Pony: : Can we have the same three minute rule to edit FPPs, too?

posted by jerseygirl to feature requests at 06:18 PM - 33 comments

I don't like this idea. I love the ability to edit comments, but I think FPP should only be edited by mods, and only when really necessary. I think with FPPs one should read, read and then read again before hitting the post button. With FPP one isn't replying to someone else, so I am not sure what the hurry would be. I am not saying jersygirl (or anyone else) is in a hurry, just that I tend to fire off comments quickly (after reading the link, of course *ahem*), and I think posts should take more time and thought. Tosses $.02 into the basket. Wishes for doughnuts.

Don't fuck up next time. Hey, ump, how about a warning? Sure. Watch out you don't get killed.

Hey, ump, how about a warning? Sure. Watch out you don't get killed. I'm not sure how this applies. But the quote is so good it doesn't matter. Excellent.

Listen, chum, don't be so shellfish. This is a piranhial problem for everyone. Your brain is a mussel. Don't shrimp on editing, and remember that you can fine tuna your post all you want. The reaction will be the salmon a few minutes as it will any sooner. If you don't have the time to mullet over and make your post appropriately koi and crappie, then wait till the marlin. You can think it (tr)out all you want. You shouldn't be perching FPPs on the pike just for the halibut anyway. Put a little extra work into the grouper don't bother.

You can tune a piano, but you can't tune a fish.

njsk8r: the hell you can't. I never took anything REO Speedwagon said as gospel anyways. Also, I tried to work a clam reference in there somewhere, but it just wasn't happening. Also, I'm drunk.

obviously :-)

Why don't you just clam up, pal?

Because people do screw up, or have a "Oh, I should have added..." and it will save the mods the time of fixing stupid mistakes (double posts at nearly the same time, broken links, etc), make the front page cleaner looking (hopefully). Yes, people should read, read, read but everyone should read, read, read their comments too. What's the downside of having a small grace period to go back to an FPP and make an adjustment or trashing the post altogether?

posted by jerseygirl at 06:37 AM on March 04, 2006

chico, I don't know which is worse, the fact that I used an REO reference or the fact that you picked it up. If you are feeling hungover this morning may I suggest taking a couple Advil, a multi-vitamin, and some gatorade. Now it's time for me to fly.

Ok, I'm going to show off my stupidity. What, exactly, is an FPP?

FPP=Front Page Post.........Hope that helps.....

I don't have an answer, jerseygirl, just an opinion that a post should be crafted and prepared before hitting post. There is already a preview. I agree that comments should be read, read and re-read as well, but I think comments come second to the links/posts. I know this last point is debatable: whether the site is about the links or the discussion, but personally I think it is about the links. It is a filter of all the sport-related news. Again, my $.02. I'd be interested to see what the admins say.... other than "/brim shot". Your question is valid.

I'd be interested to see what the admins say.... other than "/brim shot". I would say it's an interesting idea. Personally, I don't think I've ever had to change one of my own fpps. It seems natural for me to take more time with a front page post than the 32nd comment in a random thread. I also don't think that most people who make crappy posts wouldn't care enough to go back and correct anything. That said, I can certainly appreciate someone's frustration when they can't correct something (ex. messed up link). I'd also say that this would be something to run by kirk, but it might be a bad time until everything settles down. Pony request might be put on the backburner until we're sure the site won't crash and burn again. But I could be wrong. Kirk or rcade might pop up and clarify.

Wasn't going after you, terrapin. Hope it didn't come off that way. Everything should be well crafted and well previewed before posting, but we all have our moments where we could have worded things better (whom? Eeesh) or fixed a link. And yes, it won't stop crappy people who make crappy posts that link back to Sportsfilter.com, but it will help people who do actually care. And sure, it's not an #1 pony, but maybe something to consider.

posted by jerseygirl at 01:43 PM on March 04, 2006

One further justification for jerseygirl's suggestion (of which I am in favor) is that when I preview an FPP I do not always get a reliable view of the post. Sometimes the post gets truncated as though the sentences are running off the right side of the page. I do not have this issue with regular posts, but if others share this issue then I would argue that you need the 3-minute edit time even MORE for FPPs.

posted by BullpenPro at 02:40 PM on March 04, 2006

I'm open to both editing and deleting posts (I've occasionally posted things with mistakes or double-posted without catching it first), but if we do it we'll have to wait until we get everything switched over. I don't think I'd want a longer window for deleting or editing posts than for comments, because the idea for both is to make a quick fix. Futzing around unti it's perfect is what preview is for. crappy posts that link back to Sportsfilter.com Once we get switched over we'll be able improve how we test for stuff like this.

posted by kirkaracha at 02:57 PM on March 04, 2006

Perhaps the "automatic banning of users with numbers in their usernames filter" pony could be tested as well? I kid because I care.

Wasn't going after you, terrapin. Didn't think you were, jerseygirl. We're cool. And I wasn't going after justgary either, in case he thought so.

posted by scully at 03:36 PM on March 04, 2006

Ok, just so we're clear, no one was going after anyone! We're lowering the Terror Alert Warning to chartreuse. Carry on.

I'm currently moving all of the data over to the new server. So no pony, but maybe later a horse.

posted by rcade at 07:34 PM on March 04, 2006

You pull this off, rcade, and I am going to googlebomb with "rcade is hung like a horse"

posted by scully at 09:54 AM on March 05, 2006

I'm currently moving all of the data over to the new server. So no pony, but maybe later a horse. Does this mean we'll get the first 1K posts and the Locker Room archives back?

posted by Ufez Jones at 11:16 AM on March 05, 2006

If I pay you, terrapin, can you change rcade to wfrazerjr and bomb away?

posted by wfrazerjr at 12:21 PM on March 05, 2006

Does this mean we'll get the first 1K posts and the Locker Room archives back? Yep. They're already in the database. I think.

posted by rcade at 01:02 PM on March 05, 2006

Does this move explain why my profile currently says no posts and 18 comments to the Locker Room? Because I've made more more than 18 comments that are mortally embarrasing, much less in total.

posted by billsaysthis at 01:38 PM on March 05, 2006

Yep. Most Locker Room content is already off this server, which had to be done to free up space and buy us some time.

posted by rcade at 02:08 PM on March 05, 2006

Because I've made more more than 18 comments that are mortally embarrasing Pappy always said, takes a big man to admit that he's made at least 18 mortally embarrasing locker room comments. Well, not in so many words, but you get the idea.

Pappy? You've seen ma pappy? I haven't seen that old coot in years, tell'im his boy says hi!
