IRS will be the ones who drop the hammer on the Gretzky's. All gambling wins are suppose to be reported as other income on the front of the tax return and an equal amount of losses can be claimed as an itemized deduction. The gross number that should have been reported may be very large. The $500k number being thrown around is only the net. If substantial the IRS has a potential tax fraud/evasion case. Maybe Janet can get Martha's old cell.

Brian Anderson of the White Sox will be next year's AL Rookie of the year. Has good power so meets the RBI spec but it will take a couple of years before he hits for .300+

Does anyone know if the water channel in right field (McCovey's Cove?) is considered part of the stadium? If so, do the kayakers need tickets? If its open to the public, I can only imagine watching the hand to hand combat when Baroid launches one to pass Ruth & Aaron. There will be 50,000 UFC type of characters tearing each other to pieces.

I hope the Seahawks do a successful trick FG play in the Super Bowl in memory of us fans who suffered (but laughed) through the Jim Zorn, Efren Herrera days. I guess I will finally publicly recognize that Holmgren is a better coach than Jack Patera.

I would hope these multi year contract holders would have an appreciation for their predecessors, but I haven't heard about a single current player supporting their lawsuit. It is a shame that the great game of baseball cannot take care of their own. They are not asking for much.

Somebody should make plastic doormats with the Lions Logo in the center with the words "Goodbye Matt" emblazoned under the logo. The fans could tell security they were seat cushions, 50,000 doormat/cushions could be simultaneously hurled at Millen's skybox.

I would have trouble voting for a starter who won 20 games once in his 22 year career. Granted he was on some lame teams. I would vote for Bruce Sutter before Bert. Sutter helped revolutionize the position with Fingers, Eckersley, etc. He was more than a one inning relief man but thoroughly dominated for 10 years. Also pioneered the use of the split fingered fastball which became a significant influence on the game. Bert's curveball revolutionized the development of geometric measurement software used to measure home run distance.

I have ignored Lee Corso every since his thrice weekly proclamations that Gino Toretta was more worthy to win the Heisman than Marshall Faulk. Herbstreit on the other hand has good insights and is always prepared no matter how obscure the team he's covering.

I was a season ticket holder in San Diego when Tom Werner & Crew invaded from LA. They traded 4 allstars in their first two years and all the fans felt they made no honest attempt to win. To determine Werner's credibility, one only needs to remember that Werner made his cash producing the Roseanne TV show. Who can forget his effort at creating synergy - having his star Rosie sing the national anthem. The Red Sox woes from Werner's ineptitude are just surfacing now.

I envision him someday on ESPN 16 doing commentary on billiard matches, dart tourneys and JUCO basketball games just like he did before he became the 10 second sound bite that we are forced to listen to for three hours. Amateur, I believe the large increase in 1991-1992 can be attributed to the fact Bert Blyleven did not pitch in 1991 and he did in 1992. He had more effect on HR stats than steroids.

Las Vegas has the strictest commission and the most safety precautions of any boxing jurisdiction. Maybe that isn't saying much however. Nobody has discussed that the person responsible for throwing in the towel was his trainer who also happens to be his father. I assume his father has been with him from day 1 and would be the best judge of his son's condition. I do not know his fathers qualifications but maybe they need better qualified trainers as well. It's impossible to prove if 1 punch, 1 fight or the 100,000+ career punches did the damage. I hope he recovers to live a normal life.

I remember TBS used to broadcast the AFL 20 years ago. Collingwood Ravens were on every week. A very exciting rough game back then. I have watched a few Adelaide matches the last few years but it seems pedestrian compared to the good ol head bustin days. Good Luck to your Swans. I'll watch if Kylie does the halftime show.

Nice work Grum. I think these payroll numbers might be the 40 man roster and also the disabled list may skew your minimum wage calc. I agree that the salaries need a common benchmark to be measured but how about using the teams Gross Revenues (if they could be obtained). Salaries as a percentage of the teams gross revenues may work as a benchmark. It would be an eye opener if fans could compare the percentage of sales to salaries expense. Maybe the Yankees take in 5 times the revenue Cleveland does. If true then their win cost would be comparable.

I agree roberts that the ERA is a good measure of pitching performance. That's what good about the Cy Young, many opinions and theories. I just wish they would publish who voted for whom to stop the sometimes bogus & biased vote outcomes. Other items to note - Carpenter also outdueled Clemons on 7/17, He has five shutouts, pitches about 1 more inning a game, if you threw out Carpenters 4/10 start the ERA's would be a lot closer. I wonder if anyone has ever won it with such a low win total and 8-9 wins less than the league leaders?

Carpenter should easily win the voting with Dontrell Willis far back in second. Carpenter has been dominating down the stretch which should carry far more weight than Clemens season long hard luck story.

Rocketman, Do you think anyone who has 90% of his net worth in an investment can make decisions impartially or that sometimes are adverse to the economic interests of himself or fellow partners who appointed him? Here's some issues he has championed: Cancelled 1994 Series without bargaining in good faith, tried to use scabs in 1995 spring training until fan revolt, tried to put spiderman logo on bases, impartial - kept office at Brewers ballpark until 1999 and only moved out when stadium renovated, said 25 of 30 teams lost money but refused to open their books for scruntiny, waffled on steroids issue until congress got him by the short hairs, lost a $300 mil collusion case to players, owners paid for it with expansion fees so it cost them nothing, two years later he was calling for contraction by eliminating two teams and one of those was the Twins which would have provided him an geographical economic benefit- also pie split 30 ways instead of 32, his shady dealings of Expos move caused former Montreal owners owners to sue MLB under the RICO act, sold his interest in Brewers in 2004 - a mere 12 years after he took job, tried to advertise on players uniforms, bullies city and states to build new ballparks on taxpayers back or will support moving team, allowed Marlins to sell all their players from World Championship team after fans voted to finance new ballpark. Same question Ronald Reagan kicked Carter's ass with- Is baseball better off today than it was in 1992 when he took over? I'm off to BALCO and pick something up to calm down

I agree with dusted's comments regarding MLB's frontman. MLB needs to upgrade it's image and should start by sending this repo man back to the car lot. Can you think of any commissioner candidate who would not be an upgrade from this clown? (excluding Steve Howe)

Timing of Wiretap Backs Gretzky
cybermac, I think you need to reread my post. I did not come close to inferring I had viewed their returns, nor did I say anything about the 2006 superbowl earnings, nor did I mention anything about which years tax return the income should be reported. I thought my post was very general using the words may or if and in no way was it an allegation. You have every right to disagree with my comment and that is what is great about this forum but please critique what I actually wrote. You shot at me was about as accurate as Dick Cheney's shot.
