Anybody interested in doing some fantasy Baseball!: I'll oraganize a Yahoo league if anybody would be interested?!? In your responses let me know some details as to th type of league you would like
I'd be interested, I've never been in a fantasy league but I'm sure none of you are in my league when it comes to fantasizing. If someone could hook it up with a link regarding fantasy sports, rules, rosters, ect. I would appreciate very much.

I'll be in it if there isn't already a set list. I also agree with tron on the head-to-head league.

Sounds like we have a good crew and a lot of interest. Sometime this week I'll try to book us for a live draft (say about 8pm EST?) during the week in March, not on a Friday evening. That okay with everyone thus far?
posted by jerseygirl at 02:27 PM on February 07, 2006
I, by the way, am in. I'm open to either format.
posted by DrJohnEvans at 02:30 PM on February 07, 2006
Um, how long do live drafts go and is there a way to auto pick during a live draft?
posted by Ying Yang Mafia at 02:53 PM on February 07, 2006
YYM: Usually about an hour or so, and yes, you can set up a pre-draft ranking which the system will use to auto-draft for you.
posted by DrJohnEvans at 02:57 PM on February 07, 2006
i'm in. same format as last year (roto) would be sweet and painless imho.
posted by YukonGold at 03:35 PM on February 07, 2006
what's the way forward here? do spofi pool alumni get any signup advantage? 'cause we're probably double the size since the last baseball pool was setup. i reckon there will be lots of interest from people that haven't been in the mix in the past... meaning what for those that were? yeah, I'm in. in some format.

I'm in, and if you could schedule the live draft on a Monday or Wensday night after 10pm est that would be better for me, and I think better for the left coasters.
posted by jbou at 06:02 PM on February 07, 2006
Think we're going to stick with the 8pm-ish timeframe, similar to what we did last year. 10pm EST is too late - the draft wouldn't end until at least midnight. Unless anyone wants to do a Saturday around noon or 1 pm EST?
posted by jerseygirl at 06:41 PM on February 07, 2006
saturday afternoon might be better. i think that's what we did last year.

Saturday around noon time would be ok with me. Jersey, must we always be at odds?
posted by jbou at 11:06 PM on February 07, 2006
I'm in. I'm basically on East Coast Time, less an hour. Oh yeah, and plus 12. So Saturday at noon Eastern is Sunday at 1AM for me. I think. Whatever. I can make it work, just let me know. Weekend works best, eh.

do spofi pool alumni get any signup advantage? 'cause we're probably double the size since the last baseball pool was setup. Can we put a realistic limit on teams. I think football this year was great because we had a lot of teams, but we were also able to translate it to a format that worked very very well. That will be a lot harder with baseball. Rotisserie baseball is designed for 10-12 teams when you use the standard rule structure. Not 24. The fact that SpoFi has a couple thousand new members is gonna be a difficult wrinkle. Hoefully we can avoid having to Angel Berroa in the second round. As usual from me...several observations, zero solutions.

we can avoid having to Angel Berroa in the second round. I'd like to think you meant "having to draft" rather than that you're using some obscure sexual reference I now have to look up on UrbanDictionary, but your use of "Hoefully" in the same sentence suggests otherwise.

Its up to you guys. What do you want to cap the league at?
posted by jerseygirl at 01:18 PM on February 08, 2006
I know the leagues are optimized for 10-12, but that's a pretty tough thing to do on SpoFi. We've tried some things in the past to make the talent level a little higher (restricting bench spots, for example) that seemed to work out reasonably well. I actually prefer the bigger leagues, since you really have to work to stay on top of the prospects and transactions in order to win. That's a lot more rewarding (to me, anyway) than having my All-Star lineup beat your All-Star lineup. Plus, you learn about minor players that never get media attention, and the last few rounds of the draft are complete crap shoots and wild guesses (you're drafting who?). Just my 2¢.

Twenty sould be doable--I have been in some fairly competive twenty team leagues.

I like deep leagues. I'm currently enjoying being thoroughly screwed over by the depth of the SpoFi NHL league.

You know you're in a deep league when Washington Capitals players frequently appear as 'Adds' in the transaction list. You know you're in deep shit when you're the one picking them up.

I think it'd be neat to play with a 30-team league, thus having active every single MLBer (or NHLer as the season may be).
posted by DrJohnEvans at 01:30 PM on February 09, 2006
I've thought about that as well. 30 teams with 25 man rosters: 8 position players, 1 DH, 5 SP, 7 RP, and 4 bench spots. And then make it a keeper league with a salary cap. Sweet.

Yes, yes! And then tie it in with a stadium management simulation.

They tried that management thing in Madden. It's more fun to jack prices and play the games in a blacked-out empty stadium like some crazy billionaire with his own private football team.

When the pool does get made it'd be nice if a) the limited spots didn't go to folks that just drop by the lockerroom and grab the password even though they (seemingly) aren't members of Sportfilter (ala 5 of 28 members of the EPL pool this year) and b) (one can dream) the people that do sign up see the whole season through (or at least have the intention to do so from the start). I imagine that if the login/signup details are offered in a thread on Spofi that some of the past participants will find themselves on the outside. Would a commish-to-be be interested in starting with those from last year's pool and filling up the spots starting with alumni? I'd imagine that we just might possible have enough interest to run two pools (of 16 teams or so, an AL-alumni league and NL-newbie league, of sorts). the second one could be filled with an open call for participants. just me pontificating. I don't wanna exclude anybody, but I've been in the Spofi league the last two years (others, years longer) and would hate to miss out just because the login info was posted in some thread and somebody, even a non-member, wanders by and joins and grabs a spot. I'd hate to lose other regulars to something like that too. and don't want to scare away new interested participants, don't wanna sound cranky like that, no siree.
posted by gspm at 08:34 PM on February 09, 2006
I understand what your saying gspm but I would like to play. I don't want to be stuck with the trolls. I think I have established myself in here and it is not my fault I did not find it till after the league last year. If we have enough people to have two leagues great but I would like to compete against experienced people and not just newbies.
posted by skydivemom at 09:33 PM on February 09, 2006
I think it'd definitely be better to put together a list of people who are in the league before distributing the name and password. I don't mind dropping out if we can take a look and see for sure that there's more interest than we have room for—but it's tough to say that with confidence when we're talking about it so abstractly.
posted by DrJohnEvans at 12:32 AM on February 10, 2006
I like gspm's AL/NL idea if we have too many players for one league. I don't mind being in the newb league if it means I get to play. I would like to compete against experienced people and not just newbies. I haven't played here before but i'm hardly a newbie. proof. Man did I bomb in '03.
posted by tron7 at 11:30 AM on February 10, 2006
I think the best way to do it would be to get a list of interested people (i.e. those who have posted here) and then email them the league name and password. Since you can see the emails on the profile page it might take a little bit but it would be a great way to keep out those who just happened to see the password.
posted by Ying Yang Mafia at 12:07 PM on February 10, 2006
Good idea YYM. Didn't mean to insinuate (spelling good grief) any one was a newbie at the fantasy league (I am though) but I was talking about one hit wonders who come into the sportsfilter yesterday and join the league today.
posted by skydivemom at 02:18 PM on February 10, 2006
I would be interested in playing if there is still a spot open. Obviously you can number me as a Spo-Fi newbie, but I've been playing in a 4x4 Roto league for twelve years and I've done a couple of Yahoo leagues to boot, so classify that as you will. I don't care a bit about format, but what I have noticed is that head-to-head leagues tend to keep people more interested in the second half than straight Roto -- teams that fall to the bottom tend to abandon their teams, or worse, make stupid moves to build an "All-Gonzalez" team, for example. In head-to-head, there is something of a clean slate every week, even if you are painfully behind in the standings. Just a thought.

There was alot of interest expressed in a head to head league. We can have both
posted by daddisamm at 11:21 AM on February 13, 2006
Are both leagues going to be first-come, first-served, or will the roto league be by invitation? And will participation in both leagues be frowned upon? (I am asking only for the record -- I definitely don't have time for two leagues, and I will probably do the head-to-head version if it is open).
posted by BullpenPro at 02:37 PM on February 13, 2006
I can only speak for the speak for the head to head league. This will be first come first serve. We have close to ten teams as I write this.
