Early Predictions for the Upcoming 2009-2010 NHL Season!

MeatSaber Thats what I'm talking about. Hold on I'm wiping the Coke off my keyboard. As far as the season is concerned, I'm hoping St. Louis continues where they left off last regular season. BoKnows

I had a difficult time placing St Louis where I did in the Division. Truthfully it's a toss up between the Blues and Jackets in that spot. I'm having a difficult time thinking Chris Mason is the guy in the pipes that's going to advance this squad. I've seen plenty of him in the central and if I hear about his potential 1 more time I'll .... well Ty Conklin. Big questions at goalie as far as I can tell but I've heard many a Blues fan thinking Mason can stand on his head again all season.

The Blueline is potent with Eric Johnson returning and the progress made by Alex Pietrangelo. Stir in Carlo Colaiacovo and Roman Polak add a dash of Barret Jackman you get a power Blueline (even more so if Eric Brewer can return to form and get on the ice). Unfortunately for the Blues defense isn't played in a vacuum and when your front line guys Andy McDonald, Brad Boyes and David Backes go -36 like they did last season it's a potential playoff killer. I'd also be surprised if Patrik Berglund, and Dave Perron can repeat what they did last year. Lots of upside for this squad and lots of question marks as well.

OK Howard_T your on but bring your A game because these are some really serious Fantasy Hockey Players. We play for keeps, winner take all. It was really a great league for several years I'd be thrilled to play a Puckathon once more having Championed the last season we played. Hopefully we can get all the former Champions back and everyone else that made this one of the most challenging leagues I've ever played in. Here's the hard part. I'd have a very difficult time commishing the league as Defending Champion. I'm going to set it up but I'm hoping someone can take over the Commish job. (Please anyone?) Here's the details, I'll also follow this up with a new Locker Room Post. Draft Day Saturday Sept. 26th 10AM EST! I'd prefer Friday Night the 25th at 6:30 PM EST. Let me know...

Same rules as last but like always we'll have rule discussions in the Locker Room thread. Straight Up Rotisserie Scoring, no gimmicks. Do your home work because I am.

Winner gets to Fly the Spofi Puckathon Banner for 2009!

We've room for 20 players so I'm expecting the likes of Grum, Weedy, The Good DrJE, Goddam, Bullpenpro, Skater umm Mr Frisby, NoMich, Qbert, spetzengle, willthrill, LeRoy, Fraze, Chico and anyone else who's ever played in this league to come out of the woodwork and all you other blokes to grab a squad as well because this is gonna be intense a No Holds Barred, play to dominate sort of adventure. Big shout out to Puckathon V!

Early Predictions for the Upcoming 2009-2010 NHL Season!

Doesn't seem to be a lot of interest in the up coming NHL Season around here. Oh well, I tried. Seems we probably won't be reviving the Puckathon this year.

Howard_T The Kessel epic in Boston seems to have gained some substance today for a trade to Toronto as the BlackHawks and Maple Leafs swap draft picks. Toronto reacquires a 2nd round 2010 pick for a 2nd and 3rd in 2011. They'll need that 2010 pick for a trade with Boston for young Mr. Kessel.

Early Predictions for the Upcoming 2009-2010 NHL Season!

There are a number of question marks with Boston going into this season, particularly on defense.Howard_T Chicago Blackhawks to win it all? Please explain.billsaysthis

Boston acquisition of Derek Morris more than makes up any defensive loss from the departures of Aaron Ward and Steve Montador. Morris also takes some of the pressure off Zdeno Chara to push the puck harder up ice this will allow him to sharpen his already dominating defensive presence in the other 2 zones. Having Ference and Hunwick back just adds some Blueline Depth. Anyone still questioning Tim Thomas just need to look at his 2008 performance.

Out West certainly San Jose is a heavy favorite to go to the finals but they've yet to advance past the quarter finals until they've done so I'll continue to pick against them. Chicago's acquistion of Hossa makes their front line (Hossa, Toews and Kane) best in conference hands down (maybe even best in league) it's not as if they didn't get to the conference finals in 2008.

I'm also of the opinion the move to add John Madden will be the most highly regarded off season move any team has made this summer, even ahead of Philly's addition of Chris Pronger, Centermen John Madden is widely acknowledged as one of the best defenders in the league, mostly neutralizing the loss of Havlat by way of a drastically improved defensive line. Kane in particular should advance considerably, his legal troubles behind him and three hard-fought playoff series under his belt. These aren't your Daddy's BlackHawks that deserved league wide disdain, they're a real threat to win the Cup. They've got arguably one of the deepest Bluelines in the league and can hurt you offensively with three potent lines and from anywhere on the ice at any time. Besides they've got a Bowman behind the scenes.

Detroit is completely distracted with 10 potential players suiting up for the Olympics as well as Head Coach Babcock along with GM Kenny Holland and Steve Yzerman. They're not going to replace the scoring lost when Mikael Samuelsson, Jiri Hudler and Marian Hossa all start the season elsewhere. Todd Bertuzzi and Jason Williams certainly won't. When you win by controlling the puck and keeping games close losing that offensive is really gonna hurt. I was going to put them 2nd in the Central but until they've been dethroned I'll keep them there, just remember the last time they had 10 players in the Olympics (Turin Italy) they were an early out in the playoffs at the hands of the Edmonton Oilers. All The Best Paul

Early Predictions for the Upcoming 2009-2010 NHL Season!

Training Camps are opening soon and the annual Red Wings Rookies and Prospects Tournament is underway in Travis City Michigan. The 09/10 NHL Season is almost upon us! What follows are my predictions for the 29/30 Team NHL. (Who knows about the Coyotes fate?)

Atlantic Division:
1. New Jersey Devils
2. Philadelphia Flyers
3. New York Rangers
4. Pittsburgh Penguins
5. New York Islanders

NorthEast Division:
1. Boston Bruins
2. Buffalo Sabres
3. Ottawa Senators
4. Montreal Canadians
5. Toronto Maple Leafs

SouthEast Division
1. Washington Capitals
2. Carolina Hurricanes
3. Florida Panthers
4. Atlanta Thrashers
5. Tampa Bay Lighting

NHL Western Conference

Central Division
1. Detroit Red Wings
2. Chicago BlackHawks
3. St Louis Blues
4. Columbus Blue Jackets
5. Nashville Predators

NorthWest Division
1. Vancover Canucks
2. Minnesota Wild
3. Calgary Flames
4. Edmonton Oilers
5. Colorado Avalanche

Pacific Division
1. San Jose Sharks
2. Dallas Stars
3. Anaheim Ducks
4. Los Angeles Kings
5. Phoenix/Hamliton Coyotes

Eastern Conference Champions
Washington Capitals

Western Conference Champions
Chicago BlackHawks

Stanley Cup Champions
Chicago BlackHawks

I can finally have a little hope about the Chicago BlackHawks. Isn't that what early predictions are all about! Actually I think the Best Team in Hockey going into the season is the Boston Squad but they always find a way to blow it just like those Squads they put out in San Jose. Other than the Bruins not coming out of the East last year my biggest disappointment in 2008 was the complete collapse of the Montreal Canadians.

Are you ready for some hockey?

NoMich, I feel your pain sort of. My squad has only 1 playoff appearance in the last 10 years and we haven't won a SC since 1961. I guess its probably still better than the pain of being a Leafs fan! OK Here's my picks for 40 pts. Habs in 6 Kovalev, Sturm Sens in 7 Heatley, Malkin Caps in 6 Ovechkin, Prospal Rangers in 7 Jagr, Parise Detroit in 5 Zetterburg, Radulov Sharks in 6 Michalek, Iginla Aves in 7 Stasny, Gaboric Ducks in 5 Getzlef, Richards Thanks NoMich and Hater. This thread will work just fine.

Presented without comment,

but there's something about what's basically an AP game story that seems . . . well, why require a link at all if you just want discussion? It's not "basically an AP story" The page is a comprehensive encapsulation of a special moment in time. It includes: a well written 1100 word piece with 12 links to profiles of the players involved, 2 links to Team Profiles of the Teams involved, a link to the video highlight of Modano's Special Goal, a video link to highlights of the winning goal tender, a video of complete game highlights, 8 links to official NHL Charts of Game Summary, Box Score, Play by Play Breakdown, Event Summary, Faceoffs, Comprehensive TOI shift by shift of every player that stepped on the ice, a comprehensive shot chart and a graphic chart of the Game Penalties. I find your characterization of this FPP as "basically an AP game story" to be completely disingenuous and misleading. I posted the most comprehensive source material I could find to tell the story of Modano's Special Accomplishment. If you found something better please share it.

The Cubs are the most pathetic team in sports history. There is no such thing as a lovable loser and '07 will turn out the way it always has in utter dissapointment. Wrigley should be torn down, replaced by a high rise and the ChiSox made the only team in Chicago. Make those north side haters go to the south side to watch baseball where they would tremble in fear of the 'hood. We'll see how many trendy psuedo-celebs and has-beens show up to watch baseball then. The Cubs are a disgrace to MLB. HA! Comment icon posted by Brahdakine at 1:16 PM CDT on October 4 I must admit I felt a twinge of anger over this comment and I post it just to suggest that around here hatred isn't as Yankee Centric as Crafty seems to think. I even get "Cubbie Hatred" comments from members here who otherwise are normally civil and well spoken. Perhaps it is the Century of Futility that has thickened my skin. While this particular post was obviously troll induced my reaction to it was suffered silently. I certainly can empathize with the feeling of disappointment and embarrassment and the last thing I wanted to see was a FPP outlining their considerable short-comings. That doesn't mean it shouldn't be discussed only that the level of discussion can quickly turn rather ugly. I try to get over it and usually succeed. Forgive and Forget! Crafty, yea I think your being overly sensitive then again I don't have 26 Championships or even 6 for that matter to ease my suffering. You have contributed significantly and I'm sorry to see you go. Mayhaps you'll reconsider and do what I do, stick around for the Hockey!

so many of you picked the Ducks to win our division. I can't speak for everyone but adding Brad Norton and Alexei Semenov to add some "veteran" presence and depth on the Blueline along with Rivet just doesn't get it done. Roenik has been a none factor for a few years now. So I can't see them winning the Division. Especially if Nabokov falters with the increased work load there's nothing behind him. Hey, nobody said they wouldn't be in the playoffs. That's a given and should please you. As a fan the question you should be asking is can they crank it up a couple levels in the playoffs because they certainly didn't against the Wings last season. I watched every game in that round and if thats what they got they can't win the Pacific Division. The toughest in the league.

I've seen some really impressive young NHL Prospect. The Tournament ends Tuesday with the Championship Game. I've had an opportunity to talk lots of really impressive young men and here's a couple videos I put together for you guys. Chad Denny and Lauri Korpikoski of Finland. I gotta say after watching Chad Denny play 2 games I totally disagree with the rating he recieved in the link I posted about him. He really delieved some amazing jarring hits and scored to PP Goals from the Point with a Pronger like slap shot. Anyway Enjoy

I'm leaving for the Red Wings sponsored Rookie and Prospects Tournament early Friday AM. I was going to head up tomorrow but I was given a last minute assignment by a client this afternoon. Rats, but he pays promptly. There's 8 teams sending squads, have a look at the players the Rangers are sending and add 7 addition NHL Teams and you can see why I'm in a hurry for the weekend to start. My credentials were just approved and I'm looking forward to putting together some columns for you guys. If you have some suggestions for kewl questions to ask of some of these players, not just your typical Q & A stuff, I sure could use some help. I'll try to post some comments everyday if I can get my laptop working in time. Now how about some NHL Trivia. Which team had the most 18 Goal+ scorers in the 05-06 season? Bonus points if you can name the last team to match or exceed that total....

Now gang, I'm with succa on this one. Sens bring the Cup Home. Losing Havlat, Chara, Arnason, Smolinski, Hasek, Pothier and Morrison isn't taking a step back when you add Allison, Corvo, Gerber, McAmmond, Preissing. Consider it this way, they've defiantly improved the Goalie situation and with the departure of Havlat the door is open for RW Patrick Eaves to shine and shine he will remember he had 20 goals and 9 asst. in 58 games in limited ice time. Look for a huge jump in his pts. this season. Since the new Senators came into existence in 92-93 they had never had a 100 pt scorer (Yashin back in 98-99 was the closet with only 94 pts. 44g-50a) last year they had 2 Heatley and Alfredsson with 103 a piece. The special teams play is incredible PK 84.7% (4th in league) PP 20.8% (4th in league) but consider this, they could get you either way on Special Teams either SH or PP. They led the league in Shorthanded Goals last season with Vermette (6), Alfredsson (5) Schaefer (4) Fisher (4). Then Heatley and Alfredsson combined for 39 PPG. Even though Ray Emery (23-11-4, 2.82 GAA, .902 SV%) played more then adequate after the injury to Hasek they didn't feel he is capable of a #1 spot and went and signed Gerber off the UFA Market. Even though Gerber played inconsistently in the playoffs for Carolina last season (he did have the flu) don't forget he went 38-14-6, 2.78 GAA, .906 SV%. Gerber's got something to prove and the Sens are the team to prove it with. Wade Redden (10-40-50) was the MVP on the Backend for the Senators, with the new rules, Redden was able to open up his game and make a better 1st pass without the redline coming into effect and was amply rewarded a 3 year contract that keeps him in the Capital City. He's a monster and don't forget he lead the league with a +35. (Tied) He's only gonna improve upon that with Chara gone or if Phillips gets his head screwed on straight this year and uses the new rules to his advantage the Sens look powerful in all aspects of the Game! Speeza, Heatly, Alfredsson are a Goalies worst nightmare! Senators wreck havoc in the playoffs and the Cup goes North of the Border. I'll look at a few other possibilities and get back to you guys but the Sens look like they should be heavily favored.

weedy: I figured you were going down that road and I hope it works that way. Spezza'a a fantastic player no doubt but the extra games could just as easily drop his per game Asst. totals as not, where as Heatley is a proven commodity for a full 82 games. I like his chances at the Art Ross this year over Speeeza for some of the same reasons you like Speeza's but it's probably going to Jagr or Thorton, all things being equal.

I hear you Hater and Skater, In making my picks my concerns for the Rangers ability to win the division has more to do with Straka and Rozsival. I'll explain shortly. First lets look at the Jagr and Shanahan situation. Do you play them together? Really the question should be do you play Shanahan with Straka and Jagr? Straka had a renaissance year in 05/06 with 76 pts. in 82 Games many of which were by riding Jagr's coat-tails. Straka is a good bet to repeat these totals only if he stays healthy and gets his time with Jagr. Remember he only averaged 42 games in his previous 3 years with Pittsburgh and Los Angeles. If you think he can stay healthy there's no way you don't play him with Jagr and Shanahan isn't a LW/C like Straka. I guess the obvious answer becomes Shanahan plays without Jagr most of the time. I make this a positive for the Rangers as they can balance their scoring and relieve some of the pressure on Jagr. I have some concern of the loss of the roll players especially Ruchinsky his 26 PP pts in 52 Games will be difficult to replace but the Rangers have adequate bench depth and can add some young talent in their system (Artem Anisimov, Ryan Hillier, Eric Hunter and David Kveton) if needed. This front office also added Cullen and Hall this off season wasn't just about losing some roll players. Rozsival was certainly a surprise last year for the Rangers and the League for that matter, after he tied for the league lead in +/- at +35 with Redden. It should come as no surprise that I don't put him in the same level of player as Redden. A career high of 30 pts. last season but only a meager 11 pts. on the power play. Also consider he has only averaged 54 games the last previous 3 full seasons and some major injuries and a possible let down seems to be a high possibility. All this said I still believe the Rangers are the best team in this Division and the addition of Shanahan and the already spectaculer Lundqvist's probable improvement (if that's possible) with a year under his belt bodes well for a 1st place Blue Shirt finish. Skater I don't see the Islanders as nothing but mostly pathetic. The 12th place finish last year and the chaos created by inept ownership, well did they even have an offensive team MVP last year considering they had no player even reach the 70 pt plateau. I guess one could pick between Miroslav Satan and Alexi Yashin but they both had 66 pts. and an identical amount of shots. (253). Looking at their +/- Satan (-8) Yashin (-14) and both lack any PP Goals worth mentioning but I will anyway. Satan 17 Yashin 10. I guess Satans $4.25 million vs Yashins $7.6 million dollar salary speaks volumes about the ineptitude of this entire organization. To be considered a dark horse is a stretch in my opinion and they would have to see Hunter come out of his sophomore slump from last year scoring wise but he is certainly one of the most physical players in the NHL and his 230 hits was second only to Dallas' Brendan Marrow's (234). They do have some intriguing talent however this isn't an organization capable of maximizing what they have. I wont even mention the slowing development of DiPietro between the pipes. Ok I will. Last year seemed like a small set backfor him as he posted a 30-24-5 record with a 3.02 GAA, a .900 SV% and 1 shutout as opposed to his rookie season of 23-18-5, a 2.36 GAA, a .911 SV% and 5 shutouts. Better hope he stays healthy however with Dubielewicz as his back up. He only played in 7 games at the NHL Level. 2-3-0 with a 2.90 GAA and .897 SV%. I could go on but its the Islanders why bother. They finish last again.

Is it to early to make Predictions for the upcoming 2006-07 NHL Season?

Crosby is going to be top three in points. OK, but who finishes 2nd and 1st?

What! Keenan steps down as Panthers GM. Perhaps the powers that be weren't so thrilled about losing Luongo. Might have to move the Panthers lower in the order. Jacques Martin as GM and Head Coach. Oh boy this can't be good if your a Panther's Fan. I'm not but maybe they'll trade Okinen to Chicago! Hey I can dream can't I?

7. Leafs 7. Black Hawks "I sense an extreme amount of optimism flooding out from your comment skydivedad." I thought someone here at LeafsFilter would call me out for the Toronto Pick before the BHawk pick. I have strong reasons for both making the playoffs. Toronto truely is a case of addition thru subtraction. They got rid of Allison, Lindros, Domi and Wilm from last years roster between these guys they had just 34 Goals certainly one can expect the newcomers to easily exceed that number and vastly improve team chemistry. The Leafs had 9 15 goal scorers last season. The Canes had 8 as did the oilers if you count Samsonov, the powerhouse Sens had 10 two of which are no longer with the team. The D scoring from Kubina, White and Colaiacovo makes a difference as will just a small improvement in save % from last years .897 and the Leafs are at the Big Dance. Chicago will make the playoffs behind the increased offensive prowess the presence of Havlat and Handzus bring with them but mostly the BHawks make the Dance because of the Play of a healthy Khabibulin in goal. Increased team speed and superior goal tending brings Chicago a playoff birth!

We're Moving

In my IE, version (6.0.2900.2180 sp2), the search button gets set to a seperate line forcing the Orange Banner to cut off the date. It does this occassionally on the front page and always on the columns page. Hope this helps.
