filled game...he's done it too many times... Michael has the best heart amongst all players...nobody competed as fiercely or expected as much of himself as he did...

chitownjordan: I saw that Mark Jackson comment and thought to myself "don't get upset, afterall that is Mark Jackson...a player who was scorched by Jordan and the Bulls as a Knick and Pacer, so his opinion means absolutely nothing!" I don't think he will surpass Jordan as being the G.O.A.T. Kobe is a great player, but it is too early to make that kind of statement! We'll have to wait 'til he's about 33 to see how well he plays then. As Jordan aged he adjusted his game and was still very effective and plus he had 5 MVP trophies!

JORDAN WAS A GREAT PLAYER. THERE WERE ALOT OF PLAYERS THAT WERE AS GREAT. RUSSELL A GREAT REBOUNDER AND SHOT BLOCKER. WILT AVE 50.4 PTS A GM FOR A SEASON AND OVER 20 REBOUNDS A GAME THE SAME SEASON. OSCAR ROBERTSON A TRIPLE DOUBLE THE WHOLE SEASON. JORDAN NEVER DID ANY OF THESE THINGS. HOWEVER BACK WHEN THESE PLAYERS PLAYED CARRYING OR PALMING THE BALL WAS CALLED WHEN DID JORDAN OR ANY PLAYER TODAY GET CALLED FOR THAT? NOT TO MENTION TRAVELING.BOTTOM LINE THE NBA WAS IN TROUBLE ,JORDAN CAME IN AT A GREAT TIME. HE WAS GREAT FOR THE LEAUGE. WAS HE THE BEST NOT HARDLEY.MATCH HIS TEAM UP AGAINST THE CELTICS THAT WON 8 IN A ROW. HE WOULD HAVE HAD TROUBLE IN THE LANE WITH RUSSELL. OR THE KNICKS WITH REED. I MYSELF THINK WILT IS THE GREATEST PLAYER EVER.

Jordan was bigger than the game. People tuned in just to watch Mike. You can compare records all day, but Jordan single handedly destroyed franchises.

Jordan was and probably still is synonymous with basketball. Can you say the same thing for everyone else in their prime? I think not.

I think that any list claiming to comprise the greatest players in the game's history must also include names such as Jabbar, Magic, West, and Bird. Regardless of the criteria used to base judgement (i.e. athletecism, heart, MVP awards, points, or titles), Jordan's name should rise near the top of the list. Is Kobe better than Micheal? Of course not, but not because he's selfish. Kobe has to score for his team to have a decent chance of winning. The bulls needed Mike, but not as much as the Lakers need #8. Last time I checked, shooting alot was ok as long as it was in the context of the offense, you had a decent percentage, and your team was winning. In my opinion, Jordan is still the king, but I certainly welcome any comparisons to Kobe.

Wilt i agree would of stuffed Mike in the paint. Like Gretzky not taking a hit to the boards,Mike was able to travel alot. Kobe could of hung playing with the old schoolers but Mike, i see him whining alot if he played back then. His way,or no way.Living here i heard the stories from some writers how all the other players on the Bulls feared him. He was thier poster boy and almost lost it all with his gambling fix. I know this,he sucked at baseball...

Kobe needs several more rings to even be considered alongside Michael.

What about Kareem? He's still the all time leading scorer. And I believe he had 6 MVP trophies....

Bill, at last count, M.J. has six rings, and Kobe has three. Now I know that some guys go an entire career without getting a title, and the Lakers are no where near getting back to the Finals, but come on...several more rings??? You must be confusing Jordan with Russell.

Like Kobe, Jordan did his biggest scoring when his team sucked. The thing that's amazing to me about Jordan is that he averaged almost 29 points/game as a rookie! He was injured most of the next year, but still scored 69 in a playoff game (which they lost). The next year he averaged over 37. This year is the first time anyone's come anywhere near him since then. As much as I love Jordan (I lived in Chicago for 12 years, covering pretty much the entire Jordan era), I believe Wilt may have been the better overall player. He won the MVP as a rookie and once averaged 50 points a game. If he had played during the Bird-Magic-Michael era, he would've been the biggest of stars. He also had the misfortune of playing during the Celtics' dominance in the 60s, and prior to the free-agent era. Accross all sports, I think Gretzky may be the greatest of them all. Go look at his stats. In every significant statistical category, he doesn't just lead, he looks like a pro next to high school kids. 50 goals in 35 games!?!

You cannot really compare the old teams to the more recent ones such as the Celtics who won 8 in a row to the Bulls that won 6 titles. I believe if we could see that match up, the most recent team would have an edge. The players of today's NBA are much stronger and athletic than those guys in the old days. I am not saying that today's players are more talented, but they are stronger and faster than those players of old. Of course athleticsm does not win games alone, but those guys (Celts) did not have to compete against a team filled with good athletes. The game was slower because the players were. Like I said, I am not saying that the player were more talented!

Comparing athletes of today with dinosaurs of the past is pointless. wilt was amazing but he was just ahead of his time. as athletic as a smaller player and stronger than most big guys- theres no doubt hes a legend!!- but to compare anyone in the same light as Jordan is just ludacris. as someone mentioned earlier in this piece- "he became bigger than any team"- i think he became bigger than the game itself. i'm irish (actually from ireland) and to come from a country where basketball comes way way down the list of sports to play (or watch) as a kid- Jordan was and is as big as any big soccer star!! ask an average person outside america to name one bball player- i guarantee 9 out of 10 say jordan.& wilt who???? Now as for kobe- come on hes a selfish baby turncoat. iverson is the same- no team with an ego that big can win a championship......unless its balanced with a strong team mentality. kobe dont have it and neither does iverson- rather pull up and force a 3 than dish for an easy lay-up

I don't know J was good... but a total sell out. what about KG dude multi level world MVP!! plus he realy is the only real big man that could easily play point, or anyother position for that matter. I mean most the wolves are whiney little "I cant feed my family" on millions of dollars but KG hes the man plays with heart and soul. Even with the big money he helps out and gives back to the community. can he wear the haynes or dose he have to eat ballp[arks like Kobe no talent why dose shaq hate me Bryant? I don't know but I deffinatly think it is the most realistic possibility. Thanks for hearing me out.
