I've made dumber comments...

Anyone wanna have a "who made the stupidest comments?" thread right here and quote them? Can we get voting?

This one sucks pretty bad as well.

Ufez: not a Catherine Bach fan? That whole Ringo Starr thing got ya down?

posted by NoMich at 04:43 PM on January 07, 2005

Oh crap, it's Barbara Bach that married Mr. Starkey. Crap.

posted by NoMich at 04:44 PM on January 07, 2005

Ufez's link to "women should be in the kitchen" is in the lead for me at the moment. We'd have a world beater if we could find some way to combine that misogyny with the 33 exclamation marks from the other post. In caps.

I just want to clarify...is it still OK to say Gary Bettman sucks?

posted by MeatSaber at 05:03 PM on January 07, 2005

You mean like "women should be in the kitchen...GO YANKEES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" and Gary Bettman will always indeed, in fact suck.

posted by chris2sy at 05:14 PM on January 07, 2005

I don't know, it's always so weird when comments are deleted from a Mefi thread. It's off-putting and makes the responses seem like those things I can pronounce but never spell (non sequ____). If it were me, I'd rather leave them and everybody pile on the poster until they kill themselves a la the guy from INXS on the phone with Bob Geldof. But again, that's just me.

Gary Bettman should stay in the kitchen where he belongs.

posted by Mr Bismarck at 05:29 PM on January 07, 2005

SF - I wish you had a pic to offer that features Bettman but is also like many of the other ones you find. you know, a 'Bettman getting kicked in the crotch' shot.

And so it continues. A disappointing amount of exclamation marks now though.

LROD?

posted by Ufez Jones at 07:52 PM on January 07, 2005

Hold up: LROD talked in caps, but like David Lynch in Twin Peaks. He might not have appreciated the whole one post theory, but this kid is making me miss him. Then again, the site's usually dead over the weekend. While I'm trying to enjoy C's v. Pistons, I have a feeling this might be more entertaining.

posted by rcade at 08:47 PM on January 07, 2005

Yeah, it's wildcard weekend and the most exciting thing happening in sports this weekend is the Kandahar downhill in Chamonix. If you can't be on a hillside in France with a bunch of drunk-outta-their-mind Euros singing the looly-looly song and ringing cowbells, the next best thing is to have the Internet equivalent bellowing MY VOICE WILL BE HEARD LIKE IT OR NOT. And you don't even get puke on your shoes.

posted by lil_brown_bat at 08:53 PM on January 07, 2005

And you don't even get puke on your shoes. Is that a challenge?

posted by Ufez Jones at 09:02 PM on January 07, 2005

I think we've been pretty lucky, to be honest, because with the open sign up policy I keep expecting to click in one day and see some swarm of high school kids or otherwise immature individuals essentially take over. Which would suck so people like MARCD and kingdavid remind me how good we have it.

posted by billsaysthis at 11:00 PM on January 07, 2005

You gotta admit, though, that piece about the pantless Yankees fans was priceless.

Everything happens in threes. Our January 7 CAPS invasion... MARCD, KingDavid, and this guy? Has King David been "stopped" yet? It was funny for a while (especially yerfatma messing with him), but now, not so much.

posted by jerseygirl at 09:04 AM on January 08, 2005

MARCD, KingDavid, and this guy? He's got to rack up a few more qualifying points, which may not happen today if Mom gave him a ride to the mall.

posted by lil_brown_bat at 09:44 AM on January 08, 2005

Just a thought: Is it possible that one of the regulars on SpoFi created a second account and uses that one as some sort of "therapy", by saying things that would normally sully their (semi-)good name on SpoFi? Nyet. I will wear these trolls out like old shoes with no socks. I'm all for ripping the ignorant a new one with logic, but when they reach the level of the multiple-exclamation-point responses, you just KNOW logic isn't going to work any more.

posted by squealy at 10:38 AM on January 08, 2005

i think i was doing pretty good. i got both MARCD and kingdavid to hate me. That means I have received more sass from these two geniuses in one day than I have here in the preceding year and a half. Not a good sign but I suppose I brought it upon myself by not ignoring them.

It's an open community. This happens from time to time - typically they get bored when no one talks to them, and move on. Sadly, we don't have ownership of our medium. Plus, he's just playing the role. Pantless Yankee fans and constant mispelling? Don't be had.

posted by WeedyMcSmokey at 10:55 AM on January 08, 2005

While we are talking baseball (I think) do any of you think Derek Lowe will do well in LA? bugmenot if you need it.

posted by jasonspaceman at 11:35 AM on January 08, 2005

Pantless Yankee fans and constant mispelling? Don't be had. I too, found it suspicious enough to consider it deliberate when three new wise men show up, saying things like "Bosten" and "John Karry." The 'women should stay in the kitchen' skit just underlined that this was a, (very weak), attempt to provoke. That's the problem with 21st century trolls though. No art in their craft.

posted by Mr Bismarck at 12:11 PM on January 08, 2005

He responded to his banning by creating several new accounts. That's one of the problems with banning people -- it just inspires them to be more of a pain in the ass.

posted by rcade at 12:20 PM on January 08, 2005

it was the same guy? i've been had! *shakes fist at monitor*

posted by gspm at 12:41 PM on January 08, 2005

Seems like Chavez Ravine and Lowe would be a good match. If he keeps the ball on the ground he should do well with LA's infield (at least the middle of it-- I don't know about the corners). He responded to his banning by creating several new accounts. Are you capturing IPs? You could disallow logins to any account from a banned IP. Except that leads to the AOL/ large ISP issue. Plus a troll from AOL (perish the thought) wouldn't be stopped by it. So never mind.

posted by yerfatma at 12:53 PM on January 08, 2005

Banning all of AOL? I'm not seeing the problem yet...

I think that we've been very lucky up to now, considering that most sports message boards are full of bile and the kind of ardent supporter who has nothing constructive to say except 'Broncos suck!' or 'The Baggies are going down! hahahahah!' (they do, and they are going down, but that's beside the point). I think a lot of the atmosphere stems from mefi, which when sporstfilter was created mefi was a forum populated by the intelligent and witty.
