Korea beats USA: In a 7-3 loss, the Koreans exploited some key flaws in team USA's armor...surprised? I think not.

Whoa, Korea is on a roll.

I thought Korea looked danged good against Japan and Willis didn't have his "A" stuff to be sure. Methinks he would have benefitted from a propa spring training. The US fielding, although what I saw of it was on the highlights shows, seemed to be pretty bad. Could we attribute that to lack of concentration? As the old saying goes, defense shouldn't slump. Or something like that.

The USA team needs to pull there heads out of there ass, it seems to me that we have all these professional leagues with the highest payed players in the world and we tell the world that we're the best with our NBA WORLD CHAMPS and our MLB WORLD CHAMPS but when it comes time to prove it we are coming up short lately but there's always the excuses like we didn't send are best or it's spring training or what ever but you know what they say about excuses. My hats are off to the players who commented there time and energy to represent our great country so good luck to team USA but please pull your heads out of yours ass, PLEASE...............

I guess the one good thing about this is that the Koreans are really sticking it to the damn Baseball Prospectus.

The USA team needs to pull there heads out of there ass... "Plexiglass Belly": When your head is so far up your ass, you need plexiglass on your belly so you can see. Maybe the U.S. came in to the WBC thinking that they were the best in the world. They need to check their ego's at the door and start playing with at least half of the passion that these other countries have.

hmmm.. maybe they're just not as good? I guess the one good thing about this is that the Koreans are really sticking it to the damn Baseball Prospectus. how so?

ninjavshippo, it's a SpoFi WBC Pick 'em inside joke...shhhhh, don't tell anyone else!

It is a PRIVILEDGE to represent your country in this competition. Those who committed and later backed out should be ashamed! I don't think we sent our best team to this tournament (again!). But Im sure hope the good ole' USA wins it!!

Its just the A-Rod factor - put him on your team and you loose.

ninjavshippo, Baseball Prospectus ran a whole whack of simulations of the tournament, and published the results. grum suggested that we enter those results as a pick 'em set in the SpoFi WBC Pick 'Em. Up until Korea started turning heads, the Baseball Prospectus entry was winning, much to the chagrin of us human users.

DrJohn, that was classified information you've just promulgated (I love dictionaries and thesauruses!) We have no choice but to expose you for the Baseball Prospectus that you are.

Sal, are you suggesting that a team from a foreign league could defeat the World Series champs in a seven-game series? Could you nominate that team for me? And could you also do the same for a professional team that could knock off the Detroit Pistons in a seven-game series? Because, in either case, I don't think one exists. There's no claim that the Americans on the MLB or NBA champs are the greatest -- just that the team that wins either the World Series or the NBA title is the best in the world, and those squads contain players from all over the globe. Argument?

You can nominate any number of teams, and the only way to discern which team would win is to have them play. But, they don't play. The Pistons are the best team put together under NBA rules. How do you know the Pistons could beat the Yugoslavia or Argentina?
posted by bperk at 09:18 AM on March 16, 2006
Actually, a team from Yugoslavia or Argentina. How would Argentina do against the Spurs without Ginobili?

Who knows how the USA domestic champions would do in a tournament against other domestic champions? Because until that tournament takes place it just sounds ridiculously self-aggrandizing. You can call yourself "world champions" when you win a world championship. Pretty simple, really.

"I just had bad rhythm today," he said. "I think I was very composed out there. I had a great game plan, I just didn't execute. I'm just not playing the best baseball I can possibly play. My confidence is still up." I don't know who Willis' PR guy is, but he needs a new one...
