I'm at work but it looks like it's still 1-0 Finland over Germany, end of 1 (or nearly).

I can't believe Switzerland couldn't beat either Germany or Italy. Are they messing with our minds or what? Happy about the KAZ win, though, which brings me up a little bit. Still kicking myself about my foolish last 6 picks. I had 5 teams from Pool B moving on. Really bright.

I think Finland has been the key to the pool standings so far. The median score for Finland from the pool members is 7.5, but NoMich and redsnare picked them for 11. Every Finland win gives them 3.5 points on the "field." Course, picking Finland high hasn't helped everybody ...

Just watched some highlights, as I had to do some real work today (grrrrr!). Some thoughts: - Vokoun sucks. Incredible that he's been outclassed by Milan Hnilicka. - If you take into account Vokoun's awful play, Canada's three goals are not that impressive. They'll have their hands full against Russia tomorrow. - I don't understand why Switzerland finishes ahead of Canada with two wins against Canada's three and the same number of points. - Two quarters look like semis (CZE-SVK and CAN-RUS) but if the trend continues, we could be in for surprises.

posted by qbert72 at 07:47 PM on February 21, 2006

There should be interesting stuff at the top of the leaderboard tomorrow. Leader NoMich has two very bad quarterfinal matchups: CZE-SVK = 8-7 SWE-SUI = 6-5 The rest of the leaders are pretty even, in terms of their best-case scenarios. Maximum point outcomes (max = 42): NoMich: CAN,FIN,CZE,SWE = 37 redsnare: RUS,FIN,CZE,SWE = 40 grum: CAN,FIN,CZE,SWE = 42 wingnut: CAN,FIN,CZE,SWE = 42 mkn: RUS,FIN,CZE,SWE = 40 emoeby: CAN,FIN,CZE,SWE = 40 Ufez: CAN,FIN,CZE,SWE = 40 gspm: CAN,FIN,CZE,SWE = 41 elovrich: CAN,FIN,CZE,SWE = 41 owlhouse: CAN,FIN,CZE,SWE = 42

posted by gspm at 08:12 PM on February 21, 2006

Everybody picked SWE for more points than SUI, but: the person most hoping for a SUI upset should be Ufez. Everybody picked CZE for more points than SVK, but: the people most hoping for a SVK win should be NoMich and skydivedad. (This doesn't consider what it will mean going forward; only at the end of the day tomorrow.)

posted by Amateur at 08:13 PM on February 21, 2006

for the other "leader" board shouldn't you calculate the minimum point outcomes?

posted by goddam at 08:21 PM on February 21, 2006

Actually, gspm, if you just consider NoMich, you can gain five points on him if your best-case scenario doesn't come true. CAN-USA-CZE-SWE 40 for gspm 35 for NoMich Also, at that point NoMich will have 12-9-8-6 going forward into the next round, and you will have 12-11-10-7. I don't know how the matchups will go but there's the potential for another big swing in the last two rounds. I don't think the battle for supremacy is over yet. Me, on the other hand, I'm another five points back, which is hopeless.

posted by Amateur at 08:22 PM on February 21, 2006

SWI finishes ahead of CAN on the first tiebreaker, head-to-head record. Thanks Amateur. I figured that was the reason, which is inconsistent with the NHL tiebreakers, where the number of wins would have been used. They can have different rules, of course.

The only thing we can guarantee is that wingnut4life cannot win the pool. He has the exact same picks as me, except for Switzerland, where I get more points than he does. Therefore, no matter how well he does, I'll remain at least 2 points ahead of him. Other than that, it kind of hurts my head to try and do the math without using a spreadsheet, but I suspect it'll be easier after tomorrow.

posted by grum@work at 10:35 PM on February 21, 2006

Hm, maybe I should've added a "projection" feature in which you could add/subtract wins from teams to see how you'd do. But then I definitely would've had to pollute the results with a little "available for hire" ad.

For people who want to noodle, here is a MS Excel spreadsheet. Just change the value of 'Wins' in the first row to see different hypothetical scenarios; you can re-sort rows 3-34 to see your new ranking. I changed the order of the teams so that those no longer in play are on the right-hand side, and the teams that are matched up today are paired side-by-side.

Nice, Amateur! You are much better at spreadsheets than I (which is probably why the leaderboard is database-driven).

Amateur Thanks after various noodlings I'm pretty much out of this thing........... No matter what seems to be the outcomes......... Oh Well........ At least I've got some awesome hockey to watch. :)

If all the teams except for Slovakia drop out due to food poisoning, I will finish in second place.

Agreed, skydivedad, there is no way for me to win this thing either... I can get ahead of NoMich, if things go badly for him, but I can't pass all 21 people ahead of me. If everything went perfectly I think I could get to 11th place.
