Pokey Reese is Missing: Marlins trying to contact their second baseman whom they haven't seen since Wednesday.

Reese's agent said the ballplayer was safe, but that's all the team knows.

First the journalist lists all the tradgedies that the man's been through (the most recent being 9 years ago) and then they allude to the fact that it is somehow part of the reason that he is missing? This journalist is really stretching it this time.

Pokey Found He's been found. No word on where he's been but the Marlins are really relieved that his .221 BA will be in the lineup this year.

Where in the world is pokey?

Christ, if we're going to be all picky, where the hell is Donnie Sadler?

I think I saw him in seattle last year; but he was gone so fast it could have been someone else!

Where's Pokey?

Wow, the guy sure has seen his fair share of tragedy. It's a wonder that he is still around ot play baseball. Oh, and Pokey Reese has the best name in baseball. The name has shortstop written all over it.

Whom is jerseygirl? Just kidding, but jerseygirl can never find Pokey Reese "who the Marlins haven't seen ..." I think he is waiting down by the Alamo, wishing the Marlins would hurry up and get there.

sorry but who the hell is Pokey Reese ???

Every team should have at least one Pokey Reese in the lineup. It is the most baseball name in all of baseball.

One of the biggest tragedies in this whole thing is the Florida Marlins in general. I feel bad for Joe Girardi. He signs on for his first managerial gig with a talented team, and now is left with Dontrelle Willis and not much else. As for Pokey, I don't wish anything bad on anyone. Has anyone checked with Gumby? (Many of you are probably way, WAY too young for that reference).

posted by dyams at 07:35 AM on March 04, 2006

Dyams: I wouldn't feel too bad for Girardi. The Marlins office knows the deal -- the expectations on Girardi could not be lower. I think this is a great opportunity for a young manager to get his feet wet and grow with a bunch of young players. And, in the not-so-distant future, this club is going to be really, really good again. And count me among those who got the Gumby reference... and laughed... Pokey Reese IS a great baseball name -- probably goes on my All-Baseball-Name Team. I hope he once again finds the ballfield a good sanctuary from his troubles.

And count me among those who got the Gumby reference... and laughed... Ditto, dammit!

It's Gumby, DOMMITT!!, but nice job, Dyams! My take on this is that our man, cut adrift by SEVERAL clubs over the last couple of years, woke up one morning in his Marlin jam-jams and, looking around, realized it WASN'T a dream, after all. He gets bummed and goes "poof" on his new mates. He, along with that .221, will ultimately turn up in the Indy league, wearing Rickey's old jersey. And if we're voting on names, I still like Coco Crisp. Had some this morning, with nanners and milk. Damn good!

In a related story, Eddie Murphy WILL be at the Academy Awards ceremony, tomorrow night.

That picture of Gumby is GREAT! I agree with you, BullpenPro, about the Marlins growing into a very good team in the future. They've done that before. My only hope is the team allows Girardi to stay around after these young stars start learning how to win.

Hey people!! Face it, the Marlins suck, they've always sucked, and they probably always will suck. Sorry to break the news

Oh, I forgot to mention.....If I were a Marlins fan, I think I'd rather have gumby than pokey on my team.....they'd get more production

When I didn't show up for two days at my job one time no one came looking, my boss just left a message informing me of my unemployment and telling me if I didn't return the uniform they would dock my pay. It wasn't even a nice uniform, just a blue Dickey's shirt with someone else's name on the pocket and another someone else's name written on the tag with a marker. Maybe he is hiding so he won't have to return the uniform.

Face it, the Marlins suck, they've always sucked, and they probably always will suck. Sorry to break the news Yeah, especially those two years that they won the World Series. Thanks for the insight, Einstein.

THAT uniform? I'd sooner have the blue Dickie's shirt, I don't care HOW many names have been on it... No offense to Fish fans, as the others have said, your squad will turn out alright, and maybe young blood Girardi's hard-assed attitude will get them on the good foot, but man, those unis have got to gooooooo.......

Where do they grow these people? Depends on what breed. Half are from Nebraska, the other half from east Siberia.

Where do they grow these people? Same place they grow mushrooms, dyams: a dark, damp place, piled high with shit.

I hope he squares away whatever took him away from camp. From what I know of him in his brief stint with the Red Sox, he seemed like a good guy who overcame a lot of obstacles in his life with unparalleled poverty as a child, his father was an alcoholic, two of his children's mothers died, his son saw his maternal grandmother and great grandmother murdered. He hasn't had an easy life.

posted by jerseygirl at 02:59 PM on March 05, 2006

Marlins cut Pokey loose. I hope Pokey can get things straightened out and get back. I like the guy. Plus, as Dyams noted, now things in Florida have gotten really Uggla for new manager Girardi...

posted by BullpenPro at 11:57 PM on March 05, 2006

Pokey will catch on somewhere!!! Any one giving him a rough time over this should be a little more compasionate. The Marlins did what they felt they needed to do, and I'm not faulting them. However sometimes people hit rough spots, and guess what : that's life. Given what he's been through cut the guy a break. THE MAN FIELDS A SHORT HOP AND MOVES TO HIS LEFT WITH GRACE EVERY INFIELDER ON EARTH WOULD GIVE THEIR FIRST BORN FOR!!!!
