people will be lumping him in with all the other horrible picks the Cards have made over the last 80 years or so... I think Don was referring to illustrious 1st rounders such as Steve Pisarkiewicz, Steve Little, Clyde Duncan and Kelly Stouffer. I could go on...these are just a few of the worst. I suffered through Bidwell & George Boone's ineptness every year until Arizona was kind enough to take them away.

I was also wondering about the difference in Conte's statements. Was he lying in the 60 Minutes interview? Come on. Even by that interview anyone who cared knew Conte was a chameleon- changing his story depending on who he was talking to at the time. My point exactly. So this time we should believe he's really telling the truth.

Until the allegations in this book are actually proven, they don't have any more credibilty than Jose Canseco's. Anybody can write a book, and many do, usually with the intent of making some money. The more spectacular the allegations, the more people buy the book. Not to say that this might not all prove to be true, but until it is, its just somebody else's storyline. Amateur- I was also wondering about the difference in Conte's statements. Was he lying in the 60 Minutes interview? Now my real dilemma- do I try to trade BB from my fantasy team while he still has some value, or stick with him, hoping this will all blow over and he gets me the 30 or so HR's I was hoping for when I got him in the 6th round?

I got the chance to watch Hansbrough play in high school last year as he single-handedly carried his team (Poplar Bluff) to the Missouri State H.S. Championship for the second year in a row. He was truly a man among boys at that level. He's a very talented player, but I hope he stays in college another year or two before jumping to the pros.

The "one-out setup man" drives me crazy. Back & forth with the righty-righty/lefty-lefty matchups ad nauseum from the 6th to 8th innings. Tony LaRussa is the king of this "strategy". Doesn't matter how well a guy is pitching, a guy can strike out the 1st 2 batters he faces and he'll be yanked for a "better matchup".

Jackie Smith is doing fine these days. You would be hard-pressed to find an ex-athlete with more class & personality. He's still very involved in the St. Louis community. As much as the dropped pass must have pained him, he can take comfort in the fact that he's one of the very few ex-Cardinal players that ever set foot on a Super Bowl playing field.

Its a sad time to be a hockey fan in St. Louis. In a couple of weeks there won't be much left for the Laurie's to sell- just a few "has-beens" and "never-weres". Much as I hate it though, might as well get something for guys like Weight, because he's an unrestricted FA after the season and we certainly couldn't re-sign him. Pretty much the only way the Blues win a game form here on out is a shutout by Sanford(even that's no sure thing!)

I really like the Haslett move. The turnovers & special teams aren't his responsiblity any more. All he has to do is put together a good defense, which he has shown he can do. I'm a little more concerned about the Olson hire. I know a lot of people are high on this guy, but the Lions quarterbacks and offense haven't exactly been the envy of the league!

Mcstan- we did a good job of looking the other way when Big Mac was here (count me as one of them). And Lawton admitting to a single mistake doesn't exactly make him a roid freak. The Ponson thing surprised me too- we're gonna have to be careful with him AND Leonard Little driving around town.

What about New York, Philly & NJ- aren't they a lot closer to each other than 124 miles (or does this just apply to new franchises?). Kansas City & St. Louis are 240 miles apart, by the way. The way the Blues are playing right now, there isn't much of a fan base to dilute. I'm sure the Lauries would love to sell the Blues to a group of KC investors, but their long-term lease with the Savvis Center won't permit that to happen. Also KC has had an NHL franchise in the past- The KC Scouts (1974-1976) who later became the Colorado Rockies.

I would venture a guess that the percentage of whites in the NBA is far less than the percentage of whites in the general population. Is this indicative of discrimination by the NBA against whites? Does it mean that white kids have lost interest in basketball? Or is maybe just more of a cultural thing? Kids choose to play what they are exposed to growing up. I can't buy the "no room in the inner city" argument as most Latin American kids seem to play baseball (or soccer) and many come from the same inner city conditions.

As LaRussa said after the game, everyone says the Cards looked flat, but its hard to look anything BUT flat when the opposing pitchers come out and dominate the way Houston did this series. Despite the incompetant umpiring, bonehead plays by Mulder and all the other excuses, the fact is that excellent pitching is what wins postseason games. Hats off to the Astros from this Cardinals fan.

My thought is that Checketts is also viewing the NBA angle. With his many NBA connections thru the Knicks & the Jazz, he may be able to do what the Lauries could not in St. Louis. Also, the St. Louis Post Dispatch is reporting today that the sale of the Blues is by no means complete. Checketts has been given exclusive bargaining rights for the next 30 days, during which time they will try to finalize the purchase price and other details.

When franchises go bad.
The Blues???? One terrible year doesn't make them a bad franchise. Checketts, Davidson and new coach Andy Murray have done an admirable job of rebuilding the franchise after former owner Laurie's dismantling job last year. Also, how could the Arizona Cardinals fail to make this list? Here is a franchise that has never been good- not in Chicago, not in St. Louis, not in Arizona. Bill Bidwill HAS to be the worst owner in all of pro sports.
