Interesting. I really like the idea of sparking promotion/relegation in the US from the bottom up.

That's fantastic. I think it was Roger Clemens that thought his cabbie had dropped him off at a warehouse instead of Fenway Park on his first day with the Sox. Granted, Kenmore has improved a bit since then, but there are still areas around the park that similar to that shot in Cuba.

Also, even if they don't formally adopt the showing of cards (they won't), I hope broadcasters attach a little yellow card onto the player's name in any on-screen graphics, so we can keep track of who has been booked.

I think it is a good rule, but boy howdy, this is going to put a ton of scrutiny on every single personal foul call, as players will be (perceived or real) forced to play more cautiously after that first yellow card. Even if they don't end up ejected, fans will be furious that their player's hands were tied.

or if Dombrowski's press conference included the line, "We know he will suck for the last 4 years relative to his pay, we just don't care, we're so stinking rich."
I feel like that is just taken as read in all megacontracts these days, especially from the super-rich teams.

Excellent. Fascinating to see that it works out in the end, when it could have become mired somewhere below what is now Division I or even expired by being held by a team that disbanded its football program. I wonder what team has had the most chances at the Belt without ever winning it?

I have a question about the ruling on the final play of MNF. My brain tells me that recently (within the last 5-10 years) the out of bounds rule was changed such that the ball carrier has to go out of bounds while attempting to make forward progress in order for the clock to stop. If they just run (or roll, as last night) sideways to get out of bounds, the clock keeps rolling. That makes the call on that final play correct, but neither Steratore nor Blandino explained it that way after the fact. Many people on Twitter last night and a random answers.com post seem to agree with me (and make me think I'm not totally insane), but other than that, I can't find any evidence of that interpretation of the rule. Does this sound familiar to anyone else?

My understanding is that this sort of thing is like a spitball in baseball. Illegal if you get caught, but done often enough that it's not the sort of shocking scandal some seem to want to make it out to be. Aaron Rodgers said in an interview this week that he routinely asks his crew to overinflate the balls, for example.

Before the 2016 Games, wrestling's makeover will include a few tricks borrowed from the MMA world (perhaps no more singlets, the addition of music, lighting, visual effects) to make the sport more entertaining.
It seems silly, but I do think losing the singlet would be a big help. It really makes the sport look dated. Also visual effects? Like a green screen mat, and then you can make it look like they are wrestling on the surface of Mars or in an ancient amphitheater? Awesome.

That was intense. I agree with you about the non-call, but it's shocking Mexico didn't get the benefit of the doubt on that one at home. I was not too worried about the lack of offense. It seemed clear that they were going with a very conservative game plan, largely eschewing counter-attacks to prevent getting caught out by a quick counter-counter-attack, especially with the concerns about the fullbacks going into the match. The US did have some sustained periods of good possession on the Mexican side of the field, especially in the second half.

Maybe the IOC didn't like any of the other sports applying for bids ("baseball and softball, karate, squash, roller sports, sport climbing, wakeboarding and wushu") so they figured they dump a sure thing into that pool? I guess I need to stop assuming the decisions of international sports governing bodies are going to make any kind of sense.

That way it seems like they just couldn't get the schedule to work out, not that he sucks. If he knew they'd only start him against a contender, he'd say "I don't want to ruin anyone's season, so I only want to pitch when it won't affect the pennant race." Weaselly bastard.
